No matter how many people you paddle with, YOU are still ultimately responsible for yourself. A poor choice of line, a relaxed or awkward stroke, an unseen obstacle, or just bad luck, anything can get you in trouble on dangerous waters. You must know your skills and limitations and be able to self rescue, because others you paddle with may still not be able to assist with your rescue. You cannot depend on being rescued by anyone except yourself. Practiced skills, solid river reading knowledge and knowing your abilities and most important your limitations are the best defense to avoiding tragedy on the river. MOST important of all, some rapids and rivers are just not navigable if you choose to live to paddle another day. The river and water will ALWAYS have the final say! I really liked this video.
I always avoid this type of person. I knew one before. But he ended up stuck under a log. I helped his son put a plaque on the canyon wall where he died. From that day on I just avoided that kind of person. I had 46 years of incredible river trips before I got to old. People say I almost always have a smile.
I totally feel the same way I used to do the same thing now I don't see my backs all messed up maybe I need to get back on the river... damn I Miss paddling
CaPsLocK I am sure that it wasn't his goal to almost drown just for a short film... But it happened and it is important that those incidents are reported and shown because even the best paddler can make a mistake that may have terrible consequences. It is important to show that nobody is 'safe'
pure narcissism.... I miss good old kayaking films when cameras where not flying around and people where not so serious about their own selfs.......Never kayak alone!!!!!!!
I tend to agree. The music and sweeping shots are so over the top. While I enjoy the sentiment behind it sadly the production kills any genuine feeling for me. Don’t paddle alone.
alone in the river.....well... soooooo dangerous...Ok it's sick, the image is nice but the day he will be stuck against a rock.... how to say ..... he will be all alone like a jerk waiting for the end!
It's no different than free soloing in climbing. If someone is aware of the risks and drops in alone, they know what they've signed on for. I don't know that he's really condoning it himself other than he recognizes it's a personal decision he's made and he chose to document it. Good story, good footage, cool place
Solo paddling is not ideal but if it's 'easy' whitewater that you're familiar with and there are no super dangerous features it's definitely within the range of acceptable risk. Certainly way less consequential than paddling class V+ with a whole team of boaters and a rescue crew. Paddling class V solo with killer sieves like in this video seems reckless. This guy should paddle class IV or III with no sieves death holes or strainers or risk of flush drowning and save the class V for paddling with friends.
Great inspiration for facing one’s fears. Sharing the water with son is excellent, it’s great when generations have a common bond.

Brought back memories of when I first taught my oldest son and daughter whitewater paddling. I as guide, instructor, and gear master.
Many thanks for such a high quality production! Big Wow from an old guy!
This video is simply insane!
This was absolutely beautifully made, I love it

Saw what looks similar to my old Accent paddle in the thumb nail. Beautiful river. Edit: this is why we wear solid shell helmets

I find it sad that all those short films now revolve around close calls or even deaths. That shouldn't be the main theme of all those Short Films..

That draw stroke is going to hurt him. Get those elbows down and rotate
Big words for a guy who can barely keep his bow dry.

Solo kayaking is irresponsible and should not be encouraged or condoned.
