  • In 2016, Canada exported more than $800 million worth of snow crab around the world. And the largest share of that snow crab passed through tiny Bay de Verde, N.L., home to the Quinlan Bros. processing plant.
    "The Newfoundland snow crab fishery, it's a wild harvest fishery," says Robin Quinlan, the company's vice president. He attributes the crab's quality and international demand to the fact that "it's a completely naturally occurring fishery."

      @@whoopigoldberg9956 hmm idk about us but not sure i ever seen false label of origin on sea food here in canada specially when most of it says its from china lol, no im sure the guy got his crab from newfoundland but he might get the one that comes from alaskan fishing instead ,wonder if one is more expensive than the other or there is a reason he prefers that one

    If that's true then why the hell is crab so bloody expensive here in the province? If we are indeed the biggest distributer of snow crab you would think that we would get a discount on them.

    • @checkle1
      @checkle1 Рік тому

      Unfortunately that's not how that works. Same with any other high value fishery. The price point is set, if the local markets don't pay that price, the processors will find someone farther away who will buy it at that price. Your best bet is always to buy directly from the plant, make a friend who fishes, or fish recreationally yourself. It would be neat if fishers and processors were willing to drop the price for a small part of the quota specifically for the area, but fat chance lol...

      @ivenstorm Рік тому +1

      @@checkle1 oh I'm well aware. The plant sells for far cheaper than in stores. The issue is the distance. The plant could easily be a good 5 hours away, if not more.
      I can get someone to take me out cod fishing during the season and walk away with a good 10-12 fish, assuming I can catch them. It's just the cost of boarding the boat.
