Mark, your intro songs are just superb! Fantastic melodic taste, great tone. Those on an album and I‘d be a happy customer. Anyway, thought I‘d share that with you, no matter how insignificant my opinion might be in the grand scheme of things.
Every time I think to myself … you set the bar so high on that intro music (including production), how will you come back in the following video BUT boom, everytime you blow me away. So incredably creative
The goal really is “always be improving and growing” I pretty much am always hopeful that I look back more than two months ago with a bit of embarrassment at the mix / production / writing I was at.
I saw this on your board in another one of your videos and asked if they had released a new pedal that I was unaware of. I'm sure you got many more comments about it. You did a great job of keeping quiet. The EUNA and OAMP live on my board as always ons. If this is as good as those, I'm sure it was ra real challenge to not answer the comments.
Okay I don't want to be asking for so much but I feel compelled to ask...could you make a little (or big) lesson on the chord voicings and such that you use so often?
It’s actually something I’ve been asked about before and, really, the reason I haven’t done a video on it is because I don’t know nearly enough theory or really about my instrument to actually know what these chord shapes are or why they work. It’s just experimentation and trying things out in a desperate attempt to keep things fresh and it happens to work. But hopefully someday I’ll find a compelling way to make that video.
@@markjohnstonofficial That makes total sense to me. You have great angles in your videos so I think I can probably work a lot of out myself. To be honest, that is probably a more beneficial way to do it anyway 🙂
This is, in my opinion, the actual most valuable piece of media I’ve seen on embellishing progressions. ua-cam.com/video/mT3lzQhO79k/v-deo.htmlsi=PAt_GESb7R104TbC
Hey Brother Mark, Seal here. Just wanted to say that I’m a fan and that I really appreciate these videos you make and the passion with which you approach every one. Coming from a studio background myself, I love the 29 series and have both the Jfet and Flower on a couple of boards. Please keep making these videos, I’m sure I speak for most of us here in saying that we all love and look forward to them. ✌🏾&💜
Great overview as always Mark! As a post-hardcore fan I'm loving the tunes you are writing these days. 29 Pedals don't miss! Im loving the OAMP & FLWR. I recently picked up the Tallon Dual Drive and have been loving the K side as a boost/sweetener using the low/high to suit the pickups. Would you think the JFET is different enough to warrant?
Love your videos man. Such incredible tones and riffs. Question. Would this pedal be a legit replacement for the OAMP? Love my OAMP but it takes up a lot of real estate on the pedalboard. Any thoughts?
Hey Mark, I’m curious what you find exceptional about the astra? I feel like it’s the only modulation pedal finding a spot on your board these days? Thanks
Mark thanks for your very detailed review. I have a question. I have a blackstone and a Kingsley page. At lower gain and just above unity in a mid scooped setting they both add so much to tone. More weight and pop and clarity. Like the cali 76 but without compression but even more good. However my board cannot accommodate these. Kingsley draw too much power( I’m maxed) and blackstone must be first in line. With current setup I can’t do this. Do you feel the 29 jfet does this. Not looking for dirt at all. Just tone and pop enhancement something to replace my compressor as I’m just using it for pop . Tried the Jackson prism but it was a tone sucker.
I love your style. I actually ordered one of your Balaguer Espadas. I'd appreciate if you (or another viewer) could provide a few examples of albums/bands I could check out for similar post-hardcore(?)/ambient vibes.
I guess specific records would be Touche amore - stage four Arms length - never before seen never again found Ls dunes - past lives Anything movements has done And of course the hotelier - home like noplace is there
Yeah but that's not $300 so no fun! :-) I actually have one in my cart at the moment. I had one with my iridium and didn't like it, but I think I just didn't like the iridium. @@stephenwares8317
I did some testing with it when the UA pedals first came in (I’ve actually had the JFET longer than the Ruby or dream) and my only real qualm, and this was true of most boost pedals, was that I’m not a fan of “volume as a method of breakup” in amp sims nearly as much as I am when it comes to tube amps. But even moreso because I was running my wet effects before the amps at a time which needed to change to make that work.
As stated in the video; I’ve got ground noise issues in my studio and usually so the sound samples on humbuckers for that reason and used a gate for the samples to quiet things down. But it’s entirely my studio.
can it sub for the EUNA as a tone conditioner/buffer, in your opinion? I need something like the EUNA to recapture some tone loss in my chain but would dig the option of adding gain like a Shin-ei B1G
Couldn’t say. I have a Simplifier deluxe but it’s been out on loan for like a year and a half. I always felt like it struggled with drive, but especially volume based drive so I’m not sure I’d be confident in this pairing.
Nope because if you watch my videos you’ll notice best / favorite comes up VERY infrequently. In this video I literally say that this is tied w the benson boost as my favorite boost. I’ll point out what’s exceptional about a piece of gear but I don’t make any untrue statements about my feelings / where they rank for anything, ever.
Do you think you would buy this pedal if you weren't a UA-camr? I love the aesthetic and sound of this box, but it's so much money. I know all of his gear is expensive, but I'm surprised this is as much as the FLWR.
For pedals like this that cost a fair amount I’d really like to hear the pedal plugged in ALONE and direct and turned off and on at various levels of its gain and volume range to hear how much noise it is or isn’t adding.
@@markjohnstonofficialhave you ever tried an Electro-Harmonix Hum Debugger? That would be a fun pedal demo to see if it can eliminate the noise without affecting the tone.
Ls dunes - past lives - blender. tone with an attitude, can single coils, EUNA + Benson Geranium + 29 Pedals JFET provide adequate thrust to take me there?
I think that'll end up depending a lot on your amp. Dunes tends to lean more Humbucker at least 50-75% of the time (Travis is, I believe all Les Paul). The guitars in Blender are pretty grind-y so I'd probably keep a boost in the equation and grab a drive of some manner.
Man, that demo in the beginning was amazing!

I know you're a fan of the Benson Germanium Boost as well; how would you compare the two?
Very good question

The new mono boards are the BEST.
@@markjohnstonofficialAre they the new rail pedalboards? They look super nice!
Ordered ✅ Did you run this on 9 or 18v?
9 but like with all 29 pedals; it doesn’t matter what you run it at, above or below. It’ll all self regulate to 9v
What’s the difference between this and something like a preamp pedal?

This is very much a send up of Flowers and You by Touche Amore.

Heavily recommend touche amore, arms length, movements, AFI for genre touch points im emulating

Not in the same way. Gain at zero will give you some mild tone shaping but I am such a huge advocate for the EUNA on almost all boards.
How does it pair with an ampless rig? I run a DSM Simplifier, wondering if the characteristics are similar or if it reacts differently...
