There may be some discrepancy with the timeline, I was lucky enough to see Nicodemus perform live, then run into him 2 more times over the course of a single weekend. This was on his visit to California (or one of his visits there, I get the feeling that was quite rare in his lifetime) He did a DJ set at Albertos Salsa nightclub in downtown Mountain View, California. It was a strange setting to see this legendary figure of Jamaican dancehall. First, it was before nightfall so still sunny out, Albertos only open in 1992, so the venue was a restaurant and still very young. The owner was a pioneer at booking little known world music acts, apparently Marc Anthony played there before fame. This must have been 92 or 93. There was only about 40 people in there and at the bar, It was almost like a private viewing of the best DJ Jamaica ever produced. It was fantastic for me and my friends, but it was probably a little disappointing for him. The next evening Saturday, we headed to a San Francisco club to see Frankie Paul, KRS1 had played unnanounced at the venue the night prior and I was a little dissapointed I missed that, but as I'm sitting on the long wall bench, who sits next to me but Nicodemus himself? Just one of those bizarre syncronicity. I told him how much i liked the show and chatted about some of his works, like with mudies and the little known stuff he did in Canada with Leroy Sibbles. Next day , its Reggae in park, free reggaefest in Golden Gate park, a huge field (Polo grounds) but Nicodemus and his posse picnic just 20 yards from our group. He was there to be audience again. Real strange, but I'll never forget that weekend or the dancehall king Nicodemus, It was October, and the weather was gorgeous and warm for that part of the city. Sad to hear of his passing a few years later. R.I.P.
