The most complete player I've seen in my life. Very underrated but man this guy in his prime was at the level of the best of the best in the history of the game
He's proud Maradona rared him so highly and if he had went to napoli him in midfield then giving the ball to Maradona and you have careca Brazilian striker that was top class finisher world class.. napoli would have been unbelievable what a team that could have been
In my opinion, Matthäus is the greatest German footballer. I put him above Beckenbauer, Müller. Matthäus was such a lethal and tough player, extremely efficient.
Sadly Franz Beckenbauer past away in friday RIP Kaiser, but i agree he Lothar Matthäus was bu far the Most dominant German, because Franz trusted hım ,so they are both great
@@OssissindwestpolenLothar Matthäus was the greatest variable, box to box central midfielder in my lifetime....and in older age he was together with Matthias Sammer the best Libero of the Bundesliga. Lothar was such a self confident Captain....it made a big difference. He would always step up....but know when to let Andreas Brehme do the penalty. He was incredibly fast, physically like a defender, with a world class far distance shooting technique in which he used his entire body....and damn he made some stunning goals from afar. He had that gift to make elegant, long distance passes like a Pirlo but also did the fast and short de Bruyne/Madrid/Kroos type double passes. His greatest strength thru was how he could play world class in literally any position....from Libero....to defensive 6....to the Gerrard, Ballack, Lampard, Xabi Alonso type 8....even as playmaker or 10 like he did under Trapattoni in Inter Milan....he was world class elite winning the title at a time tbe Seria A wad the absolute top league in Europe. In my opinion he is the Christiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi of box to box 8s. He was simply the best player I have seen iny lifetime. He won "Bundesliga Player of the Year" being 38 years old as freaking Libero (Sweeper) after a hardcore injury. Unforgettable his volley goal at the Leverkusen game...(look up Matthäus Leverkusen volley goal here on UA-cam)
True. But Bernd Schuster had to leave Die Mannschaft because he refused to participate in an international match against Albania due to his son's birth!!! Crazy right? The organization did not want him to be there for his son's birth and gave him all types of hell. Schuster skipped the game anyway and when he got back, the media made a big deal out of the situation (along with Die Mannschaft!). This particular situation eroded the trust Schuster had with the national team and the issues he had with Paul Brietner and coach Derwall escalated his desire to leave the national team. If, and this is a big if, Franz Beckenbauer was Die Mannschaft manager during the time Schuster played, none of this would have ever happened. Beckenbauer wouldn't had any problem at all with Schuster attending his son's birth and skipping a match against Albania! Unfortunately for Schuster, Der Kaiser did not get the job until 1984; which by then Schuster had just left the team (or was on his way out the door!).
Schuster is honestly one of the weirdest players I can think of. He could've been one of the best German players ever. But it almost feels like he wanted to upset as many fanbases as possible: went from Barça, to Real Madrid and to Atletico. Later he went to Bayer Leverkusen and he started his career in Cologne. And finally everything that happened with the national team.
IM FROM ARGENTINA.. I WAS 12 IN 90´S WORLD CUP.. IN THAT MOMENT I DIDNT VALUE MATTHAUS BECAUSE FELT SO FAR AWAY HIS FIGURE.. NOW I FEEL SO CLOSE OF HIM,, AND THE UWFULL JULY 8 IN ROME SEEMS JUST A BAD DREAM.. LOTTAR IS IN MY 11 BEST OF ALL TIME, AS PLAYER AND AS A PERSON.. the greatest words ever spoken in football-history! "i had the passion for football, i had the motivation for football, and dont forget... the LOVE for football!" if you lose that, football becomes like regular work for you, and then you just cant be good!
He was on the top even in his 40“s. No footballer had such a longevity. To me he was the best because all the other „super“ player disappeared much earlier.
He'd make my all time 11... Buffon, Maldini, baresi, Nesta, Thuram, Zidane, Maradona, Matheus, cr7, van Basten, Messi... I never saw Pele so it's hard for me to include him
I watched the 99 UEFA final in 2003. I was 11 yo . And I thought "damn! This guy is a shirt 10 and a back(he was really a sweeper but i didnt knew that) and captain at the same time? Crazy.. he must be good." Really liked the match. That United then faced Palmeiras at the interclubes in tokyo. Nice times as a kid...
He is one the greatest, Lothar was the first footballer I knew as a kid. Loved his playing style. But let me (as a German) say, the documentary focuses purely on the positive sides (career wise and also personal) and Lothars comments on Italian vs German attitude are just BS 😅
You can be sure matthaus is shocked by how bad germany is today as a team He was an example of what german footballers were Football intelligence is something lacking in todays football, as they rid white players from the game, and they think just because blacks can run, that they can play football like white males could. No, football requires intelligence that most black players do not have, and thats why you will hear previous generations of players saying they are better then todays footballers, they understood how important intelligence was in football, even though most fans ignore it Matthaus must be shocked at how poorly germany is doing today, when he was an example of what german footballers were.

Kroos isn’t close at all. He just happened to play with Croatiano and Ramos for many years, that’s why he won many titles. But Kroos’ play isn’t too efficient let alone dynamic. The best German midfielders after Matthäus are Ballack and Schweinsteiger.

You're seriously comparing one of the best players of all time, a world footballer and the absolute leading player of Europe's best team of the 80s (Inter Milan, together with AC Milan) and a world-class club like Bayern Munich, an absolute idol from two decades who played football at world-class level for 20 years, with Mats Hummels? I'm sorry to say it, but there's no better way to make an idiot of yourself and make a public fool of yourself than this and show that you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Sometimes it's better to just shut up if you have no idea.

He was the Arnold Schwarzenegger of football.
Most complete footballer in history.. Able to do just about everything.. And absolute cannons for legs

He was Maradona's greatest rival throughout the 80's and up until 1990

A REAL LEADER OF MEN
What a player. Player that’s often forgotten but make no mistake, he’s up there with the very best
That 1990 West Germany squad were incredible. So mentally strong.
Totally opposite to this new German generation, full of talent but very soft mentality
The best player of 1990 world cup .
Agreed. He was amazing! He and England’s Paul Gascoigne were the two standout players in that tournament. IMO.
Gascoigne.
Gasccoigne, Voller, Brehme

I wonder how many don't get that joke.
Care to explain what you mean by this?

Why do we Anglophones pronounce his last name as 'Matt-ay-uss' doesn't an umlaut over an 'au' dictate that it should be pronounced as 'Matt-oy-uss'?
The name is Lothar Matthäus. Details matter. You are welcome.
how is this so hard? it's either Matthäus or Matthaeus. Ä and A is not the same letter
In America and Southern America...the ä doesn't exist....or isn't used. So they write Mattheus....😂
