    Engineer here with reasonable 2D CAD experience. Just starting 3D CAD and it has been quite the learning curve. Most of the tutorials I have seen neglect to show you how to go from your extrusion back to a sketch, and how to use the section analysis tool. While these are pretty basic concepts it is extremely frustrating trying to draw parts with out these tools. Great video and keep up the good work. With any luck this will become one of the "go-to" beginner Fusion 360 videos.

      Thanks John, there are great tutorials out there on specific subjects but if you don’t know, you don’t know! That’s why I thought I’d do it how I model, I’ve always learnt the most by looking over peoples shoulders anyway!

    After being inspired by your videos to 3d print my own car parts. I went and bought an ender 3v2 and got it up and running today. This video is so perfectly timed for me.

    Edit* 1 day later and I've already designed and printed (in pla for test fit) 2 parts for my 4age, a distributor/cas cover and a cop (coil on plug) adapter plate. I'm going to be making an itb manifold like yours after I get my engine running on speeduino (also inspired from you).
    For those of you that don't know the cost saving doing it this way yet, it's huge!. Off the shelf cop plate and dizzy cover are $230 aud, and a itb setup is anything from $800 second hand to $1200 with new bolt ons. If we don't count the machine (tools are investments, so they technically don't count... or so I tell myself) it's $100 for filaments, $20 for bits and bobs, $150 for bike itbs for a grand total of $270 ish per engine, it's a bargain!
    $1000-1450 vs $270!!

    Massive respect for making a video on such a broad topic! I design in CAD for a living and you’re spot on with everything in this video.
    More people need to be designing their own parts to properly utilise 3D printers :)

      I found Fusion 360 around 2010. I was designing a pump for and RC Helicopter at the time. I downloaded it by about mid day Saturday. I was instantly obsessed with it. I literally did not sleep for 24 hours. By about 3:00 PM Sunday I had modeled my centrifugal pump and animated it. I still have the model on file and look at it from time to time. The model its self is not bad but its a very unorganized messy file lol. None the less for me it was the most liberating experience of my life. The power to be able to model anything and now and with my CNC mill and 3D printer bring it to life in my humble shed is just mind boggling. I was making a new intake for a chainsaw yesterday. In the space of a few hours I had modeled it and printed it.

    Good video nice clear advise.
    A couple of things to help you,
    if you highlight a line and press X you can turn it into a construction line.
    You can use maths when dimensioning, so rather than calculating 1/2 of 126 you can type 126/2 and it’ll dimension the line to 63.

    Wait so your saying my two dimensions for my sketch cant be r and theta ahhhh years of engineering school wasted lol jk love your videos.
    Bonus tip for anyone 3d printing things, you can create a tiny, usually less than .1mm wide, slot in a part and the 3d printer will act like there is a hole there and put perimaters around it which can be used to stiffen a part. The small slot will be filled in because of the tolerences of the printer and will build up material in that area. This allows stiffer parts with material where you want it while keeping the amount of infil low.

      @@MakingforMotorsport I dont think I came up with it myself, but I used it once when I had a school project to build a mousetrap powered car and we were limited on the amount of infil and walls we were allowed to use and we had a part that broke so I used this to bend the rules to allow the design to still work.

    I wish i had seen this video earlier. I had been racking my brain trying to create a sphere in fusion. When you said revole a arc i was just dumbfounded at the simplicity i completely overlooked. Thank you.

    I've never 3D modeled before and found your modeling videos supremely useful. Within a day I was able to build a speed reduction pulley to increase the torque on my sewing machine in order to sew leather.

    A few small tips:
    -Turn off 3D sketch (unless you really need it)
    -For the 45mm and 6mm holes instead of dimensioning them all just give them an equal constraint (or link the dimension by clicking on the previous one when creating it)
    -I'm asuming the 40mm is because it's halve of the 80 so I would click on the 80 dimension and then put /2 behind it so it will say something like "d12/2" that way it will auto update if the 80 changes, could also give it a midpoint constraint with the vertical construction line that is 80 long that should give the same result.
    -Fully constrain the sketches (it will show a lock symbol on the sketch in the tree on the left if they are fully constrained)
    -For the 22.5 dimension on the revolve I would select the "centerline" first then select the outside line and before you put it down right click and select diameter dimension that way it will see the centerline as the mid and you can just use 45 without having to do halve. (If you want to do it even nicer you could turn on visibility of the first sketch > right click show dimension > and link it with the 45 out of that sketch to link them)
    -I would revolve it with join and then pattern the feature instead of copying the body (and if you would want to you could reuse the 80mm dimension from the first sketch in the pattern feature (hover over a dimension to get the name of the dimension to use))
    (or just model halve the thing and mirror it afterwards)

      Yeah, my constraints game isn’t great, but for the level of people who I am aiming this at, (me when I started) just knowing what they are about and how to useful they are is the aim.
      There are loads of ways of doing it, and no doubt yours is likely more elegant, I just went with one I felt I could easily explain 🤷‍♂️

    Last time I used AutoCad professionally as an Engineer was 23 years ago and creating 3D objects were a lot harder. This Fusion 360 seems pretty good for a free software and a lot of the commands/options still the same.
    Good video for beginners especially you are explaining the 3 axis’s.

    There's lots of really cool features for fusion like defining "parameters" that you can change outside of the sketch, you can reference other dimensions by clicking on them when you edit one or typing it in like d12. And you can import and scale images. Really useful if you have a head gasket or something, take a pic with a ruler, load it with insert canvas, then you can scale it by right clicking on it in the tree of parts

    Constraints in FreeCad was my worst enemy. Now it's a love/hate relationship.
    All is well until you want to come back later and add something. All hell breaks lose.

    Absolutely perfect. Ive been playing with fusion for some while now and it has been a steep learning curve. I feel if this video had been out before i started a few of my projects it wouldnt be 30+ hours of work. i will be saving this video just to watch and use everytime i refresh and go back to designing. It may be the "layman's" version of how to be proficient at cad but I feel after watching that it makes soooooooo much more sense now.     Always interesting the way people use programs and work around stuff.
    I like to label the sketches so I can just directly go to that point and edit.
    Also short cut keys like x changes a line to construction, d for dimension, e for extrude and so on.
    Also pan with the middle scroll button on the mouse and hold shift and use the scroll to orbit.
    Enjoying this sort of content because I am working on similar stuff with my race engine.

    Another great video full of information. Content and production at the top end of things. Nicely done. I recently made an intake manifold and velocity stacks for my ITD 's. I didn't use this method. My son says I'm to old, cause I melt metal things with magic flames.... and spin ally tubes while I rub them with sticks.

      You can tell you son sometimes the old ways are the best ways… but they’ll not the cheapest ways!
      Casting of some kind is definitely on my agenda…. And metal spinning is akin to a lost art…. (I suppose I might be helping kill them off! 😳😬)

      @@MakingforMotorsport I saw a bloke on You Tube spinning hub caps He was in Birmingham. The company had been there 3 generations. You couldn't say they were doing reproductions cause they were still producing from the original dies. Thought I'd give it a go.... and it worked.... I do love a box of sand, got taught to do that in High school. I don't think they're aloud to do ally casting in schools any more...We did the local hill climb last weekend.. beet all the Mustangs and a couple of Ferraris. He put it up on one of his side channels Getz going....

    A word of advice, instead of turning the visibility of everything off, just tap the F7 key and it will cut everything down to the plane you're working on. You'll still see the body of everything behind it. It's a great feature for drawing the sketch of that brace!

    If you want two items to be at the same height, you can use the horizontal and vertical constraint on a pair of points rather than using a construction line and a coincident constraint.

    Another good video. I use CAD all day at work, but it's for civil stuff, so I've not found a massive overlap into 3D modelling, which is a pain. Good to see a straight forward tutorial though
    Plus velocity stacks enable that sweet ITB noise. The world needs more ITBs

    Im working on 3d scanning my Mini R53, all the intricate details like enginebay and wheelwells and all other parts to model stuff around what is already there and have the correct angles and mounting points etc. Using F360 and Blender for it

      @@MakingforMotorsport Photogrammetry and my xiaomi note 10 pro phone, so quite tedious when it comes to mesh generation and cleanup, but the more i do it, i get more details, plus a ton of reference pictures of course. Correcting the scale is essential and is usually off no matter how good the mesh is

    Cracking video. I think it might be useful to do a video on slicing, without thinking about it you’d print from the z-axis up but obviously that would create weakness with your layer lines when you’d ideally need it in the x or y axis. I think lol

    Which is the best approach to scan my current air filter box, remodel it(to remove obstructions but keep mounting points) and print it? My question is related to which is the best software for scanning, the best file format and the best software to remodel the created 3D model? I will be using my phone for the scanning and i have settled on Kiri Engine.

    nice vid, @ 25.08 when you drew the 15mm line you could have done a sketch fillet on the corner of 15mm and then created your offset path and just joined the ends. Would have been cleaner IMHO.

    Dead cool video 👍 how did you do the inlet manifold bits where the extrusions for the runners aren't geometrically simple? I've got a similar challenge for my engine!

    This is such a good tutorial. I use solidworks for my job but fusion seems far easier. I have a large SLA printer which can use resins with high use limits of ~260 C. I'm wondering if I could 3D print nearly a whole ITB manifold.... usually intake manifolds don't go over 200 C

      The software you know best is always easiest but I think the learning curve with Fusion is definitely flatter than others I have tried, but I’ve not done much with SW to be fair…

    I’ve got my ender 3, but my laptop is too old to run 360. What do you recommend for sensible money? I’m not a gamer, so 360 will be the most work it has to do. Great content!

      I ran Fusion360 on a 10year old i5 and integrated graphics, I just banged an SSD and maxed the RAM to 8gb. It started to chug slightly with the ITB manifold, so if you stay the simple side of that, there’s the spec. I changed to a desktop mainly for the video editing, but a 10year old Workstation with 12gb of ram and a 4gb graphics card is doing better 👍

    Hi, i've been working with solidworks for 7 years now (after playing with inventor and some other non parametric softwares the years before) and i think i could add something.
    At around 18:00 when you say the things are symmetrical and then proceed to put dimensions, if i understand the icon well enough you should have the symmetrical contraint, it's the second one starting from right. If that's correct it would ensure symmetry without having to change 2 dimensions every time!
    Also, solidworks lets you write full "equations" as dimension, for example when you said the holes are 126 apart and had to calculate 63, in solidworks you can just write 126/2 and it will do it for you. Does this work on fusion 360? of course this is easy enough that it can be done easily in your mind, but sometimes you have something like d=x/7 and you would have to get a calculator, do it and the approximate, which is usually bad because it's not precise.

      Yeah, at that point I say something like “there are better ways but I’m just gonna do it long hand ‘cus it’s the way I know best”.
      It’s always tricky about how much detail to go into and I shouldn’t signposted people to the resources I just to find stuff out, I’ll do that for the 2nd video I think, but in reality this stuff is so basic I just wanted to lift the lid for people scared of the process…
      I remember something like that true parametric modelling in inventor (not that I played with it) and I think FreeCAD does it aswell I think but not sure about Fusion… but to be honest if people are thinking about that kind of stuff they shouldn’t be learning from me!!😂

      For this small type of project I dont think you workflow is the wrong way. Or that some other way of doing it is better.
      The best way is the one that is quick and easy and gets things done IMO.
      I do it the same way too for like 99% of my fusion 360 work for 3D printing.
      But Fusion 360 supports doing "math" in the dimensions as well. You can Do 126/2 if you want.
      And I know that you can do like a "variable list" and then use those variable names as dimensions.
      Like setting "stack_height" to 110 mm and then you can instead of setting it to 110 in the dimension set the dimension to stack_height or even use math on the variable. Like some other thing might have the dimension of stack_height/2. If you want to change it you just edit it from 110 to let say 160 and in will change all the dimensions referred to as stack_height in all drawing at once.
      You find the "variable list" called parameters under the modify list at almost the bottom called "Change parameters" and there you can add your variable/parameters under the "user parameters" section.

      @@MakingforMotorsport the other nice bonus tip around this is... you can enter the unit of measurement. So it's entirely possible you have to model an imperial feature in an Automotive part, but you have Fusion setup to be metric. If you type in 1in as the dimension, it will do the math for you and give you a 25.4mm result.
      Nice video BTW... it's cool seeing someone passing on their knowledge of how you have found your way through the software to get things done.

      Just filming the ITB section of the next video right now! It’s coming! (But no, you can simply draw the inner diameter on the flange head surface referencing off the centre of one of the initial inlet holes, offset the circle by the width of your o-ring groove. Then do a cut extrude back into the flange et voila!) 👍

    Why are you using your 3D space with Z as one of the horizontal planes when Z is the vertical?

      @@MakingforMotorsport Look at the view cube in the upper right corner. To change this click your name bubble in the top right corner and click preferences. You will find this parameter titled Default modeling orientation. Dont change it on an existing model, it can mess up critical elements. Really this only plays on the print stage and maybe you want to not worry about orientation. I do like to design with my orientation's setup in the software and that way I can model the design in the orientation I want it to be in when I send it to the printer and not have to fuss with moving axis. Anyway I was just curious why you had this setup the way you did and if I am not mistaking how you have it setup in this video is the default as it is when you first startup Fusion 360.

      @@kevinm3751 yeah it will be default as I’ve not played with it, I have checked and the modelling I do start on XY and make a point of saying it. I think everyone has to find their own way of envisaging the 3D space but they do need to think about the print z-axis, if they make that the model axis, we’ll it’s one less button in the slicer 🤷‍♂️.     I also use Fusion 360 free version, which is great, but I absolutely hate that they refuse to let you import an STL file as a parametric model unless you pay for the expensive subscription!

      FYI… I have the full version, and that function just doesn’t work on stls from scans. Too much noise and soft edges between faces. If it does work then the model is so simple you may aswell have modelled it, it would take less time.
      It does work better for stls made directly from CAD, (like you might download off Thingiverse) but it still isn’t a magic wand…
