As far as "modern" western go, OPEN RANGE is great. Love Robert Duvall in that one.

James Drury had a commentary on a "Virginian" DVD about why Westerns died. He said "Blazing Saddles" was funny but after that spoof we could never take Westerns seriously again. Also, Universal City started having tours of the movie production process and that took away some of the magic. And finally, they say there are only 39 stories that can be told in a movie. In a Western, there are only around 15 different stories that you can tell, and that put a limit on how long the western genre could last.
I am 23 years old and still love westerns. I love to be in a western, even as an extra would be cool. I agree, westerns will not be as popular as they were in the past but they will still be made.

You could and can always depend on John Wayne. The good guys always beat the bad guys. There was no sex and not much cussing.
Great interview and unlike many of the guests who dress western for their interviews, Walter Scott actually looks natural in the hat and clothes.
It's kind of the nature of the beast. A cowboy spruced up for the dance don't look like a real cowboy.
I remember reading about what a disaster, 'Heavens Gate' was, so I never went to see the movie. Now, after watching this interview, I want to see it as well as some other movies mentioned here. Thanks Rob for another fascinating interview that left me wanting to see more! Happy Easter!!!
I tried watching it twice before I ever heard anything about it being a disaster and I could never finish it, it was just BORING. Quite a waste of money, talent and everything that should have worked.

@@takkmoran9770 I really wanted to like this movie because of my love of film and history. I appreciate attention to detail that Cimino used, but I still couldn't slog my way through it. I might try again with a new perspective. I'm hoping one of the edited versions might work even though I usually hate taking anything away from a movie.

It’s always nice to hear good things about westerns. I think he’s right it’s mostly a midwestern thing right now. I’ve lost track how many times I’ve watched certain ones like ElDorado over and over. I hope they will always continue to make them. Tom Selleck always struck me a very nice person.

I used to live near my work, 5-7 minutes away, and I would come home for lunch.
Almost every day I would turn on this movie and watch the dinner scene, the scene where James Caan and John Wayne are eating dinner, right after Mississippi avenges his friend's death.
"Will Penny " IMO is the best of the Westerns. Still have a lot to see I'm happy to say .

Fascinating interview. I love any Audie Murphy movie in that brilliant technicolor. His leading ladies had the best wardrobes. My favorite Western is The Searchers. Great script and John Wayne
Always blows my mind when "Far and Away" isn't at the top of the list of other western movie lovers list. Sadly, westerns were not in favor at that time. But an amazing film!!!
Some of the best Western movies, I've ever seen had some of the stars like Ben Johnson, Slim Pickens and others who grew up on ranches and competed on the rodeo circuit before they ended up in movies.
Westerns are a lot better than the slash and slaughter "horror" movies.

I like different genres of movies and television shows but my top
three genres are Westerns, Science Fiction and Horror films from
the 40's up to the 80's.
Absolutely loved The Sacketts.
Pre cowboy , as a kid I loved Fess Parker in his Davy Crockett series with Buddy Ebsen !
Don't you still consider those shows as westerns. I do. I consider "The Last of the Mohicans" as a western. The 1936 version even starred Randolph Scott. I even consider a lot of swashbuckler films as westerns with swords, especially "Zorro" movies and television.

I been watching westerns ever since me and my siblings were kids. We weren't aloud to watch no movies with sexual content but blood, violence, guts and grit in westerns were one of the things that made me and my family such a "wild" (as I like to say) group today. Growing up on westerns is the best way to grow up.
Old westerns weren't bloody
Love westerns, it was always bad when they put early automobiles in with the horses..
Walter Scott proves the old adage that no one really knows what will be hit. Sometimes they know what will be a disaster, but the main thing is to enjoy the work and have a little fun. Like you and Walter touched on at the end there will always be an audience for a good western. Sometimes the executives who control the purse strings and can green light projects, just want to remake a clone of a previous money maker, until the audiences just don't show up and then it's a financial disaster. He does know how to tell are story and milk each one for a laugh. Course it help that you can guide your guests so they can wax eloquently on movie and TV shows that we know and sometimes love.

Loved this interview Rob. In my opinion, "Heavens Gate" is the film that soured Hollywood on western films After that spectacular failure, there wasn't another serious western film for years because studios blamed the failure on westerns rather than all the other factors.
It's huge failure, even taking down United Artists, frightened studios and certainly didn't help those of us who love westerns!!

Would love to see a movie made from Preacher the first mountain man novel series by William W. Johnstone. Sam Elliot would be prefect for the title role.
Heavens gate is a movie that i remember when it first came out was CRUSHED in movie reviews. I have put off seeing it since HOWEVER i just bought the Criterion blueray of it and will watch it all these years later, the scene's i have seen look beautifully shot..

Quigley Down Under. First saw the previews at a theater and it didn't look like something I would want watch. Lesson learned, never trust previews! Saw it in bits and pieces on TV never watching the whole film but I liked what I saw. Allen Rickman, a great bad guy. Happened to be clicking through the channels one day and caught it at the beginning. Great movie.
It’s beautifully done. Tom terrific and Rickman perfect. Love the score too.
I so hope I can get out there again and meet you sometime Rob, you hold the key to so much history of the formative movies I watched an love.

I’d love to see a good western any day! I’d love to see a western weekly TV show. I’m sick of cop, doctor and zombies shows.
"Justified" was basically a western set in modern times. I heard that they are doing a revival of it.
My cousin Margie was an aspiring actress & was so excited to get a small speaking part in Heavens Gate as one of the Polish immigrants. The movie bombed so badly that it essentially ended her career before it barely got started. Folks in the film industry can be superstitious about hiring someone who was in a movie that lost millions.
No one ever mentions The Big Country, William Wyler's 1958 epic with Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Burl Ives, Carroll Baker, Chuck Connors, Charles Bickford, and Charlton Heston. Beautiful film with an amazing score. Burl Ives took home an Oscar. The score was nominated but didn't win. It should have.

"The Big Country" was the first movie I saw in an indoor theater. I loved it and have it on DVD. I was young and impressionable and afterwards tried to pattern my life after the Gregory Peck character.
WOW, a lot of my friends were extras on Heavens Gate is Kalispell, time really flies by.

Another fine episode. Most of the films mentioned in the video I have seen more than once. Heavens Gate I hadn’t seen until a year or so ago when it was on one of the Retro movie channels. The movie was interesting but not as enjoyable as many other westerns I have seen for me. The background of the movie mentioned in your video was helpful in understanding the plot. Thanks for that.

I had the pleasure and got to know Walter when he stunt coordinated several episodes of BONES... I was the only one on the show who knew how good and how iconic he was in the stunt profession. Unfortunately our producers or rather the star (David) didn't respect his experience and knowledge.
A case of the old and best HOLLYWOOD being world's apart from what it is now!
Walter certainly had the BEST of it, along with all the other stunt legends, and specially as a WESTERN stuntman, not that he couldn't do most stunts in any genre. Very easy going and straight shooting kind of guy...I knew his younger brother too.

Have met a few stage hands & others, a dog handler who got me a screen credit for finding the star pups 🐶 chew toy, it's the stories they tell and their enthusiasm in the present film project

Take my strong advice, and I saw it on release, DON'T. Unless you want to see what's probably the worst film ever made, and with a huge budget and big name cast.
@@brianmccarthy5557 I remember hearing when it came out that it was not watchable. When a movie seems terrible to me I usually notice it within the first few minutes of viewing. I like to read and usually within a page or two I figure out whether I will continue or not. I still would like to see if I agree or not with the critics.
I see that Heaven's Gate is 5 hours and 25 minutes long. Sounds like a mini series.

Tom Selleck’s Movie in Australia ‘Quigley Downunder’ was pretty good , but USA was not the only country to have Westerns or Cowboy movies . OZ had our own for years, we had story’s to tell back in the 1800’s as well.
Cattle Drives from outback Queensland to the Northern Territory have been happening since then & still happen today.
The drives spawned interesting movies probably only seen this side of the Pacific & Rodeo cowboys have been competing in America for years because we have pretty much the same system in place but you’d never know it.
We grew up watching the same Westerns and we understood the storyline’s.
Errol Flynn , Peter Finch and Rod Taylor were just some of pre Hollywood movie actors that started their careers in some our old Aussie Flicks , but whether it’s Seppo Classics or Aussie type Westerns , they stayed with us from little boys & still today we watch UA-cam videos on them like this brilliant channel.

A Word on Westerns Cheers thats very good mail Rob , Oz has always been a microcosm of America’s take on life through its Movies & and when young I compared every Western including Oz movies to Red River , The Searchers , Liberty Valance , I’m sure a lot people did because of their quality & popularity.
Sundowners a absolute classic but not a western ! also not Westerns but worth a watch ‘Sunday Too Far Away’ (Jack Thompson)
&. ‘ The Picture Show Man’ with Rod Taylor .. both good mid centenary Australian movies.
Strange how growing up so far away from America but still placing actors like John Wayne , Lee Marvin. Jimmy Stewart , Robert Mitchum , on pedestals and seemingly remain there for most of a blokes life.
when as a young Kid I bumped into Lee Marvin in the 1970s walking out of a shop in Cairns North Queensland , I was frozen but i knew it was him because he came to my home town each year fishing for Black Marlin out in the Coral Sea , the very same Coral Sea that Lee & the United States helped save Australia’s arse in during the Battle of the Pacific in WW2 🇺🇸 🇦🇺 🙏- ( first time I realised the world wasn’t really that big after all.)
Lee used to kick around Cairns in local Pubs when not out on the Reef & was thought of by everyone , not as a big Star , but just as a good bloke , which is about as good as a compliment gets in Australia.
He always used to say in the local paper & elsewhere that he only did the movies to finance his fishing.
So judging by the popularly of your show a lot of Movie’s & TV shows are still obviously on people’s hard-drives & get refreshed every time from watching it , so cheers mate thanks for the introspection , I’m pretty sure you’re a good bloke. 👍
Two of the best westerns I ever saw were "The Man from Snowy River" and "Return to Snowy River." Also, "The Road Warrior" is basically a remake of "Shane." Two other great movies from Australia are "Breaker Morant" and "Phar Lapp" though not really westerns.

Heaven's Gate, in my opinion, was a really good movie... I've watched it several times. Watching the fiddler playing at the skating rink was worth seeing the movie by itself.

I wanted to recommend that myself. Lee Horsley was in "Paradise" or "The Guns of Paradise" and "Hawkeye" which I consider a western. Also, the female lead was in "The Man from Snowy River" and "Return to Snowy River" and on of the most beautiful women. Also, any of the actors from "The Magnificent Seven" television series, or the more recent remake.

The mention of Vilmos Zsigmond ...I recall meeting him and Jack Nicholson while they were scouting locations for The Two Jakes...Didn't really speak much with Nicholson, but Vilmos and I had a great conversation...mostly about his early work with cheapie producer Arch Hall...it was a fun day.

I can understand all the swords in that movie, he was adapting a samurai story to a western setting. But why make the revolvers 12-shots?!? That was a little loopy. I guess he didn't want to slow things down to reload. Would've been a better movie if he'd kept the hardware more believable...
Hey Rob, did you see the Sam Elliot movie The Hero? Used to be a big Elliot fan (especially for Conagher!) but I really disliked that one. Felt it was looking down at Western fans, especially in that scene with them giving him a career award. That plus him often complaining in interviews about being typecast as a cowboy have tended to color my opinion of him the last few years...
I actually saw it at a screening with Sam. It was written specifically for him and we all thought he gave a terrific performance. I liked the film and the way it reflected changing times.
Not a western, but i find it strange no one asked Sam Elliott the line " There's a book around ,Point of Impact ,with a character Bob Lee Swagger, interested ??".
@@MrPh30 I would've loved to have seen Point of Impact made with Stephen Lang, the bad guy from Avatar. Unfortunately Wahlberg made it into the movie/series Shooter and kinda ruined the character for what could've been a great franchise.

The biggest problem with Heaven's Gate was the length. I'm sure it could have been cut in half and the story wouldn't have suffered.
I always thought that if you cut it up you could get three decent movies out of it: a western, an immigrant story and a love story.
Just a thought, and maybe this has already happend but I would like to see a word on westerns do a show on the best movies of the Civil war.

Heavens Gate was just too long. It had over extended scenes. The skating rink scene comes to mind.
I loved Heavans Gate I have it saved on the PVR on our Dish.
Didn’t have the same old standard Blue print of the Cattlemen’s Association running of the small farmers.
Where the gun fighter rides his stallion in one day and saves the day.
It think it was actually quite accurate in the story telling of the time period.
Yes start bit too long could be cut down but that gave the background our hero who gave up the Elites lifestyle to live out on the west.
Rob: Another good video. I have to go back and finish watch the George Peppard movie (Canyons for Cordoba). It is great. To many of the 70's Westerns were less than stunning. Not the case with that one. The story theme is based on actual events. My grandfather was in the Calvary and rode with Black Jack Perishing when he was trying to catch Poncho Viva. (My grand father was an enlisted man)

It was an action film and I enjoyed John Russell as "Blackjack" - John was in the t.v. series "Law Man".
@@johnzeszut3170 I am a big fan of John Russell. I see that Warner Brothers has released four seasons of "Lawman" that I plan to buy. I even enjoyed him as the villains in "Rio Bravo" and "Pale Rider." However, I kept expecting George Peppard to say "I love it when a plan comes together" at the end of "Cannon for Cordoba."
@@williambilyeu9801 In "Lawman" John never did crack a smile. He does show up in a lot of movies. "Cannon for Cordoba" was on last evening and I thought he was an excellent General Pershing.

One thing I liked about El Dorado was that John Wayne's Character was named Cole Thornton, as my name is Cole Parker; and no I was not named after the movie character. I got mine from my Uncle and I was born before the movie came out.

CHISUM is always a must see. Although I do not speak Spanish I watched it anyway dubbed which did not matter because I knew the dialog anyway.

I would like to know his opinion of the Long Riders, which I personally enjoyed. Plus I may watch Heaven's Gate at some point, even though I've heard it is flawed historically.
