- This a Southern Pacific EMD SD40T-2 built in 1:48 scale (O gauge) in Lego bricks. It's powered with 3-18650 Li-ion batteries driving an MRC Loco Genie wireless DCC receiver which in turn powers 2 Lego Power Functions L motors, one for each truck. Via the Loco Genie, it has sound and light control.
That engine is something else. The lights, the awesome sound profile. Makes the Lego City train 60197 look kind of dull next to it (although I own and like that one a lot).

Amazing moc, how did you connect the Lego motors to the MRC Loco Genie. I always enjoy the engineering aspect of building mocs
Thanks! For the motor connection I cut a PF extension cable and spliced it onto the Loco Genie motor output wires so the PF L motors are unmodified. Given how the PF connectors are stackable, both motors are connected to the same connector, I just had to orient the gears so both motors pulled in the same direction.
Actually, the SP had oscillating or flashing ditch lights on their wide-cab GE locomotives (their Dash 9's and AC4400CW's).

Is Loco Genie no longer being made? A quick search yielded no results, even on ebay. GREAT work, and it really closes the gap between lego "toys" and model railroading!
Thanks! You can still buy the Loco Genie from XLSystems, I believe he is the guy who engineered it for MRC here: xlsystemsdcc.com/product/xl-wireless-diesel-sound-module/. Since this video was posted though, I've moved on to Airwire + Tsunami2 decoders for all my locos. I sold the surplus Loco Genies I had.

Fantastic construction! My son (9) and me are also big fans of Lego Locomotive MOCs and were recently building a shunting locomotive with automated couplings and motorized bogies based on L-motors.
May we ask you how exactly the engine concept was realized in your model? And what about the great sound - what product is this? Simply amazing! 😀👍
The two L motors drive the trucks independently, one motor with shaft horizontal driving thru a pair of bevel gears to the vertical shaft which in turn drives the end axles of each bogie via bevel gears within the truck frame. The sound comes from a 28mm round speaker connected directly to the MRC Diesel Loco Genie where the motors are controlled and the sounds generated. MRC no longer sells the Loco Genie but a company called XLSystems, who designed it, sells it online at their website.

I am sure I could but have no plans to. That is an SD40, this is an SD40T-2 - different length, cooling system, trucks and lots of other details. I don't like ES44's.

I designed it initially in Studio (available at BrickLink.com) but made many changes while building it, pretty much how any build goes.

Thanks. Actually, as soon as they became available I bought ten sets of the BMR Kadee couplers but for my layout they were an instant failure. They are very sensitive to any vertical irregularities in the track - the transitions from flat to grade and back caused them to separate - if they were F style couplers they'd have worked. I since switched all my magnetic couplers to the super magnets offered by Studly trains: lifelites.com/train-coupler-retail

I don't use turntables to connect the trucks, they pivot on the vertical drive axle which allows the trucks to pitch slightly which is needed on my layout to deal with the transitions at the grades. I use a dab of petroleum jelly on the axles to reduce the friction there. I don't have any wheels on the middle axles, they're not visible anyway.

i know its a year ago vid, but to fix the magnet issue, buy accouple Katie couplers from BMR
I've tried their Kadee's, although I love the look and function, on my layout they separate vertically due to the change in grade climbing the hill on my layout so I've gone with the LifeLites Studly Trains magnets that are a lot stronger than the original Lego magnets. On a heavy train though, I add a 10mm Dia x 2mm thick round magnet between the magnetic couplers.

That's actually equal to L scale
My models are in 1:48 scale which is equal to O scale. Per this site, L-gauge is 1:40 scale: l-gauge.org/wiki/index.php/Welcome_to_L-Gauge. Actual Lego track, though, is closer to 1:38 scale.

It says it's a sound decoder but it does include motor and light control as well.

No I don't. Since I modified a few parts to make it work and since it is really quite a chore to make useable instructions, I don't see that happening. Brick Model Railroader recently released instructions to build their version of an SD40-2 here: brickmodelrailroader.com/ and it would not be too hard to build a T-2 version from those instructions.

I've moved on from the Loco Genie to an Airwire wireless receiver connected to a SoundTraxx Tsunami 2 decoder. Much more flexible with sounds and motor control, but much more expensive too.
