Like many things my pronunciation of 'Limonite' is off. So embarrassing, If I could still add annotations to the video I would.
Your pronunciation of Goethite is actually pretty good though, so there is that

Bog irroooon bog irooon
take me home, country roads, to the place where there are bogs. west virginia. mountain iron. country boy. take me road.
He's a chemist loose and running, came a whisper from each lip
And he's here to do some business with some bog iron on his hip
Bog iron.. Booog iron... Oh he tried to match the ranger with the bog iron on his hip
I read the title as big iron so now I've got the original and bog version stuck in my head.
oh he tried to match the ranger with the stfu on his hip.. shut the fuck up on his hip.....
To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day
Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say,
No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip
The stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip,
Big iron on his hip
It was early in the morning when he rode into the town
He came riding from the south side, slowly lookin' all around
"He's an outlaw loose and runnin'", came a whisper from each lip
"And he's here to do some business with a big iron on his hip,
Big iron on his hip"
In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas Red
Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead
He was vicious and a killer, though a youth of twenty four
And the notches on his pistol numbered one and nineteen more,
One and nineteen more
Now the stranger started talkin' made it plain to folks around
Was an Arizonia ranger, wouldn't be too long in town
He was here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead
And he said it didn't matter that he was after Texas Red,
After Texas Red
Wasn't long before this story was relayed to Texas Red
But the outlaw didn't worry, men who tried before were dead
Twenty men had tried to take him, twenty men had made a slip,
Twenty one would be the ranger with the big iron on his hip,
Big iron on his hip
Now the morning passed so quickly and it was time for them to meet
It was twenty past eleven when they rode out in the street
Folks were watchin' from their windows,
Every body held their breath,
They knew this handsome ranger was about to meet his death,
About to meet his death
There was twenty feet between them
When they stopped to make their play
And the swiftness of the Ranger still talked about today
Texas Red had not cleared leather when a bullet fairly ripped
And the ranger's aim was deadly, with the big iron on his hip,
Big iron on his hip
It was over in a moment and the crowd all gathered 'round
There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground
Oh, he might have went on livin' but he made one fatal slip
When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip,
Big iron on his hip
Big iron, big iron,
Oh he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip,
Big iron on his hip
Do not. DO NOT!!! Try to match the ranger with the bog iron on his hip
20 men have tried to take me, 20 men have made a slip. 21 will be that ranger with the bog iron on his hip!
If I dig past the top soil in my yard, I find this stuff. It was super interesting. Any chance we'll be seeing a process in extracting iron from bog ore?
I think you just need some coal, a clay container, and a blast furnace. But I look forward to seeing what method Cody plans on using.
I've tried extracting some of the iron the primitive way, but that project was left on hold but I imagine there is a far better way to extracting the iron, probably chemically.

It ain’t Bog Iron. It’s Bong Iron.
Are you trying to tell us something with the video length?

You're literally everywhere lately. How are you not getting shadowbanned?
I wish you could know how much I love those random geology/mining videos on your channel
Is this the same stuff that Primitive Technology harvests from his creek?
should turn on subtitles on Primitive Technology's videos. He describes the orange-brown goop he uses as 'iron bacteria'.
Adam Rivera
I’m assuming when that bacteria dies it leaves behind iron ions in the water.
Most of the bog iron in the civil war came from my state, NJ. It actually is very common here
And he's here to do some business with the bog iron on his hiiippp...
Loving the active start to 2019.
Cant wait to see some more your bigger projects
i love that you always put effort on your intros :)
I read that as what is Big Iron, and Marty robbins instantly popped into my head
I love your videos Cody. Keep up the good work, proud of you.
I think you could shorten the Intro to only show the bit where the torch comes into play, would be a little snappier :) Also, great video!
Love the creative intros and content, Cody.
Hey Cody hows the Ecosphere going??
It’s awesome that you’re working with some smaller guys!
Keep up the good work Cody!
Definitely interested in seeing more, Cody!
Bog? Give me a quick rundown guys.
Love this topic! I'm from New Jersey where we have a long history of smelting bog iron (pine barrens) and I'd love to hear more about it in another video!

I grew up in Springville, UT. As a boy, I used to hike the mountains on my own. After a long trip (for me) I would come back into town and find a flowing well. I liked it because it tasted like it contained iron. I don't know if that would be a source for you or not, but your video brought it to mind.
Glad this vid isn't too long, otherwise we'd get bogged down watching it
90% of the content on your channel baffles the hell out of me, but i watch every one of your videos in the hopes of learning something.
1:32 What happened that you decided you needed chainmail suddenly!?
filming youtube videos is a risky business with the algorithm around. you need protection
Taking my first year of IB Chemistry in highschool and it feels so good to finally be able completely understand what is happening in your videos.
This is fascinating. I work on a country house estate, and in the woods there are areas of slimy brown stuff in all the slow moving water. This has finally explained what causes it! I couldn’t tell if it was microbes, or something leaching out of the ground. Turns out it’s both, microbes causing a reaction with something leaching out of the ground! This is why I subscribe, I never know what I’m going to learn!!
can someone give me a quick rundown on the bog irons?
Thanks I appreciate this I grew up in an area where there is a forge bog iron was made into cannon balls used in Revolutionary War. When a teenager I often explored the swamp looking for the ore only finding brown oily mud. I concluded all the ore was taken.
Bog Iron? Isn’t that the stuff from Primitive Technology?
@@SpaceJesus So was I. Whether this is the 'iron bacteria' he finds in the mud.
that bacterial slime plays a role in forming bog iron. when iron-bearing ground water enters a bog, a lot of the iron precipitates out. Some because of the bog's natural acidity, some because of the activity of iron-precipitating bacteria (like the slime PT uses). The microscopic bits of iron collect and compress over time into chunks of bog iron.
A month! How can I wait a whole month? Teaser at the end I noticed....makes it harder to wait. Excellent vid Cody - keep them coming.
1:15 His lack of using the windshield wipers and defroster disturbs me.
Didn’t you mean BIG IRON?
-Arizona Ranger
Bog iron is really common here in Sweden, we dug up like 5 tonnes of it when we where building oure medivial village up in the forrest. We used most of it for blooms and we sold alot of it to foundrys around Sweden because of the sheer amount we had. We where thinking of using it for swords and other tools
Why you wearing chain mill
If something explodes(not unlikely with Cody) it helps, also its cool, but logo and josh are also right
Cody, all ways the best. Happy New Year Lad.
I thought it said "Big iron" and all I can say is I'm at least a bit disappointed.
Bog iron was common in middle-age Lithuania, since we don't have any other ore to smelt.
In my hometown there's old meloration (drainage for swamps) system, in the spot where drainage pipes connects to a ditch there's always a layer of ironous flakes. If you're interested I could sent you a sample ;)
Why are you wearing chainmale
I was looking for someone else who noticed.
Edit: his clothing also goes from red to green.
I am glad you did this one. Been wanting to try something like this. I am in NM and like you folks further West, not much "boggyness". But "not much" means not impossible...

Hey Cody,
Please elaborate more on bog iron. Its very interesting to me since it was one of the main and only sources of iron for a long time in my home country.

I love your channel for this type of random science. Fuck yeah. Keep it up Cody.
The kids throwing rocks with slings brings back memories.... My son really enjoyed it. Had you discovered that if you take relatively flat and long thin pieces can produce a neat warbling sound?
Thanks so much for communicating geochemistry to the masses!
A few hundred years ago bog iron was mined closer than half a mile away where i've grown up. There is a field near by where i found a lot of slag from the bloomery furnaces. But it's not formed any more. The coal mining and drainage of the swamp lowered the ground water level to much. But the groundwater is very iron rich.
I'm very interested how you will make iron.
I actually grew up near some of the more famous American bog iron sites in New Jersey. Seeing plants covered in orange slime was a regular thing, and you dig around in the bottom of the bog a bit and come up with loads of little spherical deposits about the size of a marble or larger. It has to be some kind of anaerobic bacteria concentrating the iron, because the bog mud you find them in stinks like rot.
Dude look at the lens not the camera screen! Great content as always 🙂
I love this channel. He talks, talks and out of nowhere he has goggles on... *I will now simulate this* 😂
I live in Virginia and these swaps are everywhere. I would love to learn how to smelt the iron out of it.

It would be pretty cool to see you collect enough bog iron to smelt and possibly Smith into a tool or for some links to incorporate a decorative design in your chain mail.
That stuffs all over lakes here in Australia. It’s very common.
Delaware is mostly bog and farm land. When people tap a well for water they have very rich iron water which must be treated and filtered.
Hahahaha that "Bing Bing Bing" at the end with the hammer was hilarious! xD
I like how instead of getting a recommendation for this video on my front page I instead got a "Cody'sLab viewers might also like..." section there.
I don't know why, but it's clear UA-cam has it out for Cody.
Blanket bogs are common in Ireland. They sit on an iron pan, which prevents the water draining.
Yeeeees new Cody video!
Great video, Cody.
Love your stuff, super cool and useful
The length of this video is the ideal time of day to do science.
Thanks for video! I learned what is bog iron 2 years ago when I bought some land. So far I've collected several pounds of bog iron from our 1 acre garden. I hope to one day smelt it and eventually create a kitchen knife. How cool would that be?
Great video Cody 👍
Hey Cody, I was wondering if you could make a video explaining how to convert a simple carbureted four stroke engine to run on ethanol. I think I understand the process; enlarge carb jets, quicken spark timing, adjust valve timing, and optionally add flywheel weight. I’ve never actually seen it done before, so I’m curious about it, as are many others I suspect.
as you can see, Cody is happily wearing his chain mail again to simulate out-of-world gravity once he takes it off again
