  • In 2008 I watched Amadeus and got hyped up to write a Requiem Mass. I wrote it for a string quartet (1 violin, 2 violas, 1 cello), choral octet (doubled SATB), and organ pedal. I had never attempted to compose for anything but guitar and had very little knowledge of orchestration (and of music theory in general). I was a cheeky one and so wrote it in G# minor (without a real notion of the strain that that would put on a string section). I stopped at the Lachrymosa (for obvious reasons), and never fully finished a lot of the choral parts. The Rex Tremendae is basically a skeleton.
Originally composed on a pirated copy of GuitarPro (iirc), this is the first time I've converted the whole thing from MIDI. It's a great example of my older and more flowing style of composition, before I was influenced by the heavily modal and geometric style of Poledouris' "Conan" score. It's much more modern harmonically (I was very into Stravinsky and Ravel), though because I was still green as a composer it betrays a pretty blatant flouting of structural conventions and lack of awareness of the difficulty of many of the passages to perform.
As a side note, the emphasis on the viola was because my friend (now known as the lead singer of the group @midimatilda) was a violist and had lamented the lack of attention that viola parts often got, which I found is a pretty common complaint. Such is life for the supra-bass range.
This is the transcription for piano (which I made for rhythmic and harmonic clarity). The original orchestration is on the way (with a brass section filling in for the choir). The background footage is basically throwaway, as I don't have any original footage that worked, though it turned out pretty nice, I think.

Man this is brilliant and huge, 15:40 mins. You've always had a knack for composing and it's on full display here. Plus the video footage with the music makes me feel like I'm watching from Mozart's pov if he somehow time travelled to the Bay and tried to recall his steps that led him there, hence the backwards walking

Thanks sir. A compliment from such an esteemed contemporary is always an honor! I am waiting with bated breath as well for the epic I80 trek that I hear is in the works!! Some Preludey and modal compositions will accompany it beautifully, methinks (along with a healthy dose of tasty Bigfoot-based riffage!).
