    I use this info. I have a loss limit, and a win goal, as well as a time limit. When I hit any of the three, if luck has been really good, stay and re-evaluate those limits and goals, and otherwise depart. Always arrive with a full tank of gas.

      wake up, they are making GAZILLIONS of MONNAYE of gamblers. the only way to win with these machines is to buy one of them and put them out for others to loose their money.
      but then i´m not happy making others unhappy.
      so the only real way to deal with the problem is to walk by. if you dont play, the machine wont either.
      and that is one thing we teach our children that money is a serious matter, like fire and blades nothing to play with.
      slot machines in germany (outside of explicit casinos) have a maxbet limit of 2€ (older games 5lines) up to 4€ (10lines and more)
      so the linewin pay is better than with a hundred winning lines, which would require a fullscreen win to payback what you pay for.
      mathematically 2 € maxbet at 5 winning lines, top symbol 5 of a kind pays 2000€. if you get all 5 winning lines, a fullscreen 2€ bet can pay €10.000.
      if you play 2€ maxbet - with a €10.000 budget, how long can you play from it? 5000 spins.
      in smaller numbers
      5€ at 0.05€ bet is a hundred spins. lets say you repeat your set budget 5 times after you lost the first five bucks (so alltogether 25€) at 0.05€ a spin, then
      calculated
      you could go ten times gambling from the money of the biggest win possible, some more, some less. progressive jackpots excluded - that chance is so rare.
      it just doesnt add up - especially because i think the chance to get a win at a lower bet is greater.
      play less lines, shorter sessions, if you get the win, take it and leave.
      for a problem gambler, a win is no hope, its poison. the dosis makes the poison. (paracelsus) resist the temptation.
      walk by and go on with your live.
      can you teach to win @ slot machines?
      if you could, theyd take the machines off ´n away.

    This video is true for random slots, but depending on where you are in the world not all slots are random. In the UK many slots are random and many are compensated. Compensated slots are affected by previous play. Previous losses increase your odds of a win, a previous win reduces your odds of a win. This gives operators more consistent cashbox takings. In this scenario it makes some sense to chase your losses, because the scenario is actually much closer to the conveyor belt than the tumbler of marbles.

      This was very true in the 90s when I worked in an amusement arcade, some of the staff watched people pump money into slot machines then after the player left the staff literally fought each other to get on the machine because it almost inevitably gave them a profit if they persisted playing it enough.

The funny thing is, I went back with the left over $374 and ended up winning $3672 on another machine..! That was a crazy night... If you play the slot machine long enough, you will lose exactly what the casino advantage is. And you will lose at that particular rate whether you hit the big jackpot or not. If you hit it early in your play, you will lose it all back with continued play. If you hit it later in your play, it won’t be enough to recover your losses. If the rake it 3%, you will lose $300.00 for every $10,000.00 invested. You can make 500 decisions an hour on a machine, so you will get to 10,000 decisions in 20 hours of play. 3 standard deviations is 150. So if you play $1 at a time you are well over 99% to be down $150 or worse. So you can see that this is not gambling. It’s a mathematical certainty that you will lose no matter how lucky you get in the short run.

    Hi Folks - This is a very good video and I will encourage people to watch it. Like everything, there are examples which do note quite fit the mold. A jackpot which must pay by a certain point (eg, $500) and it is close to reaching $500 -- well, as long as it is not going to cost you $500 -- if will always pay off. I personal always bet low -- and I do get enough enjoyment for the loss. Nice to find this site. I think Loto-Quebec did a fine job. Take care folks.

Never withdraw from the ATM at the casino as they charge you with much higher fee. The bottom line is have fun, know your limit and always assume that you are gonna lose money.

      Hello Charles,
      There is no connection between the amount of a bet and the odds of winning, but there is one between the amount bet and the amount of the prize. Higher bets give access to higher prizes.
      Some games require a minimum bet to grant access to a bonus round, a progressive jackpot or a special prize. When this is the case, it is explained in the rules.
      It is also important to understand that prizes are not programed to be won at specific times. The outcome of each game is random.

    But what you failed to mention in your "large cylinder full of marbles" analogy is that it only applies to maximum jackpot wins. There are also hundreds, if not thousands, of lesser prizes & jackpots available on any given slot machine, so you would also need to add several hundred (or thousand) "other colored" marbles into the mix which would greatly improve your chances of a win. This would make your analogy more accurate. You're trying to give the impression that the odds of winning *_anything_* on a slot machine are astronomical...and that just simply isn't the case. Contrary to your opinion, the majority of players are not realistically expecting to win the jackpot, they're just hoping to go home with a decent payout. For example, if you're playing a slot machine that has a jackpot total of $100,000 but you only end up winning $750 on a single spin (which is far more likely to happen), I'd consider that a great day at the casino.
    UPDATE: Just got back from Empire City Casino in Yonkers, NY where I won a $5, 300 progressive *jackpot* on the Monopoly™ slots. Gotta love those shifty red marbles. 😁

      We are sorry and surprised that you concluded from our video that the odds of winning are astronomical. The language used was more nuanced: “most games produce losing outcomes,” “the vast majority of results are negative,” “jackpots are
      few in number,” “the odds of winning are minimal,” “it is far more likely that one will end up losing more than winning.”
      That being said, the text is far from stating that the odds of winning are astronomical.

      I am sorry and surprised that you concluded from my post that all I concluded from your video was that the odds of winning are astronomical. The language I used was more nuanced: "your *'large cylinder full of marbles' analogy* should only apply to maximum jackpot wins," "your *'large cylinder full of marbles' analogy* is faulty & misleading," "burying a lone red marble amidst a million white marbles, like a needle in a haystack, most definitely gives off the impression that the odds of winning are astronomical, as there are no other marbles of various colors to represent the multitude of lesser prizes & jackpots that can also be had," "most players do not realistically expect to win a jackpot," "you don't need to hit the jackpot to go home a winner."

    • @lotoquebec
      @lotoquebec  8 років тому +2

      Dear Aj:
      Thank you for your comment. The goal of this video was to provide players with a greater understanding of the notion of probability. The following offers an short explanation of how lottery video terminals, per se, work:
      In slot machines and VLTs, random results are produced by a specialized computer chip called a random number generator (RNG). The RNG’s job is to cycle continuously through millions of numbers at several thousand numbers a second. When a player pushes the “spin” or “deal” button, the number that was available on the RNG at that split second is selected. Pushing the button a thousandth of a second earlier or later would result in a completely different outcome. The RNG runs continuously, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, even when no one is playing.
      As you can see, random number generators make it impossible for a player (or the house, for that matter) to know what result will happen next. Some players mistakenly believe that if a machine has not paid out for a while, it is more likely to pay out or becomes “due” to pay. In reality, every spin has an equal chance of winning, no matter has happened previously.
      For more information on VLTs, you may consult the following two sites:

    how are slots random if they say they give 98% or 96.3% back? The are not! They are made in such way to make you want to play more. They give 2 bonus symblos and just barely missing the thirnd and a few spins later, the same happens. So you say "its about to give the bonus" and you keep playing.. But other than that, i agree with this strategy.

      Hello,
      There is a critical difference between prize structures (return rates) as set by the rules that regulate Loto-Québec and the outcome of individual spins that abide by the laws of chance.
      The average rate of return of our lottery video machines is 92% (despite the fact that it is only legally required to be 83% according to our governing body the Régie des alcools des courses et des jeux (RACJ). This rate of return is programmed into each lottery video terminal and is calculated over millions of
      spins, taking into account three factors: the random nature of chance, the multiple different games available and the variety of prizes and possible combinations. Rates of return are verified by the RACJ on a yearly basis.
      Best regards,

    • @CKevni
      @CKevni 6 років тому

      Interesting. Thanks for the explanation Loto-Quebec. Question though: Wouldn't a pre programmed (and legally required minimum rate of return often as high in the 90's %) by very nature, conflict with true randomness / laws of chance though?

    • @lotoquebec
      @lotoquebec  6 років тому

      No, as these two “variables” are independent of one another.
      What is determined exclusively by chance is the position on which the reel stops on every spin. So, no matter how many stops and no matter the value given to each and every one of them (upon which the return rate is determined), only chance determines where the reel stops and, by the same fact, if you win or you lose.

    • @sachinvarghese4577
      @sachinvarghese4577 6 років тому

      C. Kevni I get your question, and the answer is that a lot of math goes in to designing the reels to achieve the specific payout.
      For example, if you flip a coin, the outcome is random, like in the slot machine. If you keep flipping it, say 10 billion times, you'll know for a fact that 50 percent will land on heads, though each flip is random.
      Imagine a slot machine where most of the symbols are the same and pay high. On average, you'd win more from that than a slot machine with a bunch of randomly distributed symbols. This is how the rtp of a slot machine works.

    • @zemzem8323
      @zemzem8323 6 років тому

      C. Kevni - the payout signs are very deceiving. If you look closer it says up to 98% payout and that high payout can be only 1 machine out of the whole casino.

    It's not quite as bad as what is explained in this video, you don't have to get the 'jackpot' to win, or be in profit. But at the end of the day, slot machines are negative expectation games. You do not expect to profit long-term. It is mathematically impossible to do so (over a sufficient portion size). So, people who play slot machines should do so recreationally for the fun of it. From the perspective of actually making profit, not all gambling is automatically losing, for instance you can bet on horses or sports or poker profitably, and many kinds of investing are a form of gambling, the lines between the two pursuits become blurred depending on how one goes about it. But slot machines will always be negative expectation games which means you cannot win over large enough portion sizes, just like lotteries.

    Some machines have progressive jackpots that MUST hit by the time it reaches a pre determined amount. Its not always as simple as you describe. Some machines have progressives that if you wait until they get high enough you actually get advantage over the casino up to 10-12%

    • @lotoquebec
      @lotoquebec  2 роки тому

      The type of game you mentioned works with an algorithm ensuring that the closer the progressive jackpot gets to the value at which it must be awarded, the greater your chances are of winning. However, the game rules state that the jackpot must be higher than the value displayed. This means that the person who bets when the value is reached doesn’t necessarily win the progressive jackpot. The jackpot is always awarded at random. The algorithm determining the winner is based on odds that are spread among several parties.

      Hello,
      The situation you’re describing is still a product of chance: with slot machines, it’s possible to win several times in a row and then not win anything at all for a long time. Chance remains entirely unpredictable and uncontrollable.
      Here are two other videos on the topic:
      ua-cam.com/video/nKAes19RYWU/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/uhwmuSVI_6A/v-deo.html
      Having said that, and for your information, the average return to player of video lottery terminals has been 92% since legal video lottery terminals were installed in 1994. The standard that the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux (RACJ) has set is 83%. The return to player is programmed for each terminal and obtained after millions of spins, taking into account the randomness of the results, the gameplay, the variety of prizes and the possible combinations.
      In fact, the RACJ verifies the return to player every year.
      Have a nice day!

    Casinos will do whatever they can to get your money. They try to swindle the public. But if you as a player win, they make you feel as if you are a thief. People have been taken to a back room and tortured for counting cards at blackjack. Meanwhile, the casino reduces the blackjack premium from 3-2 to 6-5. Since the rest of the game is the same, the public doesn’t think that’s much to give up and continue to play. This rule change steals money from an unsuspecting public and is no different from actually pulling a gun to a bank teller and demanding cash. The casinos have successfully passed a law prohibiting computer aid in helping players play their games. Computers in no way artificially change the outcome of any game. Computers just help the players make the best mathematical decisions. The casinos will shuffle the cards at blackjack when small cards have been played and deal them down when big cards have been played. This has the same effect as playing with a deck short of high cards in the long run. Playing blackjack with only 2 Aces in the deck is cheating on part of the casino. Phil Ivey won millions from the casino at baccarat by making use of imperfections in the cards called edge shorting. The casino agreed to the dealers and cards to be used. Yet the courts found in favor of the casino and were absolved of their debt to Ivy. This is a case of money protecting money. It’s not a decision based on ethics. I don’t feel sorry for the casino when they lose. The public should be allowed to use their intellect to win at the casino and not be accused of cheating when they win.

They don't call them one arm "BANDITS" for nothing. The only only thing everybody needs to know is STAY AWAY FROM THE ONE ARM BANDITS! The casino will pay blackjack even money if they thought that they could get people to play. The public should not play blackjack unless it pays 3-2. The public should not play a continuously shuffled game either. The public should never play a slot machine. The public should not play a double zero roulette game. The casino will offer a triple zero roulette game if they could get away with it. I educate players when I’m in a casino. This is how I cut into the casino profits. I simply make them aware of the math.

      Hi!
This rate of return is programmed into each lottery video terminal and is calculated over millions of spins, taking into account three factors: the random nature of chance, the multiple different games available and the variety of prizes and possible combinations. Rates of return are verified by the RACJ on a yearly basis.
      Best regards

Sure to some that rarely or don't gamble but I spend far less money than most. Watching people ahead of me buying 10$,20$,etc... scratchoffs makes me shake my head. If I'm going to get the endorphins going it will be fantasizing about money that will secure me for a lifetime. I've done the slot machine thing and I never win and am stuck for hours waiting for others to decide it's time to go. Boring and the flashing lights give me a headache. Your perception is only good if symbols do not have fixed positions, obviously, mechanical reels have fixed positions but attempt to randomize the number of symbols that pass the payline on each spin, which they do fairly successfully; but video slots is where your logic falls apart. If a single reel on video slot contain 11 possible symbols and the outcomes are random, then why would they need thousands of stops? They would only need 11, cuz there are only 11 possible outcomes in a single location on a single reel. You would only need thousands of stops on a reel with 11 possible symbol outcomes per single result space if the symbols have fixed, non-random, unmovable positions on the reels- which would then allow a specific number of symbols to pass with each spin according to machine specific rules, thus allowing the average payout percentage to be preset. One might space the highest paying symbols at intervals of prime numbers of symbol spaces apart on an individual reel, make each reel unique in its symbol layout and then make the spin rules with other prime numbers not used to space high paying symbols, for the number of symbol spaces to pass by the payline on each spin, thus being able to completely predetermine each outcome while making it ‘appear’ to be random, telling everyone its random, and then hoping no one figures it out. Or at least if they do, they do not tell regulators whom seem to be as clueless as the so called gambling experts who just promote the same bullshit that they believe to be the truth. You are all hopelessly ignorant.

      I believe there can be a slight strategy. If you know the general payout percentage and the general frequency of minor payouts, you can hedge your bets to wait-out the machine until you reach payout probability. Simply stated : make the minimum bet the majority of the time, and intermittently raise the bet after a streak of no-wins. The point is to stretch your bank and minimize your losses between wins. I did this once successfully on a quarter machine, and have done it consistently on home computer slot games - assuming computer games are programmed the same as casino slots. It takes a long time, but if you do it right you can come out ahead, and at least stretch your play time. It feels like you are actually "playing" the game, rather than mindlessly feeding it coins until they are gone.

    Whilst what is said is true to a point it doesnt take into account large betting and the laws that control probability of how often a jackpot will go off, if a jackpot goes off once in every million and it hasn't gone off in 2 million pushes, the odds are IT IS DUE. Nothing beats the laws of probability. This is true misinformation.

    • @futt-bucker
      @futt-bucker 5 років тому +1

      1st you don't know if the machine hit the jackpot or how long ago.(which that don't matter anyway). Your idea is common "gamblers fallacy". Every spin resets the probability back to 1 and a million. Probability is based on the likeliness of 1 single event occuring. In your mind, you're thinking that because the jackpot hasn't hit in 2 million spins, it has to come soon. This is the exact reason gamblers loose all their money. If a random outcome happens more often than expected (loosing spins), then a (jackpot) is more likely to occur in the future. That is a fallacy and an incorrect assumption. That's not how randomness works. Your probability remains 1 and 1 million every spin regardless what past events occured. Probability works with things that are mechanical, not random generated. There is not a predetermined number of jackpots in a machine. Only to pay out 90% is guaranteed. That could be in the form of 5$ payouts. Hell the machine may never even ever hit a jackpot. As long as it pays out the legal % by the end of its life. So probability is irrelevant and can't be calculated to begin with. That's why the machine says "probability is no less than 1 and 1 million". But I digress. That's not to say you can't get lucky and hit a jackpot on your first spin, but that has nothing to do with probability and all about chance. Also, take into account the house edge. You are set to loose. This is not like having a bag of marbles with 3 colors and the probability of picking a certain color is X. You are at a disadvantage the entire time. Suppose you play 1 million spins and hit the 1 jackpot. It would cost you 1 million and 1 thousand dollars to do it, putting you at a loss. Or say you hit the jackpot first spin, then take that million and put it into the machine. By the end of the million, you are GUARANTEED to walk home with 0. Unless you walk away right there. (That would be luck or chance not probability). Your comment even debunks your theory within itself. If you have 1 and a million chance to hit a jackpot and it hasn't hit in 2 million spins. Then your probability factor isnt very credible. Long bets or long play probability don't work when your payout is only guaranteed to be 90%. The slot will just chip away at you until it's all gone, unless you walk after hitting lucky. With that, Are you willing to be the one who tests it? You are the exact person the casino loves to have come play. Moral of the story is, when it comes to slots, the more your play the more you will eventually loose. You explained a gambling addiction to the T

      Hi!
      The example illustrates the probability of winning, not the payout percentage.
      With the bag of 20 marbles, each time you choose a marble, your chance of choosing the red one is 1 in 20, because you always put back the white marble.
      Sometimes the red marble could be chosen on the first attempt and sometimes it could take 50 attempts. After millions of games played, statistically, the red marble should be chosen 5% of the time.
      Now, let’s say that each time you choose a marble, it costs you $1. If you choose a white marble, you lose your $1, but if you choose a red marble you win $18.40. Statistically, after millions of games played, for every $20 wagered, the payout will be $18,40. So even if the probability of winning is 5%, the payout will be 92%.
