- Hey friends, in today's video we're starting the process of making over our home theater room and I'm so excited to share it with you!
When we first built this home, we didn't have a whole lot of time to plan out what we wanted this space to feel like as we were using it, and now that we've been here for almost two years, we've finally figured out how our theater room will best serve our family and I'm so here for the transformation.
In today's video, we're talking
Audio placement mistakes and correction
Design plans for the room
and we'll be taping off the wall for the possible pattern that the wall trim may end up being.
It's a long one, so be sure to grab your favorite beverage and get cozy, and let's start making over this theater room to a nice contemporary and chic movie room that our family is going to love!!!!
Be sure to chime down in the comments and let me know if you are team fireplace or team storage all the way through, Tim would love to hear your thoughts.
As an A/V integrator I see many things that should have been done. First the TV should have stayed on the first wall as you always want the most space between you and the display. Your surround channels were positioned way too far back and needed to be over the listening position. Realistically what you should be doing is a room of this size is 5.2.2 Dolby ATMOS with the ATMOS channels positioned directly over the first row of seats. There was an easier way to get the wires to travel once you decided to switch things up and it’s called notching which you would have done at each ceiling joists. As it relates to light coming through the crack of the doors you can add a small piece of trim when you would paint the same color of the door and when closed it would fill the gap thus cancelling out the light that was coming through. What truly scares me is that whoever did the pre wire should have known all of this if they do this for a living. It’s always a dis-service to the client is the integrator can’t visualize what the retro wiring job should look like as soon as they see the room. Hopefully in the end the space will turn out how you envisioned it, and I look forward to seeing the results.
I actually told my husband the same thing during planning, we only needed 5 speakers but boys and their toys, lol.
If the room wasn’t so narrow I would’ve been willing to leave it facing the way it was but from a function standpoint I just don’t like walking in to the back of the couch and not having the clearance around the seating we need to walk.
The speakers are in now and while not ideal they don’t sound bad, they didn’t in the old set up either I just really hated the layout.
Well enjoy this layout better and while the audio might not technically be “perfect” it still is really nice and well enjoy it.
Thanks for your positive feedback and I hope you keep watching to see how it all comes out.
Enjoy your weekend
I agree with you, it pained me to watch this. It really did.
We are in the beginning process of building a custom home. This video was so helpful with placements of speakers, lights, seating, and storage. I know your space will be amazing it is so planned out. Congratulations📽!!
Oh yay I’m so glad it helped. This wasn’t a room I put a lot of thought into and it’s costing me to fix it so for you to have a plan going in is amazing. Congratulations on your home I’m sure it’s going to be beautiful!
I am so excited for you! I'm doing mine alone, and it is taking forever. But i'm having a ball. Looking forward to seeing how everything turns out!
These projects seem to just never end lol lol lol but I enjoy all of it! I’m sure your space is going to look amazing 🤩
You have encouraged me to get on it over Spring Break. I will paint the media room and my husband’s office. Our room set up is similar, but my snack area will be on the opposite side of the room. I love seeing all the spaces come together in your home 😊
Yes friend pull out them paint rollers and let’s get it! Spring Break is next week for us so I won’t be painting just yet, but I can not wait! What color are you doing in the media room?
Behr Dark Secret…a nice moody grey. Considered black, but I was over picking colors at that point 😂
Ha girl YES I'm excited also!!! I've always wanted a theater room in my house. I have a Pinterest file with ideas.
My Pinterest boards are finally coming to life lol so exciting!!!
Hey, lady. I'm so glad you're working on the media. But it seems like this room is going to be something other than a media room and it seems so busy from what you're adding. You moved the tv because of the light in the space, but then you are adding more lights around the room. There will be glares and light issues when watching tv. I understand it's your home and you can do whatever you want but I just wanted to share so you can think about the lighting. When we built we put our tv system at the entrance of the room. The builder was so against it but we kept it there because we had planned out the media perfectly. The speakers we selected have paintable fronts. Our family of 6 have enjoyed the space. Your family will also.
Hey lady, that’s not exactly it. I moved the TV because the furniture placement doesn’t work and if I move the furniture the audio no longer works like we wanted it to, so everything is moving so we can have the furniture placement I want. The lights are for cosmetic purposes we won’t have them in while we’re doing movie night and they’ll be adjustable for anything else. I have a plan and it’s going to be bomb just keep watching, you’ll see it all come together and it will be anything but busy lol.
Thank you for sharing. We are turning one of our bedrooms into a media room and it's a 16x12. Hopefully, it will work. Also, I'm team Tim for the fireplace. Can you please share your electrician and drywall repair person?
Oh that should be plenty of space. I haven’t hired the contractors yet I made some adjustments to the plan that I’m going to implement first then hire them to come do lighting and patch the drywall
Great video
Thank you Sharon!!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Are you putting up a projector screen or a large tv. Is the current tv that is mounted going to be the theater setup?
No projector at least not right now. The tv is 85 inches and the audio people placed the speakers where he could go up to 98 inches if he chooses too. TV is it for now
Do you have 4 or 6 speakers in the ceiling? Those speakers would be your Atmos height channels. Where are your side and back surrounds channels. You just don’t put subs anywhere, they require good placement as well! All those speakers have to be assigned in the AVR than calibrated to get the sound right. That looks like a Denon AVR, which one is it?
There’s 4 speakers up there and I think the back to are the back surround sound. And the front are the Atmos, I think…. As far as the Denon, you are correct, I have no clue which one it is… 🤦🏾♀️ The audio techs hooked it all up and it’s working properly I just didn’t understand sound plus furniture placement plus function when we did the sound consult while we were building two years ago and had it pre-wired. Now that they are in and we actually got professionals to come in and help us install the actual speakers I get it a little more, but still not enough to really make me jump up and down lol. Tim is the audio guy, and he understands what’s going on, I just make stuff look pretty which is why I probably explained the setup wrong lol.
@@KaeWhitaker Your front stage, side and back surrounds should all be at ear level pointed at the main listening position. They are in the ceiling, but, sound is going right into the floor, and not at the MLP.
It absolutely matters where every speaker is placed, especially the subs. Poor sub placement can drown out other audio (boomy) instead of mixing in naturally.
Ok
Sorry, no fireplace! You are gonna need sound absorption panels, otherwise sound will be bouncing off the walls. I see your vision from the picture that was shown, that does look nice!. Remember, less is more! Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
We’re going to add acoustic panels behind the tv the ones that look like slats and he is dead set on this fireplace so it’s going in lol. I’ll get creative on how to buffer the sound. It sounds amazing in her when there’s furniture and stuff we just needed to move stuff around to make the layout work
@@KaeWhitaker Plan your work, work your plan. Once done, you may want to calibrate your system and level match all your speakers!
@@wendellwendellb339 now you know I don’t know what level match means lol but I’ll repeat what you said to Tim and I’m sure he’ll know lol thank you for your advice and watch appreciate it!
@@KaeWhitaker That’s cool, just wanted to give some pointers. It’s a hobby we as Home Theater enthusiasts like to do!
@@wendellwendellb339 I see lol. I’ve had quite a few of you all chime in and the advice is pretty good. Thanks again
I'm just starting watching the video and explaining the speaker placement isn't right and that's what's partially impacting the sound. The way your set up WAS would have worked well if you did Tiered seating. The front hi speakers should be Atmos. EVERYTHING IN THE CEILING should be Atmos. Atmos doesn't come from just the rear hi. I can explain if you like. I made some similar mistakes with my home theater ...andddddd, the sub placement DOES matter. Good luck sister
Thanks for your input I’m glad you understand audio. The room layout didn’t work for us but it’ll will be all better now. Thanks for watching!
@KaeWhitaker one thing , be mindful of hard surfaces. That's what makes the sound bounce around and give " false echos". You're doing an AMAZING job so far. BTW, love the offices !!!
@@FHGwood yes I’m thinking of adding curtains but I don’t like the look 😂 audio is so annoying but I’m hoping the flip of the room and adding some soft surfaces will help. Pray for us friend pray for us lol
@KaeWhitaker I'm still watching you lay it out. It's gonna be fine. You can even use the throw blankets to absorb some of the reflections. Wish yall lived in the A. I'd help yall with that and you can help me with trimming my bedroom out (first time, I'm a wiring type of guy). Hope my wife don't end up putting me out 🤣🤣🤣
lol lol lol that audio had us like what?!?! Tim understands better now so he was good with the move but initially they had us all messed up. I’m feeling pretty good about the move hadn’t even tried the audio again but I think he heard it and it was good.
