Why did I buy a Millermatic 211?

  • I started my welding journey wanting to learn how to TIG weld. This video covers a little bit of why I just bought a MIG welder when I already have a TIG welder. Miller welders.
    I picked up:
    - Millermatic 211 (new style) - I highly recommend supporting your local welding shop, but if you can't get there, then here is an Amazon link:
    www.amazon.com...
    - Miller Spoolmate 100
    - Miller 15ft MIG gun
    - Miller consumable kit.
    You will see in the video that I very happy with my purchase! After just a few months of use, I love this machine. I am basically a DIY/garage type welder. I want to eventually start modding up Jon boats. (I have always been interesting in welding, but this is what started it all.)

    I've been using the 211 for about 6 years......first one with a transformer burned the board after about a year of use......didnt have time to have it repaired so I bought a new one......it was ok for a while but after about a year I have to turn the heat up to the highest setting as if I'm welding (3/8") when I'm only welding 1/8 wall and I've had other problems with it ......from now one I go with Lincoln........ive had nothing but problems with Miller

    Cool, I'd love to grab a Miller machine down the track when our Aussie Dollar gets better, she's a tad sick at the moment. I just bought an Australian brand 250 amp machine, it's a Bossweld MST X250, latest tech, can't wait to get it. Newest tech here in aus, I'll be migging everything I can soon. I think the Millers are so cool, so many features and so many videos on UA-cam with people using them, just feel like being a part of the big Miller Club LOL. I'll be starting on Aluminium welding first, Mig and I want to learn Tig later on down the track for sure. My machine can tig but it's DC, so I won't be able to Tig Aluminium ofcourse. Happy welding bud, nice machine.

      Do not do it. Production of these machines has gone down hill so much. I worked at the plant in appleton and SO MANY machines come back with issues. People putting them together with no training at all, and they send out broken or incomplete machines to meet quotas. Quantityover quality is their slogan. Miller is trash now.

    You get the 215, and the TIG kit with it, and then you could sell the Tig you have, and reduce the footprint of your welder space while keeping the same capabilities, plus the 215 is as fine a machine as Miller has made yet!
    Was a smart move getting that 15' gun right off the bat though, and selling the shorter one to help pay for some of it all too. Agree with a couple other comments that you only run 120v if your out and about and have to, on 240v the welder performs as it should. Lastly, Miller is still the best, have used most of them out there, and still run to my Miller when I need the right weld.

    Hey, great vid on the 211, so many of us are in the same situation with small g-rages and learning, learning, learning. It would be good to hear more about your learning curve going from the tig to the mig for your projects. Perhaps a vid on the spool gun too when you get there. I have been looking at the 211.

    Yea the 10' mig gun that comes with it is ok for bench work but way too short. For other stuff you have too move the welder a lot

    • @chrisjones6165
      @chrisjones6165 6 років тому

      Mark Benoit 10ft is a joke for fab projects. Hell even my tig is 25ft so why would I want a 10ft mig.. that don't even wrap around my table. Think I'd almost use spoolmate 150 for the 20ft cord. I do mainly custom fab projects and 10ft is almost un useable for me. Big negative on the welder needing a new 250$ gun to make useable

    I bought the same welder and am totally brand new at welding. Do yo you find, based on your experience and knowledge of welding, that the "Auto Set" feature seems to be spot on for working? Does it seem to set it at the proper voltage and wire feed speed for the preset features based on steel thickness, wire gauge, and gas used?

    • @KMLTimesTwo
      @KMLTimesTwo  8 років тому

      +choprpilot76 I purposely tried to learn the manual settings and not the autoset. Basically because I didn't want to look like a newbie. Lol. Silly really. Anyway, I have tried to use it some lately and it seems to be a little on the fast side for the wire speed. This could be that I have learned to travel too slow. How did you find it to work?

    • @choprpilot76
      @choprpilot76 8 років тому

      +KMLTimesTwo Well again I am so new and untrained in welding that I wouldn't know what to compare my experiences with the 211 to so far. But it's interesting to hear you say that you think the wire feed may be to fast in the auto-set mode, because I was thinking the same thing. I love the welder, but I am learning to dial down the speed by just going to the manual settings per the large chart settings on the panel. I dial it down slightly lower and it seems to help, but like you I admit that maybe I'm just going to slow, because as I stated I don't have any experience to base it off of. Thanks.

    • @KMLTimesTwo
      @KMLTimesTwo  8 років тому

      Another thought as since I started with TIG first, the welds are typically "smaller" or lower profile. The welds I have been getting with the MIG are higher profile and maybe it is my comparison with the TIG that is throwing me off. I watched a bunch of guys on UA-cam that are not the experts, but decent enough and they have simliar welds. They always grind them off.

      In December of 2015, it was $1095 list price. It came with a free miller helmet and also I rebate I think. $100?? (Whatever it was, I say it in the video.) I bought a spoolgun as well, ($246) but haven't used it yet.

    I have the transformer 211. I like it and it has it's place. But for 1/8th and over I like to bust out the stick machine. Save the electric glue gun and reserve the gas for lighter and delicate projects.

    #1) Inverters will eventually go out on you after years of use..
    #2) transformer models will.outlive you and me both..
    #3) I like that this Machine only cost you 1,000$(apx).
    #4) it can handle some pretty sizable jobs .. art projects... Small welding projects. Etc..
    Medium sized projects and even good for getting started in welding business on your own.

  • @Imwright720

    Mig is misleading in its ease of use. It’s like a hot glue gun for metal. The problem is if it’s done wrong it will fail under use. A weld can look terrible and be strong or look good and be weak.

      I started with stick. Back when I learned, you were supposed to learn oxy-acetylene first. Back them that made sense. Most MIG machines were expensive, and a lot of smaller shops only had stick welders or a torch set. Today small Mig Welders are common enough that if a shop only has one welder, it's probably Mig.

      Mine has been 100% flawless since day 1. I am a simple novice, but unless you are rolling that thing around in the dirt it should not have died that soon. Seems like there is another issue there. What happened. Did they repair it? All that said, your comments make we want to cover mine when not in use. My shop is fairly clean, but there is certainly dust, etc that settles in the machine.
