I met Mark Millar about a year and a half ago and I was talking to him about red son saying it's my favourite superman story and my favourite work that he has written. he told me he originally had written it when he was in his mid teens.

not necessarily. it could be that there is something about the world that causes it to unfold in an analogous way in every iteration. that would explain how all the different DC universes are so similar, and also why you get things like Thomas Wayne batman and Martha Wayne joker. the world needed a new [insert character here] so the world made a new [insert character here]. she might not be genetically similar to the old one, like old Flash and new Flash, but she would be filling the same niche cosmologicaly speaking.

At the end, we're basically being told: "Hey, that alien you thought was from Krypton?... Nope, future earth."
If you were to go Red Son > Post-Terrans > Current Superman, you'd have:
A). The problem of Superman not coming from Krypton after all, as Krypton has a quite well covered history which outlives that of earth.
B). Where the fuck did Red Son come from? Not from future earth, not from Krypton... So...
It's a pretty damn decent ending, wrapping up all loose ends.
      *BUT.*
Having said all that, if you're going back, why not go back a bit further?
Why not go back a few billion years?
We know that the Red Son came from outer space, and we know that Superman came from krypton.
And with the ending you proposed, superman would have to travel through dimensions to end up in the main DC universe.
Red Son, an alien from the planet Krypton lands on earth.
Earth ends up under united planetary rule, thanks to the efforts of Red Son.
Earth becomes extremely advanced in the distant future, and is destroyed.
Upon it's destruction, not one, but a good couple of life pods are launched.
These end up in a gravity well, sending them back billions of years to a solar system later named Roa, after a god residing over the solar system.
They settle on a planet, later to called Krypton, where, for hundreds of thousands of years, they would reign... until their destruction...
      And the rest, is history.

My only suggestion is stop being so damn awesome! You bring comics alive and have boosted my comics interest tenfold. As a complete comic novice, (I loved iron man then the movie got me hooked) you make comics completely accessible. You also give context outside the book's content, clarifying all the nuances. I also love your upload schedule! I can never be bored thanks to your intervention lol. Also peace will only last if its brought about by convincing arguments. Human beings inherently hate being forced to do anything, positive or not.

I have honestly found so much more interest in the world of comics thanks to you and this channel.
I can't say I like your random philosophical statements, as someone who's got a degree in that area. You simplify things in a way that makes me cringe in my soul sometimes "If you don't stop a robber, you're helping them" fails to take into account that life doesn't happen in a vacuum...what if you've a family that relies on you? That's 5 people, let's say. Just on a "each person has equal value" argument, that mindset falls apart and only works in exercises meant to expose underlying concepts.
As it is sensible to value yourself, those who love you and depend on you, etc, one is not at fault for the actions of another. If one follows such a vein of logic, you can say as well "If you have extra food in your house and someone is starving, you have starved them yourself" (and in fact, some early christian monks espoused this mindset) Such a view carried out equally in all situations is an argument against everything America stands for in this story (which is quite interesting, really)
I think you should avoid that stuff or learn to convey it a bit differently, but admittedly I'm probably not your average viewer. Just a bit of hopefully constructive (if not that, at least decent and honest and not too insulting) criticism. Not everyone spends huge portions of their life obsessing over details like philosophy students
That bit of bother aside, you're a smart guy who does great work and it's awesome to see you churning out content.
I haven't been so invested in a story in such a long time.
I think Superman being stopped by a letter shows he wasn't actually evil, he was truly trying to do what he thought was right. He felt that the long term was going to benefit from the temporary loss of freedom.
It both makes him a sort of 2d character (You JUST NOW, took to heart the obvious counter to the actions you want to take, Supes?) and strangely, makes him all the more real by showing that somewhere in the back of his mind, he might have felt swept on by events and steeled by the thought that "ends justify the means."
Having it be Lois... boy...such perfect writing. Of course, it's Lois. Absolutely perfect.
That ending though...goodness. I honestly got chills.

I like the way Superman was defeated but I don't dig how everything in the end just turns out to be a loop. So what, the Red Son story/elseworld is really just a time paradox? And if it is how did it become a time paradox?

    • @Deescovery1
      @Deescovery1 8 років тому +3

because I think during the ending they sent his ship back in time to avoid the destruction of the planet.

    • @BK-ku1zt
      @BK-ku1zt 7 років тому

pretty sure he DCJ understood that, doesn't excuse the causal loop.
Cusal loop is the particular type of paradox that this is and in this particular case it goes like this: descruction of the planet in the future causes superman to be sent back, causing the events of the comic ending with the destruction of the planet constantly looping over and over.
That alone is not a time paradox, that's just cause and effect.
The paradox comes in when you think about the cause of the causal loop. In the very first time-line in that particular reality there wouldn't have been a superman coming back because time wouldn't have run it's course yet so the new planet wouldn't have sent superman back to begin with, so that reality would have no superman.
Now if you say that the new planet was settled in that reality and the same thing happened which caused the loop then that too is a paradox because then the original time-line could never have happened which would have meant that the superman time-line would never have happened due to the sequential nature of time even when it comes to time-lines.

I like all the throwbacks to the olden days. It just shows the writer isn't throwing a curve ball because they can but is actually, in a sense, staying very true to the stories because he knows them.
Also not helping someone who is getting mugged is not the same as mugging them. One should be aware that offering assistance only when one is able is the real key. If someone sees another getting mugged, rushes over to help only to get mugged too then that was the wrong action. Not everyone has the ability to be a hero and the difference between a hero and a coward is often a wife and mortgage.
