Don Reid and the Statler's were and are the best part of Americana PERIOD
Thank you for doing this interview with Mr. Reid. My favorite memory of the Statler Brothers was the first time I saw them in concert in Norman, Oklahoma. They did several of the county hits and the audience clapped and cheered. Then they sang my all time favorite song “How Great Thou Art” and got a standing ovation! They sang some more country songs, clapping and cheering. Another gospel song and another standing ovation! Every time they did a gospel song it was a standing ovation. They were and still are my favorite group. Again, thank you for this interview.
My story is in Staunton in July during Happy Birthday USA. Some guy dropped me at Don's house by chance. There was a small town newspaper in the driveway. I wanted the address lable for my scrapbook.
Instead of just taking it, I walked down the hill to the 7-11, bought a paper, walked back to the house and swapped papers.
I got a souviner and did the right thing at the same time!!
Really miss all the statlers.r I p Harold Reid Lewis DeWitt and ones still here Phillip Balsley Don Reid and Jimmy fortune. Phil and Don the originally members.they are truly the originals.
the Statler brothers are one of the best in the world. there songs touch the heart in so many ways.I listened to them when lived in the USA and now am in croatia 36 years and still listening to them. What joy that have YOU tube to enjoy and yes I put the songs on my FB page so those here can listen to REAL American music. thank you for the memories. wishing you Music joy. Miroslava. Rozman.
I have always loved the statlers and still do. They were always the best and still are
"Life gets complicated, when you get past eighteen," has to be one of the greatest lines in songdom.
On October 21, 1962 at Nineteen I moved from Seattle to South Weymouth, a Navy Base just outside Boston. and stepped straight into The Cuban Missle Crises. Talk about scared and wishing to be a child again.
This was to be the first time I was to understand the importance of being ready to go. There were no guarantees, even at ninteen. War or peace, living or dying came home to me when I grew up, 3500 miles away from where I THOUGHT I had grown up.
I’ve loved the Statler Brothers since their beginning. To this day, I love listening to them. Loved Harold’s humor. Just made their shows that much better. Looking forward to reading Don’s new book, learning about the history of each song. God got an angel with Harold and I’m sure he keeps ppl laughing in heaven just like he did here.
Love the Statler Brothers...one of my favorites growing up
great interview......Don, keep on. Loved listening to you all and i feel for you on the passing of your brother. I lost my oldest brother last year and he was my best friend as well. God Bless!
What a great interview. I just received the book and plan to get it started tomorrow. I can't wait!! The Statlers music has always touched my heart.
they way the Statlers feel about Gene Autry is how I feel about them. I still love you- Don Reid.
This is exactly what I’ve always thought I’d say to Don were I ever to meet him.
Of all the music ,of all the genres my absolute favorite is the Statler Brothers. I have been a fan of theirs for all these years and still am, I watch all the videos I can of theirs on you tube. I have all their albums have seen them in concert and was blessed to have seen them on their final tour. You cannot get any better than The Statler Brothers. I have this book and recommend it highly. It is a must read. Thank you for the interview I loved seeing Don again.
I love the Statlers, and Don is a great writer, just received the Anthology. Their music helped me get thru my own husband's passing this winter, thank you for having this interview with Don.
I'm thrilled about this book and will definitely order it. I wonder which characters are real or compelations of many people. I love the conversational style of Don's lyrics.
Most of my favorites never made the charts. And their harmonies are second to none. I listen to them all the time.
I want to say-- this book takes longer to read, because you read about a song and realize there are things you never noticed... and you have to bring it up on you tube or pull out an LP or CD and listen again. It takes time.
Thank you for a very interesting and informative presentation. I grew up listening to the Statler Brothers and continue to love their music. I was saddened when Harold passed away. I definitely want to check out Don’s books, especially those about their music career.
i just listened to this great song,i'll go to my grave loving you,by the statler brothers, and fell in love with it.ca'nt stop singing it.ca'nt wait to start singing again, when allowed, due to covid, this will be one of my favorite songs to sing.i will be 81 in6 more days, and feel like 29.rarin to go,with daddy-o.the statlers were the best.
I am in the process of reading Don's new book and I love it. I wish he had done one with Harold. He could have told some very good stories about the songs. He seemed to get so much fun out of singing the way he danced at the end of the songs and motioned for applause.
love Don
I will seek out this book. THEY HAD THEIR OWN CHARM AND WIT.
I remember seeing them at the State Fair. I've always loved them!
Not a better writer, lead singer, gentleman, friend, or Christian, than Don Reid. The Statlers were the real deal. Radio sure lost a lot when they retired. We lost a lot of light when Harold was called Home. This book is a treasure. If you don't have "Random Memories", you might want to grab it, too. Just a retired DJ's opinion.
One of my favorite statler songs is The Strand. I forgot the name of the other song but it’s about kids getting awards for baseball etc. THATs it! More like my Daddy Than Me! I never had a chance to see them live. They are, not were,GREAT
i really love more like my daddy than me. I really hope someone would make a karaoke of that song, and maybe even their other songs on youtube.
My favorite group ever
Amen
LOVE this interview! Thank you! Can you please tell me if the new book is more updated or more fleshed-out than the "Random Memories" book? Or, do both books have unique material not discussed in the other book?
Atreasure
Still got a signed picture for my birthday one year.after I saw them in galveston.atreadure.
They have always been by far my favorite group and they always will be. They were always a class act and their chemistry together was incredible. Don Reid had one of the most beautiful male voices I have ever heard. Every time I see Jimmy Fortune I think about how incredibly lucky he was--- actually one of the few people who truly get to live out their longtime dream---- Can you imagine growing up idolizing the Statler Brothers and then not only getting to meet them but touring with them for 20 years.
