The worst red flags, lol. I can see that ad discription now . . . (brand new only dropped half a micrometer . . . with only a slight small issue that is "easy" to fix and that affects 1% of consoles)
Great video Steve. This Switch was 100% liquid damaged at some point, and probably why the trace was burnt on the ribbon. Also likely that the back-light was burnt out because of the high voltage it was subject to. What I tend to do sometimes is split the screen layers and replace just the back-light, and frankenstein 2 screens together to make one good screen. Works great if you're careful separating the screen 😁
With coming off of eBay, it's not surprising more was wrong with it than it first looked like. Great fix btw, glad you could keep give life to it again.
Couldnt you have just left all those components in the gray switch since technically you fixed it lol. But the turquoise one would sell quicker anyways. Good stuff 👍
Maybe they thought it was a wall switch and was trying to figure out how it could work in a house... After that was a fail . . . They went with plan b. They looked up it's most common problem and posted it as a "easy fix" on fleabay. (just randomly made up that, but It could be possable)
The multi tests to narrow down what is wrong is pretty cool, I hate having to do it sometimes but it does have to be done to figure out what's wrong more often than not, Nice work Steve
More awesome repairs. I love watching your repair vids. I find your repairs fascinating, especially opening up equipment that I historically thought was inaccessible. I also love that you bring new life to things that some people throw away. Thanks Tonics fix
I just got my iFixit tool kit yesterday and already took apart an old Xbox One and gave it a good cleaning and added the perfect amount of thermal paste.
This thing was DEFINITELY the result of a botched repair job. The pins of the ribbon cable and connector being damaged implies improper removal of the former from the latter.
been here since 20k subs crazy how time fly Steve I remember you only had that wood table and some tools , no tv or studio, like my father used to say the harder you work the more successful you will be .
Would you be able to tell me why Tronics always makes a statement about the correct amount of thermal paste? Is it a joke or a commonly messed up step?
Great video, as always! I did saved a Switch lite just a month after they got released. The person tried to install some modchip of some sort and screwed it up. So, I undid what he had done, replaced broken, poped, capacitors on the nvidia APU, replaced the charge IC and other overheated caps and saved the poor thing. My kids have been using it ever since, but I really thought I wouldn't get it done without schematics. Again, we should all save electronics like you do!
When I replaced the top screen on a new Nintendo 2DS xl which has probably been dropped it did the same thing. Those screens can be very fragile and even more if their general integrity has been compromised. Glad you got this switch lite running again 😄
Love your videos! Love seeing all the different electronics given a new lease of life when normally people may have just thrown them away! Keep up the excellent work!
Hey Tronics, I bought that exact iFixit toolkit and I'm honestly so happy with it. My only grouse so far is that it didn't come with a plastic pick, but I use an old guitar pick as a sub.
I genuinely purchased the iFixIt Pro Tech Tool Kit after having seen it in so many of your videos. It was a substantial upgrade to the one I had previously, and I can second it in saying that it is well worth the money.
The layer you removed was polarised glass / or plexi. LCD normally is bright and invisible to the naked eye. Polarised glass or / plexi is used not only to make LCD viewable to the naked eye but also inverts the image. If you took a calculator with a standard LCD screen and took the top layer glass off you would not see the image well but turning the glass upside down would invert the image so you had a black background with light symbols apposed too the standard bright back ground and dark symbols we are all accustomed too. I did this to my calculators to make them look cool and different :)
This was fascinating to watch. So many lessons I learned about narrowing down the cause of an error. Funnily enough, it wouldn't have been as interesting if it was an "easy" fix.
I started watching you fixing switch consoles well before I got one!!I hope I never need them of course but your line of videos on switch repair are awesome !! Kudos & well done 👍🏻
Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, well any manufacturer should provide the parts so items like this can be easily repaired rather than the broken item being put on the scrap heap.
My ps4 will take awhile to load the Home Screen and whole loading it freezes in the process. Then during my gameplay it will shut off out of no where without a red light. Can you explain what is happening?
Very good analysis and fix again steve. I'm pretty impressed how they build the switch. With video's like this people can learn so much more then only looking on the outside. Keep it up! Hope you'll find a broken ps5 with a real challange soon.
That looked like a challenging fix! great work, with so many (seemingly) small problems some of those were from manufacture? or a bad attempt at a repair? good job
Wasn't the problem clear at 6:35 ? You can see something strange in the top left corner of the screen using the flashlight..just a question. Great job btw. 😊
Fun Fact about Microsoft: They've announced that they're moving into a more repairable and eco-friendly future, so hopefully Xboxes become easier to fix in the coming years!
The grey one may have looked fine but he mentioned it was faulty im guessing the whole motherboard on the grey switch was faulty so he could have either replaced the motherboard from the blue into the grey to have a fully functional grey switch or replace the screen from the grey one into the blue one which is what he did to have a fully working blue one. as I assume the blue one would sell faster than the grey due to it being more attractive with the colour of it.
Hmm, question: what was the issue from the "donor unit"? It feels like a disassemble from a smaller problem unit to fix a bigger problem unit... If we put money into consideration, maybe fix the donor unit is a better option?
I've just recently discovered your channel and must say that your videos are both entertaining and educational... a dying breed on YT :P Great content! Those iFixit tool sets also look amazing, I will eventually get myself one of those.
Noticed that the connector you replaced the locking tab on had a chunk of plastic missing near where it said 1A, looks like someone messed with it before. The switch you took the locking tab from didn't have the chunk missing.
Why didn't you just put the guts of the turquoise one into the grey case? Didn't see the point of lifting the screen and putting the grey one into the turquoise one. Either way it's a good repair and glad it worked out!
Great video but I gotta ask. Knowing that the teal switches screen was the culprit, wouldn't it have been less work and less risk to just put the working components from to teal switch into the grey one? I understand that this is an instructional video, It just seems like a lot of unnecessary work at the risk of 2 broken switches. If you had a similar problem in the future would you do it differently now that you have this video out, showing how to replace the screen?
I'd do it exactly the same. The point wasn't to do a repair as fast or efficiently as possible. The point was to make a good video that people would want to watch. There are a number of things I would do differently with most of my videos if I was just fixing the device and not filming it for a video.
SHOULD BE AN EASY FIX. Red flags :)
Lol...yep!

At least you got one Switch out of two.

You can do it!

I have a HUGE sneaking suspicion. that this switch might have been disassembled by a child or even an adult thinking they "know" what they are doing.
I fixed my backplate because it was broken and dirty, and then I fixed my Joy-Con rail. Its really not hard.

Sometimes that's the fastest/best way. If there were schematics I'd have something else to go on but without them I just have to use what I have.
More awesome repairs. I love watching your repair vids.
