  • The Bean Arches that we moved last week need to be secured. They are cheap garden arches and are not strong enough on their own but doubling them up and some bamboo canes make them really strong!
These are the arches i have: amzn.to/49Opasm
Also this week we are Picking Asparagus, Chard and Nine Star Broccoli. Earthing up Potatoes and Getting the shed tidy for spring!
There is also a fun trip to see the premier of Swede Caroline at the Genesis Cinema.
Have a look at the trailer here: • SWEDE CAROLINE (2024) ...

One of my favorite parts of your videos is watching you make soup by wandering around the garden and finding what looks good, returning to the shed to cook, and then delivering bowls of soup for you and your Mum in your greenhouse. So cozy. So real.

The bean arch looks great. We have one the same and need to rebuild 2 long beds so we may get another 2 arches for them. They would make a nice tunnel to the greenhouse by our kitchen. At the moment most of our arches are made from chicken wire and fencing wire.
We grow far too many French and Runner beans and do not eat all the Greek Gigantes so we are doing butter beans and trying edammame this year.

I remember garlic fear, lol! My maternal grandfather swore blind his whole life that he HATED garlic : what he didn't know was that my mum sneaked garlic into pretty much all the dishes he said were his favourites 😄😎
Thanks for bringing back that memory!

It's really surprising how long we can put up with and keep adding to an untidy situation just by telling ourselves that we are too busy or we'll tackle it and sort it later. Spring has arrived,no it's gone and it's back and it's gone again next season will be autumn 😊😊😅😂

Hey Jessie, All hail the tidy plot day then in 24 hours it will change to farewell to the last day of the tidy plot. Until we meet again next year! Last year I tried 3 varieties of French beans all green and only had a couple as the squirrels just trashed every plant. This year we have a prevention to their distraction. Looking forward to those this year. I might look for some of the Franchi varieties next year. I do always look forward to Tuesday to see your video. I do try many varieties based on what you grow and like as well as other channels also. Take care be safe bye for now, Steven

Hi Jessie. Please do try the chilli - garlic cocktail for watering your plants, it really does work against slugs and aphids, also you won’t need to put the chilli down for the rodents as you already have it in the cocktail

The tunnel arch of dreams! I love what you have done with them Jessie. The dahlia beds along the back will look stunning. Your compost manure as a mulch on your dahlias after planting should hopefully deter the pesky slugs and snails. That dries out to a nice crispy layer they don’t like much. Looking forward to seeing the display 😊

    Good morning Jessie and mum
Your she looks fabulous. I’m loving your arches all in line in and row, can’t wait to see all your bean vines growing over them all, and Would be nice to see a bit of floral vines along with your beans you are planning on growing on your arches. Your allotment is really impressive this year with all you and your mom have been doing on your allotment. Your greenhouse looks spectacular love your new flooring where you had moved the planting table to the side looks like it works much better than having it in the back of your green house. Oh the cosmos flowers they would absolutely look lovely around your plot. I may have to go buy some myself to plant up in my backyard here in Arizona. Thanks for sharing your allotment videos I’m always looking forward to watching your videos every week. Have a great rest of your day. Karen from Arizona

I have 2 9star broccoli plants on the go and have taken a cutting from one which appears to be growing, I also have 4 large taunten Dean kale plants which have kept us in greens all winter. Currently I have 6 cuttings from those growing well. You would be welcome to some but I'm not sure they would survive the rubbish post at the moment. This year I'm trying a new one called cottagers kale. Which I think is perenial.

Hi Jess, the Neckargold white bean is a very recommented and loved type in germany, a lot of people grow it here in there allotments and home gardens (me, too), as well as the Blaue Hilde. They seem to be a general favourite, probably because they don´t turn stringy and taste loveley. Beside them, I will try something similar to you, a bean called Mosaik bean, up to 50 cm long (we will see) and colour from green, purple and sorts, a climber, but not flat. We will see the result later on, but I am exited. Thank you for your updates and work. S

Hi Jessie, I’ve recently rediscovered the joys of gardening, I’ve always had potatoes, runner beans, tomatoes and cucumbers, but not very much else, my neighbour told me she was getting a new greenhouse, which inspired me to replace my tired old one which I bought secondhand 30 years ago for £50! It’s now been in place for 3 weeks, but already I’ve planted purple sprouting, carrots, spring onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, chillis, pak Choi, lettuce mostly in containers and lots of flower seeds .Thanks to you, JB, Ivan, and others you’ve inspired me to try something a bit different, heritage tomatoes for instance and nine star, which I wasn’t aware of. I also have 3 chickens and a cat. Unfortunately the waiting list for allotments is about 6 years here on the Isle of Wight, so I’ll concentrate on the garden. Thanks for your blogs of which I’ve got lots to catch up with.

Will be planting out my first lot of garlic for the season tomorrow (Australia), at least 72 cloves, and same amount next month, so no garlic fears here. I’m pretty sure back in ‘85 garlic was a staple here. Probably the influence of all the Italian migrants from the 50’s & 60’s, and thank goodness they introduced us to their food culture otherwise we’d still be eating the English diet of meat and three boiled veg, no offence. (The cuisine of my childhood because my mum was from UK)

Hiya…I’d recommend Sunshine yellow bean, it’s from the same breeder as the Cobra. I’ve tried purple ones but I get infuriated that they turn green when cooked, unless you can suggest another one? I’m really tempted to buy some nine star? I’ve just bought some Rapini to try 🎉 love seeing your unusual veg. As much as I love parsnips/turnips/cabbage etc, it’s just me and hubby & we don’t eat load of those food types…if that makes sense. Asian greens, chard etc etc

9 star seed is difficult to find here in the US but I managed to find some 3-4 years ago. I haven't managed to get it to survive to maturity yet. IDK if the source was weak or it just had difficulty with the harsh conditions I have to grow in. I have several other perennial brassicas I'm trying to establish as well, but it's a constant battle with APHIDS and cabbage butterflies here too. We are starting to see more variety in these plants (particularly tree collards/kales) and I acquired a Taunton Dean last year that is still alive (barely) from perhaps the only source in the US. I'm hoping more of these perennials start to become more popular here in the future. Likewise, with onions and chards. Love not having to plant every year over and over.

That caution over garlic passage in your book made me laugh. It reminds me of the difference I've noticed between Italian cookery and Chinese cookery. I've seen Italian chefs rubbing plates with garlic or throwing a bashed clove in olive oil, warming it a while then discarding it just so the oil had a hint of garlic - very restrained with the garlic. I've also heard Italian chefs insist on removing the green garlic germ as they say it tastes bitter - something I've never noticed myself. Contrast that between Chinese cookery where they use 3 or 4 roughly chopped pieces of garlic and it all gets flash fried in a wok and stays in. Maybe the restraint doesn't apply to all Italian chefs though. Not sure. I'm definitely in the lots of garlic camp myself.
Btw... I've got loads of broad beans growing. My first time growing them and they are nearly 3 foot tall and covered in flowers. I am looking forward to trying your broad bean on toast recipe in a few weeks - with a decent amount of garlic. Have been looking forward to trying that dish for ages.

I'm going to be growing some this year along side Cobra beans which I agree taste fantastic - even when large - and are super productive too. I'm pretty excited to have steaming bowls of green and yellow french beans on the table in the summer.
