Aniplex, who owned the series' western distribution rights, approached ADV Films to produce an English dub. Aniplex gave the ADV Films staff very few constraints when writing the new version, the only rules were "don't change the character names (including the ghosts); don't change the way the ghosts are slain (a reference to Japanese folklore) and, finally, don't change the core meaning of each episode".
The English dub deviates significantly from the original script. While preserving the basic plot structure and storyline the new script revolved around topical pop-culture references, politically incorrect gags and fourth wall breaking jokes about the original show's low animation quality, anime cliches, and poor lip-sync.
the fact they literally just threw whatever they wanted into this dub and it STILL made a comprehensible storyline, albeit about sex, is so impressive.

The conditions that the company gave to ADV were to keep the basic plot details and the characters' names, and also the spells to defeat the ghosts. The original anime went from 2000 to 2001, but the ADV dub was from the mid 2000s.

What i learned from watching this series is that schools in Japan go till very late
It's not that it goes until late, it's rather the fact that the sun rises early in Japan and therefore sets also early.

How this was the actual dub is beyond me but this is hilarious
This is what happens when you tell someone...especially us Americans.... "do whatever you want!"
The official original Japanese dub was a flop. So when the American dub studio got it, they were given a few rules: dont change the names, dont change how the ghosts are defeated, do whatever you want with the rest.
@@whatwhat98 Well however they did it, the result was absolutely glorious. It just makes me a bit sad to know that something like this is really a one off and no studio would be given the go ahead to do this kind of thing again thanks to modern cultural trends from the giant babies who can't handle jokes.

From what I understand, this series didn't do very well in Japan, so the American dubbing team were given permission to do whatever they wanted in order to make it more popular. And man, did they.
@@keithsdrawer the US team was given 2 restrictions on the whole thing. 1. No change in any names. 2. No change in storyline. They were allowed to do anything what they wanted.
