I was kicked out of my youth group for ‘asking too many of the wrong questions’ as a teen. It took understanding the Buddha to heal from that. But in the end, it was Ifá that called me and marked me for my best destiny. 🙏🏾 Ashé
I’m so thankful to have found this video, grew up Pentecost too but my mama Cuban and Santeria is strong in our blood. Accepting being hija de las dos aguas has lifted my darkness, I’m thankful for this journey 💛🎉
I grew up pentacostal and in the Black Church and really appreciated my spiritual growth and experiences there. My abuela wa s apopular Puerto Rican Espiritista in her town, owned a botanica and practice other things I wasn't able to deciphere at a young age. The church actually helped with my migration to lukumi because of the blatant lack of education and disinformation about religion (not to mention internalized racism). The preacher would thank God for bringing us out of Africa from demonic religions, etc, etc, etc. Then he would nod at us young musicians and we would hit specific organ rhythms, specific drum and guitar patterns, etc. Then folks would become possessed and start prophesying... Seeing that work, having my own spiritual experiences and knowing the disinformation involved just helped nudge me towards my grandmothers world (althought he never had a chance to discuss it). When I told my pentacostal mother, she shrugged and said, I knew you were like your grandmother anyway.
I grew up in the christian church also but i did have some family memebers who practiced hoodoo or “roots” and had to hide it but growing up i can remember seeing certain things done when ur sick or somethin and didnt have to go to a dr. Once i initiated into IFA i felt like this is where i belong and it answered so many questions ive had growing up. Proud daughter of Yemoja🧜🏾♀️
Growing up Pentecostal, there is some things that is somewhat similar to Santería, even though in pentecostal it's tabooed to compare the symmetry. At the age of 24, I felt incomplete and decided to go into Santería, and it to this day, from 18 years ago, changed my life for the best. Again these interviews is a blessing, and I do share them with others. Thank you
Love your podcast. For a very long time since childhood. I had a strong feeling something was calling me and even literally hearing my name being called in complete silence by myself. I moved from Christianity to Islam to Sufism and so on. Until I found IFA and I’ve been home ever since! Ase
I loved this podcast and rewatch it many times. I am currently playing it for my two eldest sons who are interested in getting to know the religion. They are half Puerto Rican, my other two youngest are half Mexican. I feel they each have their own paths that will enlighten their spiritual growth. Weve been going thru many battles lately. I keep praying, like Baba Joseph said, "Am I doing the right thing?" Heavy on my heart. My mother in law is devoutly Christian and every single other thing in this world is "evil" to her. Im hoping I never need to defend my beliefs because it would be so painful to argue with a brick wall. My husband is not really religious althiugh he was raised christian. He has expressed his concerns and how he doesnt want me to continue with this religion. But I can not pull away from this 😔
I grew up jehovas wittness and come from a family who doesnt even know what they believe in. I wish i could get my family to understand the beauty of this religion but all people ever think about is the animal sacrifice and how its “demonic” so sad.
How refreshing to read your comment. I too was raised in JW and was baptized at 16. Fast forward at 32, I decided to leave JW… I became a born again Christian and practiced for the next 15 years. I recently was introduced to Ifá, by a friend. I feel it’s no coincidence to find your comment on here. I’m really new at learning Ifá, but so far all I can say as you know, this has definitely been an breathe of fresh air, an eye opener and something we are taught not to look into as JW. So far i haven’t found any reason not to look further into this practice. To me Ifá is “Love” !!! Joseph does a great job at explaining this. This interview has by far resonated with me the most. If you are willing , I’m open to getting connected with you so that we can share our Ex JW experience. Let me know how we can connect. Blessings
I used to study the book of Samuel and kings in the old testament a lot. Something I always found interesting is that Saul was Jewish yet regularly got readings. Even to the point he was forbidden to get readings anymore. The moment he did the "witch" told him how he will get her in trouble cause he was forbidden according to what she read.

I learned that in history many taino/arawak people are still here… there are many of us… its just through coloinization many of us indigenious people were forced to take on these other labels like hispanic and indian. The etymology of the word indian means one without god, so its clear that we were forced to change who we were in the new world with a new identity( a label)… but we are still genetically taino and arawak indigenous people. NOT ALL tainos/arawak were killed during history, many of us just took on a different identity. NOW we rise! One Love!

With the understanding that syncretism was used to preserve the faith of IFA during colonization, are you of the mindset that practitioners in this age should openly practice?
Before african and european came to the new world continent, there were millions of tribal nations in the caribbean alone. In secluded remote areas of particular island colonies, there are tribal people, mixed and non mixed since the invasion of 1492. Of course a large percentage have the strongest of european genes, with native tribal genetics. Also other european descent genetics and then whatever percentage of african for a distinctive percentage.
