  • On this very personal episode of Heath Theory, Tom Bilyeu interviews the co-founder of Impact Theory (and his wife), Lisa Bilyeu. For years Lisa has suffered from catastrophic dysbiosis, and her battle with illness is actually the inspiration for Health Theory.
Now that her health is manageable, she is sharing the most important lessons she has learned. In this episode, she explains why she needed to take total ownership of her health, how she dealt with shame and fear, why she has learned to use controlled experiments, and why it is so important to challenge accepted beliefs on health.
    SHOW NOTES:
Lisa and Tom discuss how and when her health issues began [1:37]
Lisa shares her story of how her eating problems developed [3:31]
Lisa explains the emotional distress and shame behind her sickness [6:22]
Lisa talks about the fear of appearing weak that accompanied her chronic illness [9:51]
Lisa explains how she got over the desire to hide her illness [12:46]
Lisa and Tom discuss the first few times they sought help [15:56]
Lisa and Tom talk about how important it was for her to take ownership [23:32]
Lisa explains why taking ownership allowed her to figure out how to heal herself [26:43]
Tom and Lisa talk about how different people have wildly different triggers [33:01]
Lisa discusses what she is going to try to do next [37:17]
Lisa and Tom talk about trying the carnivore diet and other experiments [40:01]

Both Tom and Lisa are filthy rich, they don't need to create these amazing inspirational videos; but they do. This is a short message to say Thank You, Tom and Lisa. @b1rdkeeper S Very well written and thought out; but I have to disagree with you. Yes, Tom is trying to build a massive studio and gain connections within the relevant circles; but why go about it in this way? You say that he's a billionaire, fine: then why not simply produce his own movies, and reel in powerful industry execs? A billionaire can blow 40mil (which is a fairly handsome budget) on a film, cast a couple of A list stars and partner up with renowned studio execs on the next one; which he may also fund - there, he's on his way to building his own massive studio. He's gaining valuable experience and valuable connections. But Tom and his wife are going a different route. They're reeling in selected group of people (dieticians/authors/motivational speakers/financial experts etc) to dish out wisdom and knowledge. Perhaps Tom's content hasn't been useful to you, but it certainly has been for me; and I'm appreciative of it. Of course Tom has an agenda to connect with film industry execs, and garner respect/power as a film exec; I'm not naive to people aspirations - but it doesn't negate the fact that his content is ultra valuable, to audiences all over the world, and we should applaud his efforts.

b1rdkeeper S I find your version much more likely. I also think that they're just a couple of superficial people trying to be relevant and to seem altruistic, but it's really ALL about them. (I hear the word narcissist echoing in my head). They did not offer ANY real solutions here. But wait, they may soon bring out their own probiotic line.

Tom and lisa, Thank you so much for this video! A year ago i suffered massive dysbiosis from a doctor prescribing me too many antibiotics, I almost lost my life as my body stopped absorbing nutrients.. i lost function of my legs and other basic functions of my body. i went through exactly what lisa went through, almost identical symptoms and reactions to all sorts of food... I am still going through it and i am sure we are going to get through this... thank you for bringing awareness to all of this.. as many people still believe "It's all in your head" when in fact IT IS NOT.
Again thank you so much for this... and continue spreading wisdom all over the world!

Drinking a friend's homemade, raw milk kefir with an aggressive strain of candida was my threshold event. Before that, I'd managed bacterial overgrowth with difficulty, but still maintained a quality of life. After the candida came in on top of that, I spent some time really thinking I would die, or even worse I thought maybe continue to live weakly with daily diarrhea -- and severe insomnia because it would even keep me awake. I've recently gone keto and am doing significantly better, but not well yet.
As someone dealing with that in addition to poverty and the limited resources that brings, it is good to know there are public figures I can follow who will be letting the world know about anything helpful they find.
Thank you, Tom, Lisa, and the whole Impact Team! You're making the world a better place!

I'm going through something similar right now-Lisa's openness and Tom's support and admiration for her efforts are really refreshing to see. Often I feel kind of alone and misunderstood (haven't 'figured out' a basic thing most humans can do without any effort ie digest properly) and it's quite energy intensive. It definitely affects all facets of my life and identity as well, and being strong in the face of it should be admirable, not shameful (telling myself that as much as others :)

Lisa and Tom, I also had/have SIBO and am so glad to see people such as yourselves bringing light to it. When I finally found my Functional Medicine doctor just over 3 years ago I told her I thought I was going to exhale and never breathe again because the chronic fatigue with no apparent cause was consuming me - I was scared. My digestive issues were not as apparent as the fatigue and mental strain. I started to stutter at 30 years old, forget my words, my memory was shortening, I was doing everything possible not to fall asleep while driving, I felt like I was an 80 year old living in a 20-30 something body and my Functional Doc found my hormones were matching that statement. Not to mention I have a degree in Fitness and have always been a very health conscious person - I eventually stopped working out, I was too exhausted and the activity made the fatigue symptoms worse. I have more brain issues with my SIBO. HOWEVER, I never stopped trying, searching and surrounding myself with people who had different ideas for healing and I first heard about gut health in 2013 when I read Alexander Jungers book, “Clean”. I started there. It helped but didn’t last because I needed data, objective information about myself and an individualized path. I must say that with the help of my Functional Medicine doctor I graduated Nursing school this past May. Through the healing work of my doctor, my own consistency and perseverance with the protocols, and the work Lisa and Tom have posted, I got the exact job I wanted right out of school and my memory...I can’t believe how it’s healed. Nursing school is grueling, it’s more grueling with chronic fatigue and memory issues. It’s my second degree and 5x harder than my first. I could not have persevered if it were not for my doctor and all the mindset work I engaged in. Love to you both for your messages, thank you so much for being an important part of my path🙏🏼. I hope your work reaches the masses and people are aware that health isn’t as simple of a concept as it is often delivered.

M R So what was the outcome of your SIBO and health? Are you cured now?

    • @MR-dq4bq
      @MR-dq4bq 4 роки тому

Jennifer Lebron I don’t know if cure is the right word. I’d say I manage it by my consistent lifestyle. Stress and food triggers are two big factors. I did a SIBO Protocol with SIBO/SCD diet and botanical type antibiotics in 2017. From there, everything started to get better. No more bloating, no GERD, and the brain - wow, so much better, etc. However, I just started my first nursing job and the stress is quite incredible so I think I’ve had my first set back with bloating, heart burn and fatigue. I do intermittent fasting consistently for the past year and have been paleo since 2015 but will go into Keto for a few months at a time. Keto helps a ton. Carbs and stress are my two culprits. I’ve experimented with longer fasts, 2-3 days, which can be questionable for women because of our hormones but I always come out feeling so much better. So I just did a 24 hour fast a couple days ago and it has helped. I would not say I’m “cured” but I have lived most of my life the last two years with minimal to no symptoms even with the stress of nursing school. I’m also very consistent. Lisa is talking about adding foods back in. I tried that with dairy this summer and it was a disaster so I’m not there yet. I can add rice and oats in at random with minimal effects but if it’s too often, over a week, I decline. I live my life regularly without trigger foods and on occasion, I can enjoy them with minimal consequence. I would not pop into a McDonalds and have a meal. That would likely be a disaster at this point due to all the variables in that meal but at holiday parties I can choose to eat rice or beans or other one ingredient items and it’s OK. I guess I indulge one ingredient at a time until I know how I’ll respond. The cure for SIBO is a long and winding road. It takes time, financial commitment and dedication to reach each destination. Everyone has a different course too. I’d also like to add that family support is a large factor. My husband is incredibly supportive and that makes the stress of it all much more tolerable. And like Lisa, I take full ownership of my process and my husband supports the changes we need to make. Thank you for asking, I hope others learn from this. 🙏🏼

Amazing and thank you Tom for this interview. It's awesome that you took Lisa's health so seriously once you knew about it. You took control but had the courage to tell her that she must take responsibility for her own health first. You tried to hold it together during this interview; I applaud your beautiful strength and character. This is such an empowering interview because we get to hear from both sides and so much information was packed in it. The message is so beautiful because people need to know that they must be the first to take responsibility for their health and if so fortunate to have a supportive system who as your back. For me personally, I took responsibility for my own health; have always. The unfortunate part and being married, I did not have the support from my spouse or family. I was and continue to be strong for myself. I could not stop watching this because I felt this message was for me; it gave me comfort to know that there are good people out there like you and Lisa.

Unprocessed or undigested trauma creates block in your cells and body, these blocks stop the flow of energy, when energy doesn’t flow, it leads to sickness, illness, atrophy, and the longer these trauma’s aren’t met with acceptance, love, and forgiveness, the worst the health of your body will become. I’m 24 dealing with way too many health issues, yes I am healing, but it all goes back to this devastating trauma out of absolute nowhere, and it only gets worst... Allow yourself to feel the emotions of an event and let the cycle complete itself. I changed my diet, began exercising, drank more aqua, started a meditation practice, and it helps... but it does not get rid of the root problem,

I can't tell you how grateful I am for your journey. I think it was the interview with Navin Jaine that promted me to do obsessive research to figure this gut hoopla out. Each clue you've revealed on women of impact I have tired, and normally saw improvement. Still healing, but thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This episode, like quite a few before, is one i didn't even know i was waiting for til i saw it. I actually DMd Lisa about how to figure out health stuff while life isn't waiting up for us.
With all she's experienced and conquered, I'm really stoked to pick up on her wisdom.
definitely watching this by the end of the day. :D

Thank you for this episode! You are so lucky to have found each other and build such an empowering relationship. I feel you Lisa, I’m also going through a health disconnect and can relate to everything you are going through. I’m the stage where I have taken responsibility and ownership of situation - and it’s not an easy thing to do but slowly seeing the benefits. I think it would be a wonderful if you can do a part 2 on the psychological effects this has had on you, as I think that’s A HUGE component that cannot go unseen. Bravo Koukla !

Your relationship is so beautiful...Lisa you're so blessed, it helps a lot having that support. It is so draining to do all the search while doing all the changes in your life and working on mindset. It makes me feel alone when I have to just get on and do everything without that support.
I do feel for you both, I have a chronic illness and most of the times I find myself just hiding everything from everyone including my partner. I don't like feeling vulnerable and showing my vulnerabilities.
This interview is so inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thank you for sharing this. I had a bacterial infection in my stomach and small intestine when I was 21 that forced me to take a leave of absence from school. I was then given a lot of antibiotics and while it killed the infection, it killed a lot of the good bacteria too and it took me a long time to really recover. I felt terrible for a long time and was also afraid to go out, worried about what I could eat/not eat, pain, and my emotions were all over the place (I got to the point of panic attacks), etc. It really forced me to reconsider my life so I do feel like it's one of the best things that ever happened to me. It's the thing that made me start taking my health seriously and designing my life with intention. I'm fine now and I can honestly say I live a life by design, but ten years later and I STILL sometimes feel lingering anxiety around my stomach.

What I learned from this video and my experence was ; 1. Take 100 percent responsibility of the problem. 2. Document what you're doing and make small changes. My wife gave up and died this year. The last 5 years she said " the doctors know what they are doing". You need to learn how to ask the right questions . You must be strong . Even if you lose, you may be able to help others. I now think of doctors as a starting point, not the only answer.

    Lessons Learnt From Lisa Bilyeu:
1-Eat a healthy, and balanced diet which is low in fried foods and sweets
2- we should Exercise regularly or remain active by doing household or garden work etc.
3-Sleeping well for at least 6 hours a night is necessary.
4- Avoid stress by adjusting ourselves. So, Yoga and meditation can help in relieving stress and tension.
5- improve nature and behavior. Become kind and generous.
6- besides all this one should go for some regular pathology test to understand health condition and then to act accordingly.

He had Dr. Steven Grundy on twice. I believe he is a vegetarian based physician. He didn’t challenge Keto but if I recall, Dr. Grundy removes grains and lectins which is also a big part of the Keto diet. Keto isn’t meat based. Vegetarian Keto has a lot of options. There is a book out there called Ketotarian by Will Cole, D.C. that I’ve followed. Vegan Keto is harder but not impossible. The book has those options as well.

Very similar story-I won’t go through all the details but very sick very many years. Saw many many doctors at one of the top medical centers. Had procedures, surgeries, and on multiple meds. I finally started researching what to do myself and also found the ketogenic way of eating and thought, what the hell? Finally now totally better off all meds (10) and doctors are amazed. My life is totally changed.

Psychotic, obsessed, haha, yup! This is incredible, I could write a book about the synchronicity involved with finding Tom's channel a few days ago which has me on this video today, but I'll keep it short. Lisa when you talk, I feel it could be me talking, from the health issues, to the impact goals and empowerment message. I've mostly dealt with low income doctors which has been demoralizing at times, but I never gave up. We know ourselves better than the doctors, taking ownership and self education is absolutely necessary and the only way to progress, you have to try everything. Congratulations on finding a good doctor, sometimes that seems like an impossible mission. I had to work a lifetime to find a way to love myself, which finally happened 3 years ago. After so much wasted time hating myself, I suddenly saw my strength and realized what a hell of a warrior and survivor I was. That is what I see in you, thank you for what you are doing, it's so important for women to see that you can be a badass while dealing with chronic issues. Too often it makes us feel weak when the reality is that we are strong AF. This is an older video so there is probably no chance this comment will be read, but in case it can help anyone, oregano oil is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic, it's nothing short of amazing, reduces pain and inflammation and kills infections, fast. We are currently using it in the fight against coronavirus. I killed parasites with diatomaceous earth, bentonite clay and activated charcoal, the die off was brutal but man was it an accomplishment to get those things out of my body! I've been wanting to start my own channel for years and I think this is just the push I needed!
