  • New Descript Feature: Center Active Speaker
In this video, I'll demonstrate a new feature in Descript - the 'Center Active Speaker'. I'll show you how to use this feature to automatically center your speaker in portrait or landscape video formats. I walk you through the process, from accessing the feature under visual effects to applying and testing it. You'll see how useful this is for creating social media clips or editing interviews by keeping the speaker centered without manual cropping.

Nice work. Does the active speaker only works with 2 video sources? a traditional zoom meeting would not work?

You're right, it can only switch between separate video streams. It can't do it with Zoom recordings which are one file for everyone.

interesting. i thought this was more of a locked on stabilization feature. Maybe future updates. If it will track on during like a stage presentation how fantastic would that be?!

I think it analyzes the entire video and identifies where the face is.
Then, as scenes are created with that video showing (say, Active speaker), it will use that data to center the face in that scene.
But it doesn't seem to MOVE the video to keep the face dead-center like other face tracking plugins do.

I noticed that you continue to use your green screen.
I have a black backdrop but also have a green screen that I could put up. With all of the new background swap features, is there a great benefit to having a true green screen?

I still prefer the green screen with chroma key removal over AI background removal. The AI one is often inaccurate (it will remove the microphone in front of me, leaving a big hole right in the middle of my body), and it's also blurry around the edges. It has no 'controls' to allow tweaking. So unless you have nothing in front of you, and you have good contrast between yourself and your background, and your hair is not fluffy, and other 'stars' align, the green screen is still your best bet.
