You guys nailed it. Many people buy and drive cars for the attention they give you. Then when that new (insert car name here) is 6-9 months old, and the newest hotness hit the dealer floors,.... No one pays them attention, and they move to the next car. The trick is to drive a classic car, that is rare or unique, that will always give you attention.
My experience, at least here in America, the hate towards rooftop tents comes from "fake overlanders." There's almost no real over landing here in America like there is in other parts of the world. So most "overlanders" here set up their vehicles with tents, full kitchen and storage systems, all kinds of tools and equipment and fuel and water cans attached on racks on the outside, multiple navigation and com systems, etc. And then daily drive it to their office job in the city and take it to a campground once a year 🤣 so there's a stigma behind the tents because typically they're a "poser" accessory That being said, I love rooftop tents. They're super convenient when you actually use them often
RTT - Lots of people who go 'overland' love them - but if you are doing the 'hard stuff' - it really raises your center of gravity and can really impact your stability off-road. The increased height also causes issues with clearance when you are off-road and off-camber in the trees. These are the big reasons I choose to sleep in a tent when go off-road!
Somebody much smarter than me once described going into debt as "spending money you don't have to buy stuff you don't need to impress people you don't know". makes you think about it.
Over 20 years ago, a coworker of mine made a wrong turn and ended up in the intake for the Woodward Dream Cruise (huge car event / parade in Michigan). Once they got started, there was no way to get out, as the side roads are all closed. So these two middle-aged ladies rolled their windows down, waved the crowds, and cruised along... in a 2 year old, beige, Buick Century!
One big argument I've heard against rooftop tents is that if you've spent the evening drinking and you go try and climb up to sleep, you might be too drunk to make it up the ladder. And even if you do make it up the ladder in a few hours, you're going to need to come down the ladder again to take care of business. If you're not steady on your feet, those ladders are going to be dangerous. They also look dumb.
@SwapBlogRU I wasn't hating on rooftop tents, I've camped in 2 different ones, on about 6 occasions. They're weren't awful, a solid C+ as a tent, a C- for actual sleeping in, C- for ease of set-up, and A+ for looking dumb. MCM is the perfect place for calling out expensive(loud goat bleat here) eqpt. Cheers! Stop our campfire for a burger and a drink anytime Brother
I watched D4A's excellent explanation of the Porsche 6 stroke, and that makes sense - but I reckon Marty's is pretty accurate too and it works for older models.
BMW's naming was good and straightforward 316i, for instance. You knew what it was. 3 series 1.6 litres petrol injection. 318i, same but 1.8 litres and so on with a d as opposed to i for diesel. Now, it will be a 2.0 litres engine, but with different levels of tune and so on.
#19 here, the roof top tents always scare me that you'll roll-over and fall off in the middle of the night. But I have an 'estate'/'station wagon' so I can sleep in the back As for the fank, "Size when fully extended."

I worked at ZF a German brand assembling diffs for Holdens and transmission for Ford. The assembly plant was here in South Australia and the boxes(crates) of parts were mostly from Thailand... It's all about costs as we were all casual employed and sent home early each day once Holden met their daily build quota
Rooftop tents seems like such a weird idea to me. I've done a lot of camping in my life, specifically car camping, and we've always done a tent. It seems like a great idea to get the tent off the ground, because the ground is cold & hard. So you'd think a rooftop tent would be a great idea... but then I just look at the cost of it, and the space it takes up... Like... for us, we'd have to leave it on our car 24/7, because there's just not enough space in the garage for it. And the cost. I think the last time I looked, they were a few grand? For the money, it seems like you could get a small popup trailer tent or ultra-light towable, and for the most part be good? Unless you need to tow more than one thing? And there in lies the problem. It's too expensive for what it is, both in storage space, and in physical monetary cost for most people... which means it's bougie garbage, for bougie people to feel like tough outdoorsmen, when they should have just rented a camper.
The new Porsche 6 stroke has a new crank design that has gears in it, these causes an increased stroke length, this allows the new intake valves at the bottom end of cylinder to open and allow more fuel/air in, there is still burnt gases in there (Moog's correct) these will still ignite and the 2nd ignition will burn the unused fuel and new fuel/air and have a "cleaner" exhaust gas output in the exhaust stoke.
Woohoo! Glad the package made it 👍 I recommend the monster munch. Oh yeah...and I opened the multipacks to make them a bit smaller and fit in the box 😄 Also, 100x internet points for pronouncing my surname correctly. Cheers, Tom
I prefer having a vehicle with a cabin like a pathfinder by Nissan or a Wagovan by Honda which I used for Car Camping all the time up on lakes north of Toronto. Just put the back seats down and blow up an air mattress.. you can avoid being wet, you can leave radio on low without killing battery.. etc.. I wouldn't have as much as others if I were to go car camping again... Those fridges are a game changer... An old Toyota 4x4 van could have a fridge installed from factory.
I have a ladder on frame, part time 4x4. I also have a VW with the same 4Motion all wheel drive system. My VW can get across drainage ditches on a 45 degree angle. My 4x4, in low range, gets crossed up and has to be winched across or reversed out. Don't underestimate that AWD system. Just keep the wheels spinning until something finds some grip, it'll keep going until it bottoms out.

I saw a good video explanation of the Porche 6 stroke somewhere, but now I forgot where. I think the idea was that it was halfway between a 4 stroke and a 2 stroke or something? Where your exhaust is down around the piston skirt? The idea was you get more power over the entire cycle, even though two of the strokes would clearly have less power because the air-fuel has partially combusted hydrocarbons...

37:44 i think to add on to this about the after market industry being killed off. I think a big issue with it will be the scarcity of cars to modify. Who is going to restore a byd seal in 20 years? As time goes on cars get crashed or taken off the road for other reasons. In 20 years there might not be any good iconic cars anymore. And i think that is why we see so many things like the hellcat coming out. They will be the last of the performance car icons. Fossil fuels last hoorah.

Just like any car, the old GTRs can get fast, with some mods. But stock. Just wasn't that fast. Dollar for dollar, the vette was faster. The thing owed me under $25k AUD, including the Webers and all that jazz.

Rooftop tent ……. Problem is getting out for a number 1 in the middle of the night after a belly full of beer. A “P” bottle no good as when it’s cold missing is an issue !
I became a convert to rooftop campers the day I saw a crocodile 30 kilometres from the nearest water. And yes I now know they can climb, but buddy, I'm looking at you down there on the ground.
Rooftop tents seem cool but they are very expensive and have to live on your vehicle if you dont have space to store it. I think they are for a lifestyle camper and not a hobbyist. That being said, there's an absolute legend out there somewhere with one on an NSX
hard top roof top tents are the pinnacle of camping for people who don't want to tow. Means you can still camp in comfort in places camper trailers and caravans can't get. And so quick to put up. And you can fit solar on top. win win win win win
Nope it does have a second intake. There are intake holes in the cylinder. The piston travels further down on the second combustion stroke exposing the intake holes in cylinder. You have TDC1 and TDC2 as well as BDC1 and Bdc2.
Hrm, I had no idea where was actual *hate* about rooftop tents, but honestly I kind of don't see a use-case for me compared to ...any other sort of easy-up tent. Unless I suppose being off the ground is a priority but level parking is abundant? I think an immediate drawback of those is they're really big to install and I'd be carrying the thing around all the time for it to make high center of gravity and bad aero and be subject to weathering just cause I'd need help putting it on and taking it off. :) (Also I happen to be of a size where I could just put a camp mattress on the folded down back seat of my old F150 extended cab and sleep in there no problem, if needed, so, 'camper.' :) ) Anyway, I think those rooftop tents are neat, but, do you really need that? I figure not. If anything I think I'd prefer one of those old slide-in-the-truck bed campers if I wanted to be posh-ish. :)
I met Graham at the brissie 4x4 show and they said they would like to but their management couldn't see much value in it so they are unlikely to happen.
I might have to have a talk to the two green snakes that live in my backyard. I don't think they have a hunting license for the mice they kill and eat.
17:51 They explained that one of the 2 "decrompressions" (not sure if it was the first or the second) sends the piston further where there are vents to let I guess some of the air or exhaust out so it can combust again... or something like that. There is a recent video on the Carwow channel that went into it.
For me Porsche is about where it tops out. I drive a POS to allow me a bike for fun, but I still feel a level of enthusiast connection with (some) porsche owners, the ones who are just car guys that have money. I'm sure there are Lambos, Ferraris etc which are fantastic driving machines but in my experience the owners usually let the cars down by treating them solely as status symbols and basically just acting like tossers.
Or to put it another way (some) Porsche drivers boast about how far they've driven their Porsche. Ferrari owners boast about how few miles they have on their odometer.
One of those lesser 4x4 channels was in Colorado somewhat recently and everyone was surprised they were sleeping exposed on swags, asking them if they weren't afraid of bears, as if bears can't climb ladders up into a roof top tent. I don't know what your stigma is against them in Australia, but they're definitely the thing almost everyone in North America wants. I don't really understand that. Yes, they're marginally more convenient than setting up a ground tent, but not by a lot if you have a decent tent. They take up a lot of space, they're heavy, they raise your centre of gravity, they're expensive, they massively increase drag and your fuel usage on the highways you inevitably are taking to get to your camping destination, and climbing a ladder to get in and out of bed in the middle of the night sucks. I'm not going to rib anyone for wanting one. I just don't think they're worth the money. Especially on a truck, where all you need is cheap used hard shell canopy and an air mattress.

Just like any car, the old GTRs can get fast, with some mods. But stock. Just wasn't that fast. Dollar for dollar, the vette was faster. The thing owed me under $25k AUD, including the Webers and all that jazz.
"Size when fully extended" :D :D :D
There are so many archaic laws that never get followed, but I can say with certainty that I set hundreds of mouse traps in CA and never felt like I was at risk of being fined lol
I'm a couple of years younger than the boys but I feel the winds of change as well. I'm not sure if it's the natural progression of getting older or if we are in the throws of a massive change.
All I know is my daughter and son will never know what it's like to go to a petrol station. I love my tesla it's too practical but having grown up with jdm heros it makes me a little sad.
Getting philosophical about roof top tents
Amusingly...being a car since I could drive, I've developed into...a car guy who doesn't want to spend money on cars. I love cars, I don't buy into the "waste my entire life savings on stuff" approach to them though. My buddies who aren't car guys have owned 3-4x as many vehicle as I have.
Viewer #27 here, Californian.

Size when fully extended wins !!
Volkswagen do names well ok. Multivan - does multiple things, Beetle looks - like one, Golf- luggage space for one set of clubs?
speaking of the right to repair stuff, I'm a member of my local repair cafe, it's an organisation with members all around the world who rock up once a month to repair people's stuff for free, teach people how to do repairs, and promote sustainability. Real grassroots stuff, it's a brilliant thing to be involved with. I highly recommend checking them out if there's one in your area, or if you're interested in starting up your own you can contact them and they'll help you figure out how to get started
oh, and my chosen deposit for the fank bank is "PUMP FOR JOY"
Ive got a rooftop tent on my up! My kids love it 🎉🎉 is so easy i love it.
Rooftop tent ……. Problem is getting out for a number 1 in the middle of the night after a belly full of beer. A “P” bottle no good as when it’s cold missing is an issue
!
Tinfoil: I thought similar, of suzuki's 7 year warranty, a few years back. Cheap little cars + 7 year warranty makes them accessible to most customers
roof top tents are heavy so makes the car more top heavy, not great for 4x4ing but good for touring
I became a convert to rooftop campers the day I saw a crocodile 30 kilometres from the nearest water.
And yes I now know they can climb, but buddy, I'm looking at you down there on the ground.
The strokes are different lengths and the longer ones uncover ports in the cylinder wall, so it's more like a 4+2 stroke engine than a 6 stroke.
Funniest episode ever the camping one bloody loved it
Rooftop tents seem cool but they are very expensive and have to live on your vehicle if you dont have space to store it. I think they are for a lifestyle camper and not a hobbyist. That being said, there's an absolute legend out there somewhere with one on an NSX
Fank bucket? No. Fank spittoon? No. Why not a Fank Bank :)
I wouldn't sleep in the dirt in Wyoming with rattlesnake an near a river I would hard side camper pull behind trailer
hard top roof top tents are the pinnacle of camping for people who don't want to tow. Means you can still camp in comfort in places camper trailers and caravans can't get. And so quick to put up. And you can fit solar on top. win win win win win
Car meet question: cybertruck
(Also I happen to be of a size where I could just put a camp mattress on the folded down back seat of my old F150 extended cab and sleep in there no problem, if needed, so, 'camper.' :) ) Anyway, I think those rooftop tents are neat, but, do you really need that? I figure not. If anything I think I'd prefer one of those old slide-in-the-truck bed campers if I wanted to be posh-ish. :)
Why does Australian Marty understand America's Electoral College more than many Americans I know?
I submitted the Sweet Meat Squash fank! First time fank submission, so happy to be featured!
Can the 6 stroke be diesel? Like a panamera, which should be 4wd not awd, I think. Porches still do Dakar.
"Tool Lube" proudly coming to you from sunny South Africa!
“SIZE WHEN FULLY EXTENDED.” Sure winner 🤩
Size when fully extended for sure. XD
It'd be cool to see yall on a trip with 4wd 24/7
I met Graham at the brissie 4x4 show and they said they would like to but their management couldn't see much value in it so they are unlikely to happen.
Yeah like a 5 road and beach adventure trip like they had on skid factory. Amazing nissan patrol on there i think

They may have been the channel that rejected them at around 8:30 mark
@@J-P88 big corps i guess. the other channels are boring anyway. hehe
"Size when fully extended" has my vote, so original and epic xD
EDIT: Extra credits to the legend who actually physically sent a fank!
this frothed me right up
For me Porsche is about where it tops out.
Size when fully extended is the best I’ve ever seen. Send that man a T-shirt, I’ll pay for it if I have to
Marty in Canadia.
Fank of the week vote: “SIZE WHEN FULLY EXTENDED.”
27:41 What can that $500,000 car do that the $5-50,000 can't do? In more times they do less than the cheaper version.
29:54 That is also why things like Gerrymander are quite a thing, to get the maximum amount of votes and cut other areas up to minimise the vote of a population type.
33:00 Missed the link to the video.
