54:37 Trivia Time: President Miyazaki has been quoted numerous times saying how the biggest influence in designing BloodBourne's Eldritch abominations was horrific Mega Man Box Arts, many of which are seen in this episode.
To me the classic 'Crap Megaman' they showed first always seemed like an expression of alienation, or _Anomie._ Megaman is looking around at the city he grew up in, and he doesn't recognize it. Did he change, or did the world simply move on without him? He frowns, because he doesn't know.
+Fors Clavigera The contrast of his facial detail and his clean minimalist suit are a comment on the enduring nature of NES games with grown adults in the position of childlike interests. The alienation that you so acutely identified continues in the unnatural trees in a German expressionistic city; that city exploding from industrial peaking. The true striking beauty being of course the framing of this art within the computerized patterns reminding us that the lives we build in gaming are artificial manipulations of a business assimilating our nostalgia, our history, and even our waking moments of adulthood.
It was then that Megaman suddenly found himself into a personal oblivion. Even though he was right there, at the same exact streets he grew up on playing with the kids of the neighbourhood and his cousin, after getting home from 'nam everything was different. It was not that the city had changed at all, but Megaman himself had changed. The bitter but real cruel realization that even though he was phisically at home; he had not really returned at all, he would never trully return. Thus Megaman returned to the old Light's garage and as a final mission, with one last plasma blast to the front of the skull put himself out of his misery. 5 days later Dr.Light just remade him from with a new memory because he's a fucking robot
In Megaman 10 they missed the tie fighters and destroyers, weird looking green goblin and the skull dragon in the background. Also, in some way, the fact that megaman his holding another gun in his right hand and shooting that poor robot, like in the doom cover. I love it.
To think, Japan will never know the glory of Megaman's Glock. How is he supposed to kill everything that moves? Some kind of ludicrous cannon that transforms from his arm? Pshaw! P-SHAW I say!
I hope at one point they get the whole gang together to look the persona series boxes. /I can hear matt's joke now: "Reach out to the truth of my ass." and pat being salty in the background
One thing they didn't point out on the Megaman 10 art was the fact that center Megaman was just casually hardcore murdering a robot with the gun in his right hand mid-pose.
when the artist created the Mega Man 1 box art they weren't even given a copy of the game to play, they were told a very vague description of what Mega Man looked like
51:55 in, my favorite coworker made that sound one day when we heard something disappointing and I started to die laughing like Woolie and Matt. It was the exact same disappointment, exacerbated sigh, and this video just flooded out of my mind palace. Good times.
Star's art is pretty dope. I can't fathom how that first box art ever got approved by a Japanese company. The perspective on MM's gun and his crooked helmet irk the hell out of me. It's simple geometry, man!
This series is so nothing... and yet I love it. I love giving Matt and Woolz a chance to flex their art muscles by telling me about boxarts I never saw in my youth.
They weren't kidding around with that last image when they put in big text right next to it: "MONSTER FEATURES" because yeah, that's a pretty monstrous version of the good ole' boy megaman right there.
+Ryan Dollenmayer I assumed at first it was just an attempt to get a female in there to add more appeal or something, but she actually added quite a lot. Not sure how she'd be in their typical LPs, but for this kind of stuff I'm definitely down to see more of her.
I like how in the MegaMan 3 box art, the robot masters are colored different than the Japanese box art which is literally like 90% the same only with Wily being replaced by a shadow of I assume Doc Robot.
... I'd call the last one out on not technically being a game cover or advertisement, but I'll let it slide on grounds of being fucking horrible anyway
Man.... 10 minutes longer than the other one and there were so many box art covers I wanted to hear about, ESPECIALLY the first european cover you have on the page. The first one was so good and then somehow they devolved.
MegaMan 2 USA boxart always made me feel like I was looking at something bigger than the game, bigger than me, bigger than all of us. The universe revolved around that art. Without it being in my face or on my mind, there was no sun nor moon. Also, on the back of the box, you can find Captain Commando looking almost equally amazing and overly-Americanized in design, putting Guile's patriotism to shame, with a space monkey on his shoulder. For no reason at all.
I guess this is all your guys' Art Degrees are good for huh? Real comforting to a guy going for his Master's in Illustration ;P Make room on that couch you guys, cuz I'll be joining you in the next 2 years.
I think around the beginning of the Mega man 8 anniversary edition part I decided I might not want to draw anymore, thanks guys! You still the best LP channel ever though.
I have a fear of sickly claymation, and I'm beginning to think that last Nintendo Power is where it came from. (Was MAD magazines a thing back then? Maybe they were playing at MAD)
41:30 The blast behind the charged Buster is series tradition in instruction booklets. Because all of Mega Man glows while charging and it transfers through his arm. It was the visual language in comics and mango for shooty-hands...despite being a gun.
True, I've been saving that for when I got time to listen to it all, only watched like the first ten minutes. I feel I like Boxart Critique more anyways, because it's dealing with the hilarious/cool box art of entire franchises. It's a more varied experience compared to Drawing Bored, which will still be cool cause it's a Woolie/Plague combo dealing with character creation, but we'll see.
Li-Li Mandragon woolie Definitely wants her.. she's a girl (probably Bi) with short colored hair and she's nerdy woolie legit came in his shorts the entire making of this video 😂
Wily Wars screams "cereal box" to me. Like Wily's saying, "Megaman will never defeat my delicious marshmallow Robot Masters."
I would eat the fuck out of some Mega Man Cereal...
MegaO’s would be such a hit.
"His right, our left"
Woolie then proceeds to highlight the wrong hand.
I'd expect no less.
Woolie revealed during the DS2 LP that he didn't learn right from left as a child, and due to learning disparities as an adult he still gets mixed up.
+Tobias Davies it was the bloodborne one?
770megaman or that one. Regardless he revealed it during a Fromsoft LP.
Should have said port and starboard
Woolie if you're reading this, me too man
Me too
I think the silver catman head is supposed to be an oni platform

+Fors Clavigera Mhhhh
+Fors Clavigera Quite.

Someone been playing some Silent Hill.
It was then that Megaman suddenly found himself into a personal oblivion. Even though he was right there, at the same exact streets he grew up on playing with the kids of the neighbourhood and his cousin, after getting home from 'nam everything was different. To get around the design in the Archie Comics, Oil Man's scarf is constantly covering his lower face like an anime ninja.
He looked pretty badass too.
I mean, what else are you gonna do? That's like the only way you could do the character
I didn't laugh that hard for a long time as i did at Heihachi's face at 19:40 and at the final box art of misery
Those palm trees are Alolan Exeggutors.
I would totally play the fuck out of a Mega Man game where his upgrades are based off of bad box arts.
Bad Box Art Megaman, as portrayed in Street Fighter X Tekken, needs his own game.
+Jeedy Jay Hell yeah he does.
I literally, unironically spat my drink onto the floor when that Nintendo Power one came up. Jesus tap dancing Christ
It looks like someone did a little tap dance on Rush's face.
+Dr. Stein Rush looks like he's missing his jaw
Why do you UNIRONICALLY talk like that
Miyazaki's trying to stop Megaman 8's cutscenes from destroying anime. Sadly, he failed.
DOCTOR WAHWEE
+The4thSnake Mega Man 8's cutscenes were a mistake.
UniCom Those who identify as "Megaman fans", they sicken me deeply.
UniCom They're nothing but trash.
Dr. Wily: Attack, my Robot Masters!
Oil Man: Yessuh, massa! I's so wicked!
Dr. Wily: I...really need to reprogram you.
+farmzombie I think I might of watched too much Deus Ex, because I automatically read that second line in Pat's super racist Latisha impression.
+BiomasterM2 well I don kno the pacifics on thaat
i feel bad for laughing at that... k that was a lie. no i don't.
Mega Man 10's box art looks so damn amazing.
I can't believe how quickly Boxart Critique has become my favourite thing.
Megaman was a mistake
-Hayao Miyazaki, 1988
Welcome to judging by the cover... where we'll be judging "Mega Man". By the box art.
Am I the only one who wants the Best Friends to do a Let's Watch of the Mega Man animated series?
+Zanna at the least, the Gutsman's ass episode
+Arrowdodger DUH NUUUUUUUHH
+Zanna CURSE
OF THE
LION MEN
"Super-fighting robot...
*MEGA-MAN!*"
A second later and I would've been melted man
I NEED a movie based on that MegaMan 10 box art.
"The work put into the sparks going on over here? The sparking?" "SPARKING!"
Sparkman? No?
In Megaman 10 they missed the tie fighters and destroyers, weird looking green goblin and the skull dragon in the background. Also, in some way, the fact that megaman his holding another gun in his right hand and shooting that poor robot, like in the doom cover. I love it.
I love how the Archie comics cover Oilman's face with a scarf, because they knew.
To think, Japan will never know the glory of Megaman's Glock. How is he supposed to kill everything that moves? Some kind of ludicrous cannon that transforms from his arm? Pshaw! P-SHAW I say!
On the US Megaman 2 box art, it's like the "MEGA MAN" and the "2" are leaping off the box to high-five each other.
I hope at one point they get the whole gang together to look the persona series boxes.
/I can hear matt's joke now: "Reach out to the truth of my ass." and pat being salty in the background
31:00 Can we talk about how The Wily Wars apparently has an MA-13 rating? (???)
ladambell We are MEGAMAN *eats dr wily*
The fact that they critiqued 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8, but not 6 really rustles my jimmies.
Came here for the European Mega Man 1 box art (as pictured in thumbnail).
Disappointed.
One thing they didn't point out on the Megaman 10 art was the fact that center Megaman was just casually hardcore murdering a robot with the gun in his right hand mid-pose.
That robot really wanted senpai to notice him.
when the artist created the Mega Man 1 box art they weren't even given a copy of the game to play, they were told a very vague description of what Mega Man looked like
We need more StarExcorcist on these videos. She's awesome!
+NOTORIOUS C.A.T. Stop talking over herrrr
No she's boring, stick to art
+NOTORIOUS C.A.T. nah, her dying to this bad art is pretty much as fun as she gets, i have seen her in Matt's streams
51:55 in, my favorite coworker made that sound one day when we heard something disappointing and I started to die laughing like Woolie and Matt. It was the exact same disappointment, exacerbated sigh, and this video just flooded out of my mind palace. Good times.
BOOTLEG SPECIAL
FEATURING VINESAUCE JOEL
DO IT NOW
my favourite part is star's horrified noises whenever they change the boxart like "ohh...." "uhhp..."
Star finally getting paid in those exposure bucks.
*Starbucks XD
Star's art is pretty dope.
I can't fathom how that first box art ever got approved by a Japanese company. The perspective on MM's gun and his crooked helmet irk the hell out of me. It's simple geometry, man!
This series is so nothing... and yet I love it. I love giving Matt and Woolz a chance to flex their art muscles by telling me about boxarts I never saw in my youth.
Wait, The Protoman on the MM10 cover is fucking Kamen Rider Eternal.
That's awesome.
They weren't kidding around with that last image when they put in big text right next to it: "MONSTER FEATURES" because yeah, that's a pretty monstrous version of the good ole' boy megaman right there.
Megaman looks like freaking Leatherface.
I like this, some background talking while I work on stuff. Stuff like podcasts and such are usually a favorite.
I get lonely, fuck off.
wanna like..conversate?
*How lewd.*
I meant us! With the offering of friendships and good tidings! :(
+Mother Rinko I'm the same way ;_; believe me
+Two II Coins How quaint.
that last one makes me feel I've sinned against some angry god.
this is an amazing video but my top conclusion to be made is just that I want more Star! Shes great
+Ryan Dollenmayer Meh.
+Ryan Dollenmayer I assumed at first it was just an attempt to get a female in there to add more appeal or something, but she actually added quite a lot. Not sure how she'd be in their typical LPs, but for this kind of stuff I'm definitely down to see more of her.
Michael Reid Some of their jokes felt forced though.
+Michael Reid but we already had Liam! she`s the most (and the only)beautiful female member of the zaibatsu!
rIV3J Shes a member?
It looks like Mega Man is trying to take a 💩
+SupaNintendoGirl hahah but only one tiny turd comes out
+Tim Seymor lmfao clearly the artist's vision
Yoga class?
+Tim Seymor That is the WORST!
Chocolate icecream?
I have never laughed so hard at a UA-cam video as I did at the Nintendo Power picture at the end of this.
49:23-51:58 Think you're slick, I see you're game. Bald Bull think he foolin us with that Dr. Wily disguise
+Felteair Fuck me, that's literally Bald Bull...
Archie Comic's version of Oil Man was Black with Red lips, but the scarf always covered his face. They rewrote him as a ninja, which was pretty hype.
13:25 I guess Blue Eyes White Dragon had a job before Seto Kaiba showed up.
"Shut Up Mega Man 7!" I swear that had me dead
I miss these 2 and this segment 😢
I like how in the MegaMan 3 box art, the robot masters are colored different than the Japanese box art which is literally like 90% the same only with Wily being replaced by a shadow of I assume Doc Robot.
Megaman 3: My eyes are up here Megaman
... I'd call the last one out on not technically being a game cover or advertisement, but I'll let it slide on grounds of being fucking horrible anyway
Yo it's Star Exorcist, she does cool art things.
I'm so glad that this is an ongoing series lol
Man.... 10 minutes longer than the other one and there were so many box art covers I wanted to hear about, ESPECIALLY the first european cover you have on the page. The first one was so good and then somehow they devolved.
I just realized the box art in the thumbnail doesn't even get touched on. I hope you have a part 2 lined up.
+Jeedy Jay Well let's be frank. They only touched on like 1/10th of Megaman's boxart. There's some pretty strange ones they didn't look at.
AirYosukekun Well, yes, but not including the one you use in the video thumbnail is a noticeable oversight.
Jeedy Jay I know .3. Just mean there're others that deserved a look see
MegaMan 2 USA boxart always made me feel like I was looking at something bigger than the game, bigger than me, bigger than all of us.
For no reason at all.
where EU box art from Mega Man 1 ? It is awesome! and there is a second version for EU Mega Man 2 art!
Star Exorcist's art is so good
The best thing about the video was Star going "I feel unclean!"
i'm enjoying this series like a billion times more than i thought it would
just fucking Star going "...ohhh" at the last mega man image
10:27 - it's SparkMan
I went to see Star's art and it's pretty super good.
Bit of a Bryan lee O'malley rip off
+Pluto Bone have you ever actually seen bryan omalley art?
How could you miss how awkward Mega Man is holding his pistol on the MM2 cover? :D
Megaman needs more Cataracts in his eyes.
+Dalon Young he should learn how to read first
This comment made me legitimately laugh out loud.
Aww man I love this series, I showed off some of the fancy art knowledge about the way your eyes move on the image to impress my friends!
He's fighting Spark Man in the MM3 boxart you scrubs.
On Matt's stream I was a bit annoyed by Star (maybe she was a bit drunk I dunno) but this totally turned it around for me.
She seems pretty cool.
I guess this is all your guys' Art Degrees are good for huh? Real comforting to a guy going for his Master's in Illustration ;P Make room on that couch you guys, cuz I'll be joining you in the next 2 years.
Draw a Rule 63 of the Super Beat Friends for them to notice you.
What is this..."r63" of which you speak?
+AfroMetalMizu Gender-swap.
***** Meh. No thanks ;P
+AfroMetalMizu Fine.
33:08 I fucking loved Matt's subtle little laugh, hahaha
The cat-man-head thing on the European MM2 art must be one of those floating head platforms in Air Man's stage?
I think around the beginning of the Mega man 8 anniversary edition part I decided I might not want to draw anymore, thanks guys! You still the best LP channel ever though.
Mega Man 10 was the first to give him an actual target to shoot
This was hilarious, please do more!
I love little people!
+Shiggy Diggy word.
+Shiggy Diggy This man speaks the truth.
12:00 Megaman was a mistake.
Those who identify as 'gamers', they sicken me deeply.
I have a fear of sickly claymation, and I'm beginning to think that last Nintendo Power is where it came from. (Was MAD magazines a thing back then? Maybe they were playing at MAD)
that european mega man 2 cover looks like some obscure david bowie movie
The Venn diagram of things I love that this series creates is a perfect circle.
Hells yeah, time to break out my highbrow again!
Hello and welcome back to judging by the cover
+Chumbawumba Well meme'd.
They didn’t do Mega Man 6 because it’s actually good.
The last image and the commentary killed me! My gut was in pain from the laughter!
"hello and welcome to an extended edition of Judging by the Cover!"
I think the box art for Mega Man 10 was amazing! It really captures that feeling of "I'm so awesome" when you do well at video games.
41:30 The blast behind the charged Buster is series tradition in instruction booklets. Because all of Mega Man glows while charging and it transfers through his arm. It was the visual language in comics and mango for shooty-hands...despite being a gun.
I really love this series so far, glad you are doing it, and quite a fun guest
No joke, best new videos being done on the page.
+Kamikaze Keeg I'm between this and Drawing Bored. I need more from Drawing Bored before I make a decision.
47:40 _PERFECT_ fucking time for that musical cue!
"Welcome back to judging by the cover."
This is my starting introduction to the franchise!! I can't wait to see more😁
I like Star, she's hot female Woolie without dreads
Li-Li Mandragon woolie Definitely wants her.. she's a girl (probably Bi) with short colored hair and she's nerdy woolie legit came in his shorts the entire making of this video 😂
Frank Martinez I would
Loving these boxart critique vids. Keep 'em coming!
A whole hour of talking about Smegmaman? How exquisite~
+Skeleton-chan You can't do this
Really like all these new series you are doing. I missed your non vidya content from back in the day.
This is cool. Want to see more of those boxart dissections.
Star floored me with the Mega Man belt buckle comment!
"Light has changed"
Add Star Exorcist as the fifth Super Best Friend.
So that NA cover for Wily Wars looks super legit
And thus, another unofficial 5th best friend was born. I think we're up to twelve now.
