SPOILER ALERT In the book, the rules are somewhat consistent though more complex Rule number one: always be afraid, fear makes you alert like a rabbit; use a troll's weight, velocity or anger against them like a matador and a bull; when you strike, you strike fast and fatally like a python Rule number two: there are 3 vulnerable parts on a troll; the heart, the gallbladder and the softies (not the kind of softies you're probably thinking of, the softies are a bulging growth in the side of a troll's neck and is relegated to being a part that kills troll's when you stick it with your sword) the heart and the softies are how you kill a troll and the gallbladder is how you make sure it stays dead, as apparently book troll's can regenerate fully if you leave the gallbladder untouched Rule number three: a troll hunter must name his sword before it draws first blood and the name has to be something meaningful in your life
