I think Arin put it best in an earlier Grumps episode: he loves this franchise (Sonic) and wants it to do well, that’s why he’s so heavily critical of so many aspects of these games. He wants these games to succeed, and he hates these half-baked shitty parts of these games cause he knows that at their core they could be amazing but they just end up being shit. It can go for any game, really. You know? If you love a game, and you want it to succeed, you’ll be heavily critical and not sugarcoating anything but still respectable. Sometimes though, folk get too frustrated with something that they gotta get angry and say somethings they might regret. Anyways, hey! Cool comp, Sbassbear folk!
Hmm I agree with the spirit of this, like I think Arin loves Sonic the character and the overall design baked into the lore. But I dont think the core game play of sonic is really his thing. Like from OG sonic to any of the 3D sonics (of course), he just hates the mechanics at their core. The ring life system, the going fast but constantly having to slow down (or memorize the course), the boss battles, all of it is just not his preference. So the spite and fury comes half from what you're saying about his love of the design/disappointment in lazy execution, but its also what most people see: pure hatred for this game play at its core lol.
backing you up on this: i believe he said in a different video (can't remember which atm) that he shows his love through his criticism. only someone with a deep love for a franchise could be so critical and invested in it

Just think back to their Sonic Colors Ultimate playthrough, in which he was bored, because the game wasn't glitching, and he also pointed out that he purposely bought the version he'd heard was the most buggy. He doesn't want Sonic to succeed. He wants to laugh at Sonic's failures. He also said that he didn't want to watch the Sonic movie because he heard it was good. Even the music he claims to love from Sonic Adventure 2 he still calls "butt rock," which was a term he and Barry coined years ago to make fun of Sonic music. I love Arin, and I love Game Grumps, but I do not for a second believe Arin is a fan of Sonic. He just loves to laugh when Sonic flops, and hell, he even nitpicks when Sonic succeeds. :p

You make it abundantly clear that at the very least, you do not enjoy his games. He nitpicked and complained about Sonic Mania, a quintessential game for fans and a return to the form he claims he enjoys, and then wants to get frustrated that fans don't appreciate his attitude toward literally every single Sonic game featured on the channel. Like you said, I'm a fan of Game Grumps, otherwise I wouldn't be here watching the comps. But Arin's hipster attitude, not just towards Sonic but literally everything that is enjoyed by a wide audience, is so frustrating. A solid example of this is when he said he loved the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy, but "not for the same reasons everyone else likes it". He then proceeds to say he actually hates the trilogy, and when asked to justify that by Dan his only response was "uhhh it's too funny". Epitome of hipster energy.
5:20 To be 100% legit and honest even if I know this game is bullshit. Arin technically hit the rail in between the characters arms and wasn’t even close with Knuckles which is the hit box character in charge that needs to hit the rail. In all honesty...Arin just fucked up there as he usually do.
same thing when he didn't know how to use the hover wisp in sonic colors. he was frustrated with how he kept falling down that one portion of the level when if he just did the light speed dash along the ring trails it would have literally just placed him where he needed to be

Dan laughing at him and/or getting upset with him just makes it all that much better. "Arin.." lol. Dan is super funny too. Love both of them. Been watching for sooo long. When Arin was Egoraptor, but man it feels like that was a totally diff person back then lol. This is the real Arin. Suzy is great too. She always seems like a genuine sweetheart.
