We've been testing out the ESAB Rebel 235 for the past few weeks and trying to see if we could "trick" the smart MIG feature. It amazingly surpassed all expectations and handled everything we threw at it.
In this episode, we are going to play around with the weld profile adjustment with .045 wire and see what happens.

Respond to this comment with video requests:
Not a MIG request, but I'd like some tips to reduce start porosity with 7016 rods.
break your glasses in half and weld it back together.
Spray would be a great topic or even better metal core wire in spray and short circuit mode. I'm using Hobart Fabcor 86R metal core and really like it.
I believe we have both coming out soon. Personally, I'm not a fan of metal cored short arc. I like to weld hot and fast with metal cored.
some flux core .045 would be great
I traded in my Lincoln 210MP after a year of frustration for a Rebel 215 based on your review and have been very happy. Thanks for the excellent videos.
What kind of frustration? I've had mine a year and it runs great. Its fantastic for MIG and SMAW. My one complaint is no gas valve for TIG, I always forget to turn on the gas.
I noticed that the more humped up setting the voltage dropped down to 16 volts and the dished fillet it never dropped below 20 volts. Thanks again for the video.
Hey Bob just a little tid bit of info for you, the minimum mixed gas ratio for spray transfer is 80 Arg/ 20 Co2 and it works wonderful with .045.
Good ol arc blow....happens
Great video once again....would love to see the upper limits of this machine on various gases
And in case your wondering my grandpa was like you Bob, he spent many a years welding on hydro electric dams, so he was certified in every type including underwater. And He was a farmer, I don't think I need to say anymore on that. He knew ALOT more than my instructor and taught me what he knew. The instructor had maybe 15 year welding. By the time I took his class I had half as much as him. And he taught me nothing. He didn't always like me because I proved him wrong a lot. JUST A QUICK LITTLE STORY ABOUT MY BEGINNINGS. But again class didn't really prepare me for the real world of welding. Unless I would've been fabricating new projects with new material, but in the field, nothing.
thanks for the video!
I'd like to see info, especially with the .045 mig, a video or info on vertical ot overhead. like how do you come up with general start settings(volts/ipm) for these other position, is there a common calculation to find one or the other setting?
I work for M.T.O we only use 0.45 wire, 11 gauge up to 6 inch plate.
Great video I only run .045 and glad the machine can handle the big spools. Once you get used to how fast you can run .045 and how easily it deals with bad fitups/gaps , hard to use .035
Hey bob i run 0.45 (1mm) wire a lot in my esab rebel 215, and its really really good. i can confirm that it will lay down a very sexy bead on anything from 3/16 to 3/8 plate !!. the only thing i have found is that in SMIG mode it doesn't like starting up in 4T on 3/8 plate... DAMN GOOD machines !!
I thought .045 was similar to 1.2mm wire?
Paul, Yes, .045 is equivalent to 1.2mm
Definitely leaning toward a rebel
Didja buy one?
Outstanding performance
This guy reminds me of a teacher I had making learning more
Nice video! Can you show us some sprey transfer on somting thicker with some of everlast mashiens? Thank you.
I don't have, but I considering to buy one.
I'd like to see this on video :)
Hey can you do spray with .052. I weld with it at the shop. I'd like to see how'd you'd run it and the setting you'd choose. I'm always a student of welding and I'd like to see your input. Hate being a topic hog but man I love welding. Thanks for the videos.
great vid have you ever run select 70 wire in mig
The machine reads your welding style..?? How does it do that? Do other machines override the specific settings you put in? It must be really smart to do all that.
would love to see some thin sheets welded too ,,, .8mm , also does the machine have a metric settings option for those of us that work in mills
Hola.
When I was in welding school, we were all a bunch of country boys,so we were always allowed to bring in projects from home or real applications. Do you do that in your classes? If so, can you so some videos on real applications. That was my biggest frustration in class, because I had been doing "ideal condition" welding since I was 11 or 12, due to my grandpa. The real life applications is where you learn. If I didn't have him, God rest his soul, I wouldn't have had a clue what I was doing in the real world.
Bob, great videos! I am looking ar buying the rebel 215, or 235. I weld automotive sheet metal all the way to 3/8 plate. Maybe in the future 1/2 plate. Should I spring for the 235, or stay with the 215. Thanks for all the videos.
great video Bob
Can this machine be ran in manual mode? Ie. No syergic input.
I want to learn to weld using basic parameters first before relying on the adaptiveness of the machine.
Would it be possible to test a small european brand welder ? Kemppi; portable MIG welder, Miniarcmig 200 Evo...........otherwise great videos, love watching them and learned so much already. Tnx Bob
Good video Bob. Yes I would like to see something on spray transfer. Do you need a special machine todo it? I have a Powermig 210 MP can I pray transfer with it? To me, spray is just turn the power up and do it to it. I use to be a welder but I got sick for awhile and lost track of things. Just got back into it for a hobby. I just love ❤️ love welding.😳😳
Richard Valcourt I don't think your machine would like spray. At 24v and 200a rated output (I looked up its specs)I believe that even with an Ar rich shielding gas mix, you would be right on the edge of a true spray. Factor in 25% duty cycle at that output and you would push that little machine and gun beyond its limits. Spray C10, 27v-510ipm, .035 on my Millermatic 252 works it pretty hard and gets my gun hotter than hell in short order.
I don't really think I would use spray, I believe it's more for production work. I'm an old timer and just welding for the fun of it. I just like to keep current with the new stuff. Last time I welded for a living plasma cutters had just gotten popular, they weighed hundreds of pounds, cost many thousands of dollars and were expensive to operate. I now own a Hypertherm Powermax 30 and I think I'm in heaven using it. Thank you very much for the feedback, appreciate it.👍😀
Is there a TIG video on the 235? Couldn't find it..
Does this model have HF start with a foot pedal?
Linde made good machines; then came Esab. I liked the old Linde with slope adjustment.
Nice Video- Awesome Welding.. Dang your good!
The 235 Rebel (Mig Only) is on sale now for $1495.99 plus a $200.00 mail in rebate.
I hear pll sayin Lincoln vs Esab, what about Miller? 80% of the welding machines we have at the shop are Millers and they work great. I would like to know why nobody talks about Miller.
Can you weld 1.2mm solid wire with this machine?
Good afternoon, Sir!
I've been following your videos with great interest, but I have a novice Question for you.
Of the available methods (gas, arc, MIG, TIG) if you had to use one machine only, which would you pick?
Tough question. There are a lot of good machines that run multi-process.
I'd like to see a demo on the Fabricator 252i vs the Rebel 235
I'd have liked that too,I had a fabricator 252i from esab, I liked it , it had an auto arc feature on it but it was still manual controls so it wasn't synergic type of control, couldn't tell any difference between auto arc or manual but it ran great never a problem.but I only bought it cause for the money the 252 was only couple hundred more with better duty cycle and higher output at 300amps , but I bought it on the day sema show announced the 235 rebel was available, so I was chocked then next year the 285 rebel,so I sold my 252 and a new 9500w continuous generator to the place I bought em and a couple hundred bucks and got the esab rebel 285ic, love it
Will that mig torch fit on a rebel 205acdc?
What is the maximum plate thickness you can set the machine on Smig?
Hey can you do a video using a systematics fw112 with a 300sm 80/ 20 mix gas
Bob, youdeman! Love your video tutorials. I'm in the market for an Esab multi and watching these tutorials have been invaluable for me. Would be interested to know if you personally would consider this and the slightly smaller 215 to be of an 'industrial' standard or just a very good light usage type of deal...? Keep up the great work. Jim (UK).
Is here .045 flux core wire and would the machine run that?
mjbop1 Oh it will run it just fine.
No Mig 0.45
larger wire reduces heat input into the piece for a given weld size
best thing about that welder is that spray master gun lol
Bob who makes your helmet? I like
Very interesting. Thanks
Hello, according to you and your experience, what is the best, most robust and reliable ... Multi-process welder? Thank you very much ! Best Regards 😜👍🏽
Depends on your budget, but if you're comparing the "big three" we like the ESAB. It's the only wone that can weld 6010 worth a crap and it's easy to use.
Can it run some 035 FCAW-GAS ?
At my job I weld on ductile iron pipe nickel with .45 wire every day.
What kind of welding helmet is that your using bob
torcher78 ArcOne Vision
Do u like it
torcher78 Yes sir. If you see a product in the videos, its because we liked it and requested one from the MFR.
didn't you try the Esab SENTINEL A50?
there is nothing in AWS D1.1 that says you need to clean mill scale prior to welding. AWS only makes issue with "coatings" of which hot dip galvanizing is not included nor considered being part of. coatings {i.e. PAINT) when consumed in the weld puddle can cause "under bead hydrogen cracking" per AWS. you can weld over galvanizing and mill scale and it not affect the final weld. mill scale is another form of rust, but a stable, harder form called magnetite. crank that machine up, loose the solid wire, load some .045 outer shield and 75/25 backer gas and let it eat. i can weld 1 1/2' schedule 40 pipe and 3/4' plate with out changing my settings. were you demonstrating the features of the machine for the non welding smoe, or how to weld and can that rig handle a welder(operator)??? i haven't welded in years. I'm an AWS CWI and id like to know its limitations before i purchase a welder for my personal shop at home. ill look further and end up with a lincoln. thanks
Знакомый аппарат.
Yup manual setting pleaseeeee YAS 💯💪🇺🇸👍
Good videos !
How much is it
now iv'e seen this machine i'm thinking of trading in my miller autoset 140 because the 235 has the capable of 110 voltage i have to run my miller on a generator because i dont have 120/25 in my garage its 110/15 amps thnxs for showing the new machine
Good Morning Weld.com,
I was wondering if you'd be willing to show us how to mix gas at home or possible setups that we could do. I know there is some pretty compact gas mixing valves out on the market but I'm curious what have you run across and what you'd find that works well.
Have a wonderful day!
Matt L
Nice vid Bob.
we have a Lincoln s-mig at the shop, it just sits at the back of the shed under a cover. the most useless thing we own...
Because it doesn't perform well or because you don't have a need for it?
Weld.com It has a really unstable Arc when welding throwing spatter all over the place, then when you increase wire speed all you get is a big ugly cold slug of weld. there's no finesse of adjustment, so nobody uses it.

taewachien free uplift bud, buy me a beer or two...
taewachien I'm in Scotland
Thanks Bob!
I recently had to use one for a company who was requiering 3/8" up to 7/8" steel welded. Using 0.045 metal core.. Absolute garbage. I think it was wrong welder for the application. Kept giving 003 error. We parted ways. I expect the build to topple over in public next time it is windy.
Зур экан лекин киммат эканда!
Big spool looks like a big wheel with less wire just saying
Can it tig
Nice Ad.
solamisandwich05 exactly
Some american willing to help a brazilian to leave I am a brazilian parents, I am a welder an excellent professional help me please I want a job in the USA
need to name this the ESAB channel, wtf man. I know for a fact a welder like you does not like a freaking ESAB rebel no where near as much as your putting on... get real man
Jason Sherrod I like all kinds of machines. What's up?
Jason Sherrod eat shit miller fan boy
I'll give you one warning only. Please keep that kind of response off this channel. Either keep it clean or move on. Thanks.
try a thermal arc,or fronius, or a high end Lincoln welder/ feeder you'll put that stupid rebel down lol
Jason Sherrod We have high end Lincoln, Miller. Don't have Fronius.
Bob Moffatt no disrespect to you just seems like commercials for esab alot, your great welder and seems like esab isn't that great
Jason, we've used all the mutli process units and reached out to ESAB because we liked theirs the best. You can't compare. "High end Lincoln or Miller" as it's a totally different price point.
Jason Sherrod well try a high end Esab against those brand
This is a cheep machine
And Lincoln or thermal arc hahaha what a joke
When do you North_Americans (...and I'm saying North_Americans explicitly 'coz Latin Americans know all this since decades...)
learn how to use metric units? Every time some US jerk tells me about 3/16th, I have to pull out a calculator to figure that 3/16 is 4.76mm, which is practically 5mm rounded. 5mm is easy to visualize. 3/16 is not, just as little as 7/32 and much less 15/64.
How can the same Nation that claims to be the greatest on earth keep proclaiming and practicing that same system of measurements that has been abolished by every single nation on the globe except yours? I call that mental inertia.
YES: The US makes great weapon systems. YES: The US has a lot of military might in the world, and YES, they will loose that status to China within the next 15 years. Because of mental inertia (among other diseases).
OttoDeCalumnias you, made my day, just what I have been doing lately with these welding videos, using the calculator all the time, lol
KenpoDisciple yep couldnt have said it better
up yours
Pull out your winky next time you need to visualize 5mm
