Oil paint is not “inefficient” because it takes a while to dry - depending on what you want to achieve with paint, that can be a big advantage! If you want to paint a wall, you may want it to dry fast, but if you are painting a picture you might want the paint to remain malleable for longer, so that you can go back and correct it, blend it, remove parts of it…
This a good video, but it should be noted that what you call "solvent" is actually either a stabilizer or a filler. The binder in the paint is what you smell as it dries or oxidizes... but it was a class project so I understand some research needs to be rushed a bit.
