      @@bombardier2011 but I tell you another thing: this box set together with the stereo box were in 2009 some of the last releases by EMI/Parlophone. that is the record company that has released the beatles records from day one in 1962 in the UK. this record company was sold in 2011 to warner music. the 2014 versions are already by warner and no more parlophone.
      and because that 2009 box was the last release by EMI they released the best sounding version.

    Since the release of 090909 I am still quite happy with my mono box and love it for all the pros and cons. Unfortunately, listening carefully with headphones and conducting comparative studies, I find more and more flaws. Although the packaging is beautiful, what, of course, is important, the 090909 sound obviously is not for audiophiles as it was advertised. Overall, the 090909 edition is far from the best. Let`s face it at last. How to get on with that? Easily. The best stereo for early albums can be found in US Capitol boxes 2004-2006 and UK stereo 1987 cd box (later albums). The best mono for early albums can be found in UK stereo 1987 cd box and EP cd 1992 box. Pepper, White Album, Revolver, Rubber Soul from 090909 mono box ain`t bad too. However, If I could buy newly made remixes in cheaper editions instead, I would ignore it altogether and saved some money.
    The main reason I don’t regret buying a mono box is that I collect mini vinyl CDs. If not for this circumstance, it would be best to just download everything you need in mono and buy a new stereo. I don't think the remixed albums are perfect, they have a lot of absurdities and illogicals, but if you need to stop at something, this is the way.

    • @fussanchez2716
      @fussanchez2716 2 роки тому +1

      The Capitol Albums were made from generations-down copy tapes and had vintage "non-audiophile" mastering practices. In addition, the first four mono 1987 CD's were transferred on a stereo machine which is a terrible practice. I think you may need to re-evaluate the work of the Abbey Road engineers' 5+ year efforts.

    • @MarkP
      @MarkP  6 років тому +6

      If I'm not mistaken these were a limited edition box set. If that's the case it would make sense they are more expensive since fewer of them were made so the demand is high for them. I think there was an initial run that sold out quickly so after being so popular they made another larger run of a limited quantity.

    HOWARD WEBER asks ------- Are the 4 songs from Yellow Submarine in true mono ( mixed in mono by George Martin ) or are they just the stereo combined? Also, I`ve never heard Across the Universe in mono. Again I ask, is it true mono or just the stereo combined?

    • @TheDylandProductions
      @TheDylandProductions 4 роки тому +3

      The 4 songs from Yellow Submarine ARE true mono. ("It's Only A Northern Song" was already always mono on the original - check it out for yourself!) In the case of "Hey Bulldog" and "It's All Too Much," the original mono mixes prepared in the 1960's actually never saw the light of day until this release. They are original mixes, not just stereo mix-downs.
      The World Wildlife Fund benefit album was originally released in mono and stereo, so the "Across the Universe" that appears in Mono Masters is the mono version of that. Also not a mix-down, but an original mix.
      Pretty sweet! :D

    Why do people prefer mono over stereo?

    • @lucalone
      @lucalone 4 роки тому +9

      not generally. but those early beatles stereo mixes have a sort of ping-pong mix: the vocals are completely in the right speaker while the rest of the music comes from the left. and the mono mixes are the only mixes that were mixed with the beatles in the studio. the stereo mixes were done later just by the engineers. stereo in the 60's was like 7.1 of today for the beatles back then^

    • @TheDylandProductions
      @TheDylandProductions 3 роки тому +12

      Personal preference. In Beatles fans' case, it's a bit more complex.
      Often times the stereo mixes were done months, if not an entire YEAR later (as in Please Please Me's case), without the supervision of John, Paul, George, Ringo, or George Martin, and were done in a hurry. Often times, different mixes, takes, and effects were accidentally used.
      Please Please Me, for example, had the harmonica overdub added to the mono only. So, for the stereo, they had to add the mono on top of another take of stereo for those bits, and at the end of the song, the two takes become out of sync quite terribly. The drums just get all muddy and it's very unprofessional sounding.
      Help was a completely different vocal take (and instrumental mix) to better fit/suit the lip sync of the film.
      I Am The Walrus's 2nd half (with the radio coming in and out) was only ever done in mono (and live, at that!), and thus, the stereo version merges back down to mono for the final portion of the song!
      Some songs run at significantly different speeds, often due to accidents in mastering, which totally change the timbre of the song and the singer's voice. For other songs, nobody knows why there are the differences that there are.
      Subjectively, I (and a few others I know) actually prefer mono to stereo for several reasons, too. Not only was 60's stereo seen as an expensive gimmick and was poorly supported (at first), but some people, especially on headphones, just get an ear-ache with super wide stereo.
      Just as you wouldn't want someone whispering (or shouting) directly into one of your ears, while clapping their hands in your other. It can be disorienting and unbalancing - and the severity of which is different for every person. Some people even have hearing problems in one ear, and thus can't get the full effects of stereo!
      Monaural audio tends to have a sort of clustered/compressed quality, with all instruments competing for 'space' in one speaker/equally from both headphones/speakers. I, subjectively, think it lends itself to rock music better than stereo does. All live music concerts are in-person presented in mono, since, you wouldn't want, depending on where you're sitting, part of the audience to only hear half of the music. Mono ensures that everybody, no matter where they're sitting, hears the same thing.
      Acoustics and harmonics and room reverberation frequencies aside, whenever you listen to an instrument (whether it be piano, or guitar, or flute, or whatever) IRL, that's practically mono too! Since, if you're a few feet away, the sound will seemingly come from one source and hit both ears at the same time.
      I just prefer mono generally, aside from instances where that extra space is necessary - like with reverb on classical/orchestral recordings. Generally, with rock or pop music, instruments are artificially 'spaced out' in the stereo field with stereo in a way that's unnatural - especially on headphones. I prefer when a mix is more realistically done. And, generally, mono doesn't have some of the same problems stereo has with that! (although, it can have its own problems too)
      In the case of The Beatles, from Please Please Me through 'til Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, mono is the only Beatle-approved "canonical" way to listen to their music. Magical Mystery Tour was the first album (originally EP) where a stereo/mono difference was supervised by a member of the band. (George Harrison's Blue Jay Way's backwards chorus bits during the breaks in the verses) The White Album being the first full true album actually supervised in both Mono and Stereo.
      And even then, Ringo Starr's personal copy of The White Album (which he recently sold) was a mono copy! So, even by 1968, the Beatles themselves were still listening to mono at home.
      Yes, the band was influential and revolutionary, but they clung to mono slightly behind the times until 1969, when they fully embraced stereo for their last 3 albums. (Yellow Sub, Abbey Road, and Let it Be)
      Again, though, a lot of this is subjective. If you prefer the stereo mix, that's perfectly fine! Just remember that, originally, when the Beatles were first issued on CD in 1987/1988, the first 4 albums were ONLY released in mono, as George Martin thought they were the only presentable mixes. And, when the 2009 remasters were made, this Mono box set was meant as a specialty item for collectors. Originally it was to be a limited edition! Clearly, more attention to detail, time, and effort were put into the mono presentation than stereo. (Stereo even had a tiny bit of noise reduction and limiting applied!)
      When the U.S. albums were released in 2014, those CDs included BOTH mono and stereo. And I just prefer mono.

      @@lucalone True about the ping-pong mix. But except for the first album - please please me - which i enjoy in mono as much as in stereo, in the mono mixes the bass in somewhat weaker and each instrument sounds to me less defined. Your affiliate link price is a little bit higher than other new sellers on Amazon. Movie Mars has it for $243 and a little bit higher on Amazon from movie Mars and a little bit less on eBay for movie Mars once again. My concern is not really the price but there's a lot of fakes out there. I noticed you're affiliate link is being fulfilled by amazon. What do you think the chances are of getting a real versus a fake copy. Thank you so much

      I feel that as long as it's sold and fulfilled by Amazon it should not be a counterfeit. I'm not sure about other sellers and I know there's a lot of fakes out there. Also if the price is too good to be true, that usually is a fake as well.

    I feel that mono is very overrated. I feel that I only need mono versions of songs that have vocals only in the right channel

    • @MarkP

      Mreverything11 Mono are the versions of the albums the Beatles themselves wanted their records to sound. Stereo versions were generally given less attention by them until later albums. I hadn't heard these versions of the albums until getting this set and now I actually prefer them to their stereo counterparts.

      You're whats wrong with people in the world today. It's all about whats somethings worth in cash value. Whats the point of having them?!
      The real value is putting your ears around whats on those albums, but you wouldn't understand that.
