Yes! He epitomizes what a lot of the "die hard true race fans" call a "real down-to-earth" regular guy. I remember watching him in his various Indy cars in the 1970's. It was a man who tried but, didn't have the best of "breaks" in getting literally top class stuff. A "racer on a budget shoe string"... but knew and loved the old dependable Offenhauser engine.
Ole John Martin and the Seafood Shrimp Cocktail Special. Oh yeah! In 73 he had a one year old McLaren that went pretty darn quick. In 76 he practically built his own Bob Riley Grant King replica of Foyt's Coyote. I'd love to stop by and pick his brain about old Offy's.
Phil Krueger would be a good subject for a "Tough Guy" spot. Took him 6 tries to make the 500 field and when he did in 1986 - he was the only driver who made the field in a 1985 car. Phil was also usually his own chief mechanic and he put a 2 year old March in the field in 1988 (that he prepared) and he finished 8th in it.
Robin, I have someone that I can say first hand was a racing tough guy ; my uncle, Paul Russo. You should do a video on his career. 14 Indianapolis 500 starts, fastest qualifier in 1957, member of the 100 mph club, good friend on Tony B. Sr., younger brother of Joe Russo...
A hardcore racer Robin ! You're correct, not many guys under about 60 remember him, and to be honest, he had slipped my mind ! Is John still building Offys actively ?
Martin's story was super special. Heck of a nice guy and a true hot rodder!
You’re looking good Robin. Keep fighting brother!
