Kaya is Japanese yew. Wood Database says that we have a pacific yew over here but it appears to be a little darker than its neighbor in Japan. It’s a very dense softwood.

Why do you have to use 3 foot thick chunk of timber ? waste of good lumber for the sake of tradition ? this is now a scarce resource for a board game ?
This is listed $3500usd online. A used one that looks to be 20+ years old similar with the pyramid center is $275 on Ebay. How can this business sell enough of these to pay the bills? Does Japan not charge them lots of taxes or insurances and is the cost of living lower than we think?
Many products are sold in Asia, where demand is high. We have not only high-priced items, but also low-priced items. You can earn a living by doing work such as repairing Go and Shogi boards.
Please explain why so much wood should be wasted on a game board? I respect the work of the craftsman, but this piece of wood could make four (if not more) thin game boards and they would be no worse (or maybe even better, because then they could be taken with you).

It is a tree called Kaya. The scientific name is Torreya nucifera.

スマホで将棋もできるし、このデカい将棋盤を持ち歩くのは不可能だし、どうしても廃れていくのは宿命付けられた運命なのかもしれない。

最近は、街角で囲碁将棋をやる人が減りましたね。6寸盤を見る機会も減り、ネットでの対局に変わってきたような気がします。
