  • Encounters are the basic unit of play in a tabletop RPG. This video will teach you about the basic structures of an encounter and a process for designing them. Skilled game masters have a basic understanding of how to design encounters. Once you get it, you can improvise encounters with confidence.

Very informative and to-the-point. Putting together a sandbox campaign and figuring out encounters now for Advanced OSE. I oddly enjoy the stripped-down presentation style that gets right to the meat and bones of the topic. There's a lot of great youtubers out there that have nuggets of good DM advice in their videos, but sometimes it feels like it's more about the "production" of the video itself or they didn't refine their thoughts into something more succinct and usable before hitting record. No rambling, no tangents, and no over-the-top "presenter" voice here. Love it. Subscribed.

Couldn't agree more. Too many channels just ramble on about all their personal nonsense and try to baffle you with their bs and hardly ever provide useful or enjoyable content. Get to the point and leave it at that. Less is more.

Great video! I really like your videos. I just want to comment:
I think it's important to anticipate/telegraph risks (and rewards) so players can make an informed decision and have the agency to face the challenge/obstacle or not.
players should actively seek out information, of course, and the DM should also be generous in detailing the issues that piqued the players' interest.

I'd love to see you do a couple of example encounters that you craft using this method all the way through- seeing an example always bring a method to life for me or makes it "click"

Not especially useful to me, since I operate under a different paradigm. However, I completely agree with you on that puzzle & problem thing, I think Extra Credits had talked about that in one of their very early video over a decade ago too.
I also took a look at your blog, and found the article about finite and infinite games interesting, but I think it is not really useful when applying to RPGs. I mean sure, in an open sandbox game like you seem to prefer the infinite approach might be fitting, but for me as someone who is more about character arcs, catharsis, and all that narrative stuff, that is simply not working. For me an infinite game mans boredom at the table. Sure, the designing aspect and maybe eventually getting people to try my system, that is an infinite game I am looking forward to reach one day, but in the game world I want stories and thus the two game approaches both fail for me there.

Thanks for taking the time to look at my work. It's not for everyone. I appreciate you giving it some consideration.
