Technically it is only a felony mail tampering and or theft if USPS if you are FedEx or other package delivery services it's local theft of property and then seems to be determined by local laws usually by items amount.
It’s a crime to open anything delivered by the Post Office not addressed to you. If it was delivered by UPS, FedEx, etc then it’s not a felony unless you keep it and the value exceeds a certain dollar amount.
Yes, but you have to obviously show that the person is opening mail that isn't addressed to you and they haven't made a mistake. It gives them some doubt when the address is similar. Of course, if they carry on doing it and you record the evidence, then it makes you case much better.
@@lemonadewithstrawberries The USPS is a federal governmental agency. So federal and not state laws apply to the mail and parcels they deliver. UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc are all businesses and they only have state level laws applied to their deliveries. US law specifically states that interfering with someone else’s mail is a crime called Obstruction of Correspondence. It’s a pretty serious felony but it’s part of the US Code which pertains to the Postal Service and only the Postal Service. All of the businesses delivering packages don’t have that federal protection.

He's definitely just a yes man for the salon owner. You can tell that because he immediately jumped on it when the lady indicated that she was getting frustrated. People like the salon owner are really good at victimizing themselves and convincing other people to be on their side and defend them through this really horrible kind of manipulation where if you aren't with them you are against them. That isn't how a business works, they likely get 10+ at a time and are often just dropped off in a location if people are busy which is very often. Not sure if the lady is a thief/awful person or not, but packages getting mixed in and accidentally opened would be something i fully expect.
@@trainedloser True if that were the case. But after the first time it happened and the other lady contacted them about it, you'd make sure to change things. Then when she starts stealing the goods, wearing them and then handing them back when challenged, there's no fucking excuse.

Most times, the driver will just drop it off and forge a signature if required. The fedex and ups drivers don't even work for the companies. They are contracted by a third party to avoid liability.
There are exceptions to this rule. if it's accidental its not a crime but I doubt this was accidental. Also if there is malicious attempt with the mail it is a crime. What the business should've done was sealed the package up and put "Wrong Address" or something similar.
Considering the fact that the labels are almost always right next to where you cut the box open, you'd think this wouldnt happen. Maybe if you had to go out of your way to check who it's addressed to i'd understand.
It's not a felony only opening mail delivered by the US postal service has that no open law but packages from non government delivery services doesn't count it's not a felony to open them
Amazon kept delivering my dog food subscription to our neighbors, every time. Each time, I got Amazon to send me a new $75, 50lb bag... after the third time it happened, they gps tagged my house so that they couldn't be delivered wrong again. My neighbors were nice people, but Amazon needed to stop leaving it on the wrong porch.
Yeah, I don't understand why Amazon/the delivery company isn't getting called out here more. They are the ones who are causing the confusion by delivering items incorrectly.
@@kismetcaffet9862 Amazon is awful. I can hardly blame the drivers, what with all I've heard they have to deal with. I live in a condo so we're all used to getting each other's packages but at least they're unopened.
I once opened a neighbor’s package on accident since I was also expecting something about the same size. I was absolutely mortified and embarrassed as hell and immediately went to their place and put it directly into their hands after they opened the door for me. I was bright red and to this day feel so blech about it, even though she was really understanding! I can’t imagine straight up lying and intentionally opening packages regularly, like the invasion of privacy is so real. Also it’s a federal offense!? Some people baffle me.
One of my neighbors accidentally did that to me once. Trust me when I say it was no big deal and the only thing I remember to this day was how mortified they seemed to feel and hope they no longer feel that way. I don't even remember what was in the damn package. 😂
Right same here. I got my neighbors package once. They weren’t home when I knocked. I left a note on their door. They came over and got it when they got home. I didn’t even open it. Because it didn’t have my apartment number or name on it. Wow I didn’t realize that was rocket science I was doing there. Holy cow. I might be a genius. 😦😂
We got a package addressed to the previous owners of our house a month after we moved here and accidentally opened it because we were ordering a lot of stuff for the house at the time. We explained to them when they came to pick it up why we opened it and they were chill, and we made sure to read all packages that came in for the next couple of months in case it happened again. It should only take one mistake to learn.
I lived at the top of an apartment once, and the mailmen, underpayed and overworked and not allowed to stop their trucks for long, would see all the stairs to my apartment and just leave it at unit 1, grou d floor. They were such a nice family, but I was in fhe beginning stages of ny disability and couldn't bring things up, so fhey would have to wait for my partner to get home from work and he would bring them up. I would bake them things in appreciatio. And go out of my way to learn their holidays so I could wish them happy holidays on their significant cultural holidays. Because they were SO nice and never complained even though i was getting a lot of parcels and working from home. I recently got a HUGE and HEAVY parcel at night, that my partner assumed I had ordered and brought it in. We had recently rescued a cat so a huge thing of kitty litter didnt seem out of order. But i had not. So i looked it over and realised that this poor lady lived on the next street over from me and had ordered KITTY LITTER for same day priority delivery. Having recently gotten a cat I knew what that meant: urgent need for kitty litter. So i called the number on the package, found out if she was home, she was, and my partner drove it a street over. Like it was really heavy, and she was ALSO disabled, so he took it up the stairs for her. She was so grateful. I try and pay the energy forward. I once got a parcel for someone who USED to live here and I did some sleuthing and contacted her, and she was so mortified, like she must have had her own address on a shopping account. I told her I would send it to her and she insisted on coming to pick it up. She was so nice and so thankful. I wouldnt mind if someone accidentally opened something of mine, as long as it was a rarity and an accident. Like, it was sweet you felt bad and apologised and made sure not to do it again. Like, that is really all that is needed. I feel like some people just dont pay it forward and dont care about just...trying to be nice and polite.
I know right What if it was someone's medication that they need and the person who opens it just thinks it's like basic paracetamol or stuff for colds and decide to keep it Because for some reason there are people (even fully licensed medical professionals) who believe all medications are the same

It's happened so often we just text the people upstairs and let them know. It literally only took one time of accidentally opening someone else's mail to double check everytime.

Ive made it 2 minutes in but cant the hair salon just tell the delivery driver that that isnt their address? Apartment whatever goes upstairs and no we dont accept it. Problem solved. At my job we get dozens of packages a day and often they are for other buildings on the block. So I go through them while the delivery person is here so they can take them back. It's really not that hard.
There's no excuse for "accidentally" opening a package not for you. Not looking at the name first is A CHOICE. Saying oops doesn't make it not a crime, which is why you HAVE TO CHECK. And since they are clearly actually stealing on purpose the police should have been called instead of trying to reason with them.
My jobs building is a well known spot in our city. Owner also owns all the buildings around it. A daycare rents one of the buildings from us and occasionally packages and food orders get mixed up. The daycare purposely will not inform us if they received something that belongs to us. Many of our employees have personal packages sent to our building so they don’t get stolen. This daycare accepted a massive chick fil a catering order that was for us and after 20 minutes of confusion someone walked over there and the daycare employees and kids were going to town on our food and claimed they thought it was a gift from us. This is a monthly meeting we have - one they are fully aware of. At least once a week someone from my job has to harass the daycare until they play dumb and give up a package. Just recently they tried to steal a $200 chair from my coworker! Those people know exactly what they’re doing. Glad they got called out.
That's something that I would be talking to the owner about. Basically be like look, if you don't get the daycare staff that are renting from you under control, maybe our business will take our rental money to a building manager who will. I'm pretty sure that most business lease agreements have a stipulation that says the tenants will abide by all federal and state laws during their tenancy and will not knowingly commit crimes on the premises.
So let me get this straight, they broke into HER packages, potentially stole something from one of them, and when she went to politely ask them to not do that, THEY got aggressive and physical and then called the cops on HER. What kind of backwards ass wonderland are these weirdos living in?
The name is on the label. It's a crime called Obstruction of Correspondence that equaltes to a felanoy and possible prision time. If you can prove your name is labeled and have it expressly written/recorded that they have no permission to open your packages/mail then you can take them to civil court at the bare minimum or report multiple incidences of this to police and the action you've asked taken so that when theft can be proven the theft will have a stronger consequence than just a fine or return of property given repeated pattern of behaviour. It's a lot of tedious work to do but worthwhile to see they get held accountable for their misdeeds
Ive lived in my house since 2013, i STILL get mail from the bank for the previous owners. Its 2024 and I STILL CHECK THE ADDRESS ON EVERY DAMN LETTER! It is NOT difficult, and it is NOT an impossible task!!

And then when she thinks they sent her the wrong thing, she doesn't return it? She didnt check the package specifically because she realized she didnt order it? Just shrugged and wore it? Alright...
Do you have ANY idea how often my neighbors packages come to my house?! Its odd cause mine never go to hers by mistake but hers ALWAYS come to mine, and ya know what I do?! Bring them to her door, text her that i left it there and if she isnt gonna be home for a bit ill go back and grab it ao it doesnt get stolen and leave it in my front hall for her to grab when she gets home, its REALLY that simple ..like it literally takes 0 effort to be a good person...and at the aame time NOTHING gives you the right to open someone elses packages/mail. Its illegal! What this girl SHOULD DO, is go get a damn PO box. Boom all problems solved! Causr clearly these people are a-holes and you mine as well just save yourself the headache!
Absolutely, spot on! Our neighbours do the same with us, we exchange packages often as well as mail. It’s ridiculous how often the postman and delivery people mess up. We always look before opening.
I dare them to call the police and tell them they're opening her mail and packages. Like, seriously, it's illegal to open someone elses' mail in the US. Doing it on accident the first time, fine, w/e. But to do it as often as it actually did, that's a huge no-no. And yes, if this was happening often, then they should be checking the names on the parcels. Even if it doesn't happen, you need to look at your mail! It's incredibly scummy that the owner has pocketed something from a parcel that she knew wasn't theirs.
5:30 if for some reason you do open mail that isn’t yours, shouldn’t your first thoughts be along the lines of, “I didn’t order this” not “I don’t want this”
I’ve been an office manager for YEARS. They want to steal from her. YOU ALWAYS CHECK THE NAMES. It’s against the legal to open packages not addressed to you. She needs to go to the police with the videos at this point. I have even personally lived above a business and this happened all the time. Not once did anyone open any of my packages.
It’s super not hard to check the name on packages. I’m not sure about the USA, but in Canada is illegal to open someone else’s mail, the salon can get in HUGE trouble
oof that's saying a lot! Spot on, tho! 😹 But it seems like this Laura person would prob take that assimilation as a compliment, being a Casey Anthony stan and all ... 🫢 😅
6:58 Um, yeah, yeah I do. Regardless of if they're receiving parcels for someone else, you should ALWAYS check the name to make sure it's for you. The people questioning this are clearly not aware that opening someone else's mail is a federal felony.
In Australia, it’s illegal to open anyone else’s mail (or package). I wonder if the same applies in the US. If yes, Michaela should be able to get the police involved and charge Laura next time it happens. Especially if Laura / the salon has CCTV.
Yep it's illegal here in the US. It's a felony to do so and you DO NOT want a felony record in the US. You'll get side eyed for life when working with pretty much everyone from banks to jobs to getting a house.
My work’s upstairs neighbors packages come to us all the time. I usually just redirect the post person. Idk why it’s such an issue. Even if we don’t catch it like okay they’ll come down for it
Even when I have lived alone I have checked the names on parcels/mail.. like it’s pretty common for packages to get mixed up, I think it’s weird to open something before knowing it’s yours lol
I lived above a flower shop for years, never had this issue! They always put my packages on my staircase and called it a day. Why can they not do the same? Takes a second and is not rocket science. If she lives upstairs, I’m assuming she has a staircase and if it is not easily accessible to them they should leave her packages outside and it is what it is. Also why can’t peoples read??? IF IT DOESNT HAVE YOUR NAME DONT OPEN IT

My name is Michelle. I am neigbors to a Michael on the same floor of my apt. I've only accidentally opened once and when i realized mid opening it wasn't mine i felt so freaking bad. Like thankfully it was nothing embarrassing but I made a pointto triple check my packages afterwards.
The thing is, especially in a salon scenerio where there are multiple stylists getting their own personal products delivered to the store and merch being sent to the store itself, they're definitely checking the names on the packages.
I live in an apartment building, I check every package before I bring it up to my apartment. I check the ones left at my door as well. It's really simple to double check things
I get that at a business, sometimes the drivers just drop off and dip. You can't have the opportunity to "refuse" the delivery. However, you can then take the package and set it outside on the curb with a photograph. Then, have a discussion with your delivery people explaining that there's been several incorrect deliveries and they need to be checking the packages prior to dropping off. Or, request that all drop offs must have a signature before release of delivery. Then, if incorrect packages come you can direct the driver to the correct recipient.
"you expect people to read the names on every parcel" YES? and even if the answer for some absolutely stunned reason the answer is no, there are still consequences to being too dumb to bother and people can be rightfully mad at you. i don't understand why ignorance would absolve a person of consequences, people don't want to take responsibility for anything
I live in a home on a quiet street. I rarely get someone else's package, but it has happened a couple of times with my neighbor and i getting each other's things. However, even as rare as it happens, i always check the names on each piece of mail and every package. It is ILLEGAL to open someone else's mail. Even if it's delivered to you!
I’ve opened mail that wasn’t mine 2-3 times in the last 5 years of living here because companies refuse to accept the guy doesn’t live there. Know what I started doing? Reading. The. Name. I’ve also got mail for people around the corner because the mailman can’t read street addresses apparently. Also the companies, all except one, gave up when I started mailing them back rocks with the letters or I would hoard their letters and then send them all back at once.
I would accidentally take pictures of every opened package. Then I’d accidentally call the Post Master. Then wait until she’s accidentally fined & or arrested. The video she took is evidence too.
It's simple. When the mail comes again, you put "wrong address/return to sender" and mail it back out. That "what do you want me to do" is insane. You do what you want someone to do for you. And I still check the name on any mail at my private home. It's just a habit.
I live in a household of four people and we each order from Amazon quite a bit. I’ve never opened a package without checking the label first unless it was handed to me by another household member saying it was mine. I feel like if you mistakenly open a package once without checking and it turns out it isn’t something you ordered, that should teach you to read the label from then on. Once is a mistake, twice is ignorance, and three times is an intention, at least that’s how it’s likely going to be perceived.
Opening another persons mail is a federal crime. Itd be so funny to have someone mail her something that looks like a really nice package but have just a letter on tbe inside stating the laws surrounding this and the intent to now press charges if its opened by anyone besides the stated owner.
Aren't the delivery people asking for your name before handing the package over?? Like, "i have a package for Laura"? If you receive a package to a name that no one in your shop is called, why the f would you accept it? Also, it's not holding the package for someone if you're opening the package and not informing the legitimate owner
i legit work at a salon with apartments that have the exact address as ours. i always read the name and address of all packages and we get a good amount. you are never too busy to read a few words.
You can tell the delivery service whether ups usps or FedEx you can deny the package and they take it back to the distribution center it’s not that difficult. If it doesn’t have your name on it don’t open it it’s just that simple
I had problems with my sister opening my packages because we lived in the same house and she didn't bother to read labels, and I was so mad when she ruined one of her Christmas gifts by opening it, that I ordered a bunch of adult toys, knowing she'd be horrified to open them. She reads all package labels from now on. I'd probably start doing the same to this lady, since it seems like she opens them in front of staff and customers.
Oh my goodness that Aaron guy needs to take a chill pill *SO* badly 😵💫 Laura needs one as well!! The talking over people and incredibly aggressive behavior is WILD!
If it’s USPS I hope this woman goes up to them and tell them what is going on. Tell them you want to see the Postmaster. Or if tie UPS or FedEx go to them. Now with Amazon I am not sure. You would probably have to talk to someone online and not sure how helpful they would be.
This salon should realize by now that there are residents that live above them and should recognize when they accidentally received mail for them, plus that mail theft is a felony. Also for reference, this salon is located in a "better" part of Baltimore.
It's just like having roommates. Anyone who has had roommates knows > It's not crazy to read the name for each delivery. Exactly. Like literally just check the name on the box before opening them, it's not that hard.
Technically it is only a felony mail tampering and or theft if USPS if you are FedEx or other package delivery services it's local theft of property and then seems to be determined by local laws usually by items amount.
@@Lostboy811opening mail that isn’t yours is a federal offense im pretty sure
She should absolutely file a police report.
Mail theft is actually a federal offense and they will through you in prison for it.
In the US, it is a felony to open mail that is not yours. It is called “obstruction of correspondence”.
It’s a crime to open anything delivered by the Post Office not addressed to you. If it was delivered by UPS, FedEx, etc then it’s not a felony unless you keep it and the value exceeds a certain dollar amount.
@randomletters9628 where'd you hear that? genuinely asking

How's that going to help when the fucktards who accpet the package in the salon are taking it?
That isn't how a business works, they likely get 10+ at a time and are often just dropped off in a location if people are busy which is very often. Not sure if the lady is a thief/awful person or not, but packages getting mixed in and accidentally opened would be something i fully expect.
@@trainedloserEven if you have 20+ packages, you have to open them one at a time. Take 2 seconds to look at the name. This is completely reasonable

YES LOOK AT THE PACKAGE BEFORE YOU OPEN IT, DONT COMMIT FELONIES
I was about to say this. Opening other peoples mail is a literal felony in the U.S.
Imagine calling the cops because you commited a felony and someone points it out
It's not a felony only opening mail delivered by the US postal service has that no open law but packages from non government delivery services doesn't count it's not a felony to open them
Amazon kept delivering my dog food subscription to our neighbors, every time. I once opened a neighbor’s package on accident since I was also expecting something about the same size. I was bright red and to this day feel so blech about it, even though she was really understanding! I can’t imagine straight up lying and intentionally opening packages regularly, like the invasion of privacy is so real. Also it’s a federal offense!? Some people baffle me.
I accidentally opened a package of my roommates once for the same reason. I apologized and felt really really bad. He understood.
So people are just out here opening any package that comes to their address without reading the information on it first? Whew 😂
I know right
What if it was someone's medication that they need and the person who opens it just thinks it's like basic paracetamol or stuff for colds and decide to keep it

Under federal law, illegally interfering with someone else's mail is considered a felony. An obstruction of correspondence charge carries heavy penalties, including fines and prison time.
As a hair salon that's underneath apartments, we used to have tons of packages all the time and we would never open one without checking the name. It's not that hard or takes a lot of time
I live in an apartment and I always make sure my name is on the envelope or parcel before opening it, it’s common sense.
I’ve had to put my neighbours mail in their box after it was accidentally put in mine, or sometimes I bring the packages to their door if we are on the same floor as it is sometimes left in the lobby.
Unfortunately common sense isn't always common. It sounds like you are a good neighbor, if only the Salon took advice from you!
You're the kind of neighbor everyone should have, but not everyone deserves. ❤

if you have more than one person in a business, you check the name on all mail.
Oh I would have sent them a bill for the food. With interest. That’s just crappy.

Absolutely, spot on! Our neighbours do the same with us, we exchange packages often as well as mail. It’s ridiculous how often the postman and delivery people mess up. We always look before opening.
I mean, she shouldn't have to pay out of pocket because they refused to grow up. That's not fair to her, and PO Boxes aren't free.

I'm sorry but if I WASN’T stealing people's packages, this wouldn't be my response 😅
It’s super not hard to check the name on packages. I’m not sure about the USA, but in Canada is illegal to open someone else’s mail, the salon can get in HUGE trouble

It's a federal offense report them ASAP so they can be brought up on charges
i can’t believe drama from my hometown made it to the markie channel :,) as a hairstylist in this city can confirm this salon owner has had an insane reputation for YEARS
In the USA it's a Federal offense to open other people's mail. End of story. She needs to go to the Postal Service and report them.
They say that the devil works hard but markie works harder.
Isn't it a legitimate crime to open up mail that doesn't belong to you?
I’m sorry wait….. who doesn’t check the name on every package they receive??!!?
“do you expect them to read the name on every parcel they receive?” ………………. literally yes???? LOL
Right?? We get mismarked mail maybe twice a year, we still check all of our mail before opening it. If it's not ours we deal with it
You can tell the delivery service whether ups usps or FedEx you can deny the package and they take it back to the distribution center it’s not that difficult.
Why has no one called the cops on the person who is opening mail that isn't theirs? Its a crime to do that.
I feel like you would know if something wasnt yours. It feels a little sus to assume it is yours
Every time a package comes, i always read the name on the lable first!
And then i swallow.
It's just like having roommates. Anyone who has had roommates knows
> It's not crazy to read the name for each delivery. Seriously, it's not hard to do.
> It takes approximately 3 seconds.
> It's literally just a respectful thing to do as you are sharing a building.
> If you don't want the other people to open your boxes, then common sense would suggest you do the same.
I had a roommate that I shared a first name with for 10 years and we never opened each other’s mail. It’s really not hard to read…
“what do you want us to do, check the name on every package?” it is literally illegal to open other peoples mail in the US
It's always so surreal seeing local drama on UA-cam like this! LOL
Bruh, id call the cops if someone kept opening my parcels
You should always look at the address of any mail before you open it.
she can literally go to the police, opening other peoples mail without permission is a felony
That’s a white claw in her hand she’s not sober- liquor store employee
It's not a liquor store, though?
@@dangerxbadger2300 I think they're saying that they work in a liquor store
6:49 yeah, obviously! Where I live, it is a felon to open mail addressed to someone else. I even check the mail and packages which end up in MY mailbox bc sometimes errors can happen - bc we are all human - and an item is actually addressed to someone else.
I’ve lived over a shop, well shops actually and stuff would be delivered wrongly…to me for them and to them for me.
Simple answer is you check…not hard.
The easiest way for the salon to deal with it is when packages arrive and they're not addressed to the salon RTS and send it back.
