I am pretty sure that it stays golden for awhile. Its chemically changing the outside of the coin which means that it stays there if you don't sand it off

I have couple of pennies electroplated with real gold.
You can replace sodium hydroxide with zinc sulfate, which is much safer.

Are quarters made of copper or zinc?
Penny's are zinc clad in copper. A quarter has an inner core that is pure copper and the outer covering is copper mixed with nickel.
