As the election draws nearer, Conservative peer Daniel Finkelstein wonders if Rishi Sunak’s predecessor Liz Truss could lose her safe seat with a 26,195 majority “after everything that happened” when she was prime minister.

One of the ways society has improved, unequivocally for the better, is that it’s now expected that Dads spend more time with their kids. As a dad, I am profoundly glad of this. As someone who isn’t PM I would fight tooth and nail to protect that. And even at 5 my daughter says and thinks things that give me pause and makes me a better, less cynical person.
We all know that a PM is always on call, but frankly, the societal expectation, thankfully, is that a PM absolutely should make time for their family, if for no other reason than to keep themselves sane.
It’s win-win: genuinely, there is no argument around this. The PM is always on call, obviously.

Agreed - but first the political class must learn lessons from recent history including this election, grow up and take the public seriously.
The greater Labour's majority turns out to be, the more I really hope for it to be on a strong turnout. My fear is that, thanks to the serious damage politicians have caused to public trust in them, too many folk will simply not bother voting.

Elections are special because of the equal worth of the votes. There is no difference between a road sweeper and a billionaire in finance; one person one vote. What ever the result , it should respected and celebrated as an expression of democracy . The people are always right but sometimes some politicians are wrong.

It's intriguing; when you scrutinize someone closely, their true character is revealed. Consider the revelations about Liz, Boris, and Wishy. In the end, it turns out Kier is indeed someone who genuinely embodies a realistic, decent work ethic and family values.

To be honest I think the night of the 4th/5th July will see many a Tory Icon fall. I live in a Tory area and I believe they have underestimated how much anger there is over many issues. People see the concept of the "shy tory" and the danger of the " super majority" for the nonsense that it is. Desperate people clutching at straws and only deluding themselves! From my 96 year old mother to her great grandchildren they all want them out! Not only that but suffer as well.

Truss would have had a better chance if she’d shown some regret, contrition and admitted to mistakes. Kwasi Kwarteng, for all his faults, has admitted that his time in office was full of huge errors which damaged the country.

A great podcast. Almost worth suffering this dreadful election to be able to enjoy it. Great episode and Danny gets man of the match, having been isolated on the right wing quite often.
