I think people are being pretty harsh to Chaol after this book. I thought his loyalty was always pretty clear: every choice he made was to protect Dorian, even the kind of crappy ones. It seemed to me that most of the conflict between him and Dorian specifically was caused by the lack of communication he imposed to protect Dorian, so that Dorian was not complicit in the rebel dealings and sending Celaena away for her own protection. Even the magic thing, Chaol didn't want to know the details so he couldn't ever give Dorian away, and his whole fight to return magic was so Dorian might be protected. Dorian jumped to the conclusion that Chaol feared him, and even when Chaol first approached him about the towers, he made assumptions of Chaol's mindset without giving him a chance to talk. Chaol was willing this ENTIRE book to make sacrifices and screw himself over if it meant putting Dorian or Celaena first. People criticize him for not picking a side, but it seemed clear to me that Dorian and the people of Adarlan was always his side. Celaena didn't exactly make it clear when she left what she as Aelin meant for the kingdom. She just dropped that bomb and left. Even Dorian thought she might be back to kill him. So what loyalty does Chaol owe her or Aedion and his movement exactly? It seemed to me he did a lot for Celaena and the rebels, and only got cold feet when the ordinary citizens of Adarlan were in the line of fire. What happened to Celaena and Aedion's people was awful, but I don't think it makes Chaol an indecisive person to want to limit the destruction the rebellion movement will cause to the man who deserves it. Just because Celaena's people were slaughtered doesn't make it any more acceptable to slaughter the Adarlan people, and Aedion doesn't sound as concerned about that. This is getting rambley now, but hopefully I've made a semi-coherent point.
Am i the only one who disliked aelin and liked chaol character in queen of shadows. I mean aelin was stubborn and annoying but chaol character became likeable in that book
I'm rooting for Rowan and Celaena to be together. I know they are friends right now, but I hope it grows into something more. They just get each other. Poor Dorian.... LOVE this book so much!
READ THE ASSASSINS BLADE BECAUSE ALL THE FEELS... LIKE LITERALLY ALL OF THEM.... also I think I sat in shock for a while after what happened to Dorian at the end of this book. I didn't know how to cope with life... Mannnnnnnnnn... And also somehow I shipped Rowan and Celaena but in like a "life partners" kind of way, not necessarily anything particularly romantic. i don't know it played with my feelings a lot... A LOT.
We're on the same boat about the Aelin and Rowan ship, I looked at them as comrades. I just love Chaol and I don't know why, but I'm afraid something will change in book 4 Queen of Shadows😂😖
I hated Sorcha at first because I was Team Dorian but then I read all these Rowan and Aelin chapters and I just wanted Rowan and Aelin to be together. At the end, I was finally happy with Sorcha being with Dorrian, but then that 'scene' happened and I was sad cuz Dorrian was finally happy. Also, I like Chaol but I'm not sure if I'll be happy with Chaoleana anymore
The only thing that kept me from appreciating Manon more is the fact that I was so impatient while reading her POV because I wanted more Rowan!! but se is such a deep and interesting character that it blows my mind.
I feel you right there man like I just finished the book and am going to have to reread it because the manor parts I kinda skimmed so I could get to more of that lovely Rowan And Aelin
I was travelling by train when Celaena found out that the King massacred all the slaves in Endovier and Calaculla. I swear I was standing then my knees kept buckling and there were tears in my eyes. The GUILT and GRIEF that Celaena felt, I could feel them on every level. This book made me cry so much. It was beautiful. And btw, I am Team Celaena. She doesn't need any guy in the end.
I don't know how spoilery this is so I'll be vague - the specific part where a ~~certain character~~ decides to get tattooed as well is one of my favorite parts. It was moving (especially the reason behind it and what the tattoos were of) and ugh I just loved it!
Rachel Michelle i hated them as well, I am german and for some reasons I wasnt able to understand these chapters. I had no problems with reading the chapters of Celeana, Chaol, Dorian, Rowan or even Sorscha. But I had so many problems with these damn witch chapters. At the end of the 4th chapter I thought: "hopefully she will die soon" At the end they werent that bad
Glad someone else enjoyed manon's chapters as much as I did, I found it so interesting and I loved abraxos and the relationships between manon/asterin and manon/abraxos, I loved that by the end of the book you could tell that manon was questioning her humanity and ahh every little thing about this book was perfection
I was really looking forward to your review and i was not let down!!! This book was sooo fantastical, well written and well constructed. Manon was perfection for me, super interesting and complex. And i still love Chaol!!! We, as readers, often complain how characters react very unrealistic when they find out some other character's true "nature", so i think his growth throughout the book was beautiful. He finds out that the girl he loves is the enemy of the kingdom he spend his life serving and obeying. He is just one of the people, one of the guys who is being manipulate by the king. I don't know, i really like his relationship with Celaena, the powerful confident queen and the captain of the guard who thinks little of himself, you know. AND ROWAN AND CELAENA NEED TO KEEP A PLATONIC BEAUTIFUL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A MAN AND A WOMAN, LIKE PLEASE!!! sorry for such a long nonsense commentary, but i needed to fangirl!!!
You're right, the world building was THE best!!! Character growth, too! Wasn't too satisfied with how Dorian turned out to be, though. Dorian and Sorscha, urgh.
I enjoyed heir of fire and the world building is just insane!! :D Its so interesting to be introduced to these new characters and I find myself really liking Aedion as he turned out to be a rooting for Aelin even though he was keeping up the facade that he is a traitor. Also, I liked the strong friendship Celaena and Rowan had forged. I think that Dorian showed a lot of growth in this book and his mastering of his magic. I know that Chaol had difficulties in picking a side but I can understand his struggles. Besides he did make a decision who to support in the end and I think I would always be team chaol and Celaena because to have a real romance, hardships and problems will occur in he meantime. I HAVE FAITH IN THEM!!
I can see why people are switching to team rowan...but i feel that chaol has to through his indecisiveness in this book for him to see a clearer picture and set his priorities straight. Im still rooting for celaena and chaol getting together in the end...
I pronounce Aelin like "ey-linn"(ey as in "hey" without the H). And Sorscha is like Sor-sha :) I liked this book but I didn't love it. Some parts were really slow and sometimes Celaena was like a depressing black hole. Yes times are tough Celaena, but come on! Get a grip! I loved her and Rowan's relationship as well, especially whenever he was taking care of her, and that scene when he tattooed her at the end. I think that really symbolises Celaena moving on and letting go of some of the guilt and pain she had been carrying around. I loved the growth of her magic and how she stood up to Maeve at the end! I understand that Manon will become important but I found her kind of boring to be honest. Also not really a fan of Aedion, I read the whole book and I still don't really know who he is. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series though!
Chaol always annoyed me. I've always loved Dorian more though. After reading Heir of fire, I don't really ship anyone with Celeana. Dorian moved on, Chaol was mega annoying. I just love Celeana so much and want her to be happy. I cried so much times. When their was mention of Nehemia, when their was mention of Sam and during the flashbacks of her family. The end killed me though. Dorian, no, Oh Gawshh no, they need to free him, and they must free Aieden. Rowan was definitely my fav character!
I didn't really like the witch chapters but if she crosses paths with Celaena then I'll be excited. I love Rowan! I kept wanting him with Celaena but I understand why they're just friends. *whispers* I think I love Rowan more than Chaol....
Literally everything u said was exactly how i was thinking. From being slightly annoyed with Choal and lovinngggg Manon and that whole witch story line and LOVING the relationship between Rowan and Celaena. The only thing i was missing a bit was the whole ancestry of the fae like who comes from who because people had a few different names and it all got jumbled up in my mind. I hope the author makes a linage thing like she made the map and pronunciation guide.
I'm so glad someone agrees with me about the witch chapters! They were my favorite chapters in the book! I thought everything was so fascinating and that storyline really captured my attention.
I love this review it was exactly my thoughts! One of my favorite parts about this book was how realistic and important Celena's grieving process was. And that one chapter where she was taken over into her memories by the princes (when she like accepts that she needs to be Aelin) made me cry so hard with Nehemia and Sam and her parents and it was so beautiful and god I just love this book so much
I also really liked the witch chapters!! Manon is just badass amazing. And her bond with Abraxos brought tears to my eyes. And then the whole Keelie and Petrah scene absolutely killed me ahh
It's a little scary how you took the words right out my mouth. I loved the Manon chapters and also Rowan is too perfect for words, can't wait for Sarah J Maas' new book!
I devoured heir of fire because it's incredible - I agree with you with the iron witch chapters they're awesome. Sarah is an insanely good writer - can not express enough how much I love these books!
I agree with you 100% it's like you were speaking my mind! I was surprised a lot of people didn't like Manon and Sorscha. Seriously though, what a fantastic book!!!
I was in shock the whole second half of the book! It was so magnificent....I just finished the book an hour ago and my head is still throbbing....the scene with Celaena and Maeve.....man...and with the Valg princes. Nope. My head is still spinning. What a book!
LOVED the witch chapters and can't wait to see more! So much character growth and world building and GAH I don't even know what else to say because there's just so much!!
How do you always manage to capture ALL of my feelings for a book in your reviews??!!!!! This book really was EVERYTHING!!! Are you excited to see how Celaena faces a particular person to get a particular thing in the next book like I am (sorry for the vagueness I don't want to spoil anyone)?
Gah I need September to get here!!! I just finished reading Heir of Fire this past weekend and Celaena/Rowan JESUS their relationship/friendship just...ugh I'm still not over it right now because it was just AMAZING!!!
Thought the first half of this book dragged and I was so confused at the beginning of it, but the second half really picked up so glad I finished it. I agree with you about liking the training part though, especially Manon's Wyver--that was so funny trying to get Asbraxos (Sp?) to fly. The confrontation with Aunt Maeve was great and I absolutely loved that while Chaol is running for his life, he stops to get Celaena's dog, Fleetwood! I bet Dorian will be fighting Aelin in a future book when Dorian is turned into one of the King's creepy creatures.
I just read this and came back to finally watch this video and I agree with everything you said. I LOVE manon and rowan so much!! Now onto Queen of Shadows oh my god.
This book is spectacular!!! My most favorite book out of the three. I staYed up until 5AM just to finish it and I was left so super satisfied! Loved it!!
Great discussion, I agree with everything! I finished Heir of Fire just yesterday and oh the feels!! What happened with Dorian broke me! And Aedion and Rowan are both so great I love them.
I filmed a chat about this book as well but then ended up deciding on not uploading it but OH MY GOSH YOU SAID BASICALLY EVERYTHING THAT I THOUGHT ! -LOVE celeana and Rowan -Really really like Manon as well AND ABAROX ! -I actually didn't like sorcha (even though I still wanted Dorian to be happy) but liked how her ending brought Dorian to the point of finally making a move -and yeah I got quite annoyed with Choal in this book too this book just gave me so many feels ! How are we suppose to wait a year for the next one !? 😫
I officially have no idea who end game will be. Not Dorian. He's a mess like I am very worried for him. Maybe not Chaol because of that "mate" talk Celeana and Rowan had. I love Rowan. Like love. But idk.
I agree a million times over! Fantastic discussion/review! Can't believe we have to wait a whole year for the next one.. Sniffsniff... Love this series! :)
Loved this book so much! Especially the friendship between Celeana and Rowan =) Really fantastic book. And you should definitely read the Assassins Blade it will give you even more insight to other parts in the continent. How are we going to wait ANOTHER YEAR for the next one?!?!
I loved this book too :D I thought it was a little slow going in the beginning, but it picked up so much about halfway through, and those last 100 pages!! Holllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. I can't even.
Gah Rowan and Celaena's brotp for lifeeee! Guhh Dorian my feels, I feel you girl. Just finished this the other day so that's why I'm commenting now which is what I feel many people are doing. :D
I know most people are all like team Chaol or team Dorian, but ROWAN, omigosh. He's so cool. And so wise. And so... EVERYTHING. He's the only one who's mentally as strong as she is. Choal tends to be boring at times, and Dorian is cool, but he's like a cool bestie Aelin should work magic with. Rowan is the only one, imho, who is intellectually and physically compatible with Aelin. I'm just going into the 4th book and I'm already biting nails! Ps: Manon. OMFG. I'm totally crushing on that chick. I can't believe how much I love this dark character. Kudos to Saraj J Maas!
You'll love Assassin's Blade! I totally fell in love with Sam's character, and it really makes you marvel at how positive she is (well, at least until Heir of Fire, but she comes back around) after all that she has been through. There are so many allusions in the series to things that happened in The Assassin's Blade, it's pretty cool how everything ties into each other. Back to Heir of Fire, I was so confused as to whether or not Celaena was full fae or demi fae. I thought she was full fae at the end of Crown of Midnight, but then she goes to the demi fae camp to train to be allowed to enter into the fae city, so I assumed she was demi fae and that her mother was human and her father was fae since Elena was from her fathers side of the family and she was half fae. But then I found out her mother was related to Maeve, and then I got confused.
I loved Manon and the witches too! Celaena and Manon would be a golden duo I swear, it's gonna be great. And yes poor Dorian! I love Dorian, and I loved Sorscha too, and then it was just like... Yeah... No... Okay... *cries* And Chaol was pretty annoying, yeah, I abandoned him as favourite character, Rowan is my new favourite now, haha. And Aedion is second, I loooooved him! Yeah, I'm so excited, ALL THE FEELS. When is fall 2015. I NEED IT NOW.
I just finished the book and came here lol. I have to say, SJM doesn't do a great job of dropping hints. I felt like I was a step ahead of the story too many times, and I'm normally awful at that--solving mysteries before the characters do. I totally predicted that Aedion was actually a good guy. He was name-dropped in Crown of Midnight, and just from a writing/storytelling standpoint, there's no way a relative of Celaena's could be working for the king without having ulterior motives. I also saw Sorscha's death coming pretty clearly. As the pages went by, I realized her character wasn't developed enough and she was going to go. These are just the two biggest things. Dorian and Aedion's capture came out of nowhere though. I was freaking out and had to walk away and scream before I finished the book.
I was trying to contain my fan girl & space the books out but now I've seen this & I NEED to read the rest of the books! Your review was so infectious lol oh well I don't need to work... Or anything!
I was on Kat's channel, and I saw that all of the comments are either rooting for Celorian or Chaolaena, but then I discovered that there are so many people here shipping Rowaena!!! I never actually developed an relationship for either Chaol or Dorian, cuz they're not better than Sam... (sob) And Rowan showed up! And everything with the "To whatever end", just, ahhhhh! I might finally found someone who's better than Sam!
I had read this whole series (with all of the books that are out), But they are really good. This is my favorite book in the series too. And also I finish this book on the 14th. Four days before you had read the book. It's super good, I really like it… And I beat my cousin Hollie to this series. She is reading this book right now. So it's hard for me to talk about with her...
I know this book is 2 years old but could you check out a novel by Annabel Pitcher called 'Ketchup Clouds'? It would be cool to see what you think. The book revolves around a 15 year old girl who, to keep her identity, calls herself Zoe, and claims to live on 1 Fiction Road, somewhere near Bath, England. The story is told in written letters to a murderer on Death Row, whom she believes is the only person she can confide in, after admitting to killing a boy three months previously. :)
I'm sorry but "looking booty" has just entered into my lexicon. Yay! I'm # 15 of 24 now on the hold list at the library. I mean, I have to buy it but I wanna read it now.
RIGHT?! Poor Dorian, totally got screwed over! ;< + You need to read The Assassin's Blade. It is just as mind-blowing as the rest of Celaena's story >_
YOU STOLE ALL MY THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS BOOK OUT OF MY HEAD :D How do you do that ? But srsly, I am kind of troubled, because of something I noticed. Please tell me I'm wrong, but to me there was quite often mentioned how much Celaena ate and ate and... Also Rowan knew from the start, she was someone else's. You get what that rambling is about? Pleaaaaaaase tell me I'm completely wrong and paranoid!
For some reason I didn't really enjoy the Chapters about witches. I felt like it dragged but it's probably cause I was more focused on Celaena and her friends that I wanted to keep following their lives. I felt like crying after reading the book and the fact that I have to wait another year for the next one sucks :'(
I also found it difficult for me to start the book, I was dragging myself for the few chapters mainly because there is a new environment being shown and new characters introduced. But as I went deeper, Gods(like what Sarah would always write) I'm glad I found this series. And I just finished this book and it's so amazing! You should read it already😊
Ok first Celaena is pronounced Cell-a(like the letter a)-nah not Selena like Selena Gomez .... secondly you pronounce Maeve like May(like the month)-ve ... and you pronounce Aelin like ee-lin :) ... and I loved the Manon chapters too :)
I think people are being pretty harsh to Chaol after this book. I thought his loyalty was always pretty clear: every choice he made was to protect Dorian, even the kind of crappy ones. Rachel Michelle I DO TOO BUT I ALSO DONT I AM SO CONFUSED
PeruseProject Good thing there are 3 more books for us to decide ;D
Rachel Michelle I completely agree! I was team Chaol 100% but now that Rowan's come along...
Alex Chrispin exactly!
READ THE ASSASSINS BLADE BECAUSE ALL THE FEELS... LIKE LITERALLY ALL OF THEM.... also I think I sat in shock for a while after what happened to Dorian at the end of this book. I didn't know how to cope with life... Mannnnnnnnnn...

biancareads I feel you on that

I'm so glad to see that you enjoyed the Witch Chapters caused I loved them. And was surprised that others didnt like them
Others didn't like them?? HOW CAN THEY NOT!? They were fantastic! O.o
Idah Sanderson I know right! they were amazing. I cant wait to read more about them in the coming books
I want Manon to meet Celaena and become friends!
Omg yes can you imagine the epic badassness between them
They would be un-beatable!

I needed to google what these places were
I don't know how spoilery this is so I'll be vague - the specific part where a ~~certain character~~ decides to get tattooed as well is one of my favorite parts. It was moving (especially the reason behind it and what the tattoos were of) and ugh I just loved it!
I feel like Dorian has a shitty life ahead of him in the next few books.
Was I the only one who kept rereading just the Celena and Rowan chapters?
K Craig yesssssss
thank god im not the only one!
Ph my god i did that even in Queen of Shadows
I'm way too obsessed. Right now this will be the 6th time I've read queen of shadows. Its too long until the 5th book comes out
YEP
i hated those witch chapters lol
Me too!
Dyan Tan
i thought they were kind of irrelevant and found myself zoning out reading them
Ugh me too I couldn't care less about them tbh
Rachel Michelle i hated them as well, I am german and for some reasons I wasnt able to understand these chapters. doesn't he die? (omg sorry i haevnt finished the second boom and i think i've been spoiled unless its not true)
I'm hoping they will get together in the end, too! in CoM celaena said "I'll always pick you", that was a promise! TEAM CHAOLAENA
I'm sorry but that "I love you" at the end just made me cry. Oh gosh. I want the next book!!

The Dorian part genuinely just hurt me so much. Ugh I have so many feelings for him.

I loved Abraxos. Hated Chaol.
Finally, someone else who hates Chaol.
-LOVE celeana and Rowan
-Really really like Manon as well AND ABAROX !
-I actually didn't like sorcha (even though I still wanted Dorian to be happy) but liked how her ending brought Dorian to the point of finally making a move
-and yeah I got quite annoyed with Choal in this book too
this book just gave me so many feels ! How are we suppose to wait a year for the next one !? 😫
This book was everything and thank you for that link for the HARDCOVER copy! *DIES*
I officially have no idea who end game will be.
Not Dorian. He's a mess like I am very worried for him.
Maybe not Chaol because of that "mate" talk Celeana and Rowan had.
I love Rowan. Like love. But idk.
I agree a million times over! Fantastic discussion/review! Can't believe we have to wait a whole year for the next one.. Sniffsniff... Love this series! :)
NightmareOnBookstreet ME TOOO
Loved this book so much! Especially the friendship between Celeana and Rowan =) Really fantastic book. And you should definitely read the Assassins Blade it will give you even more insight to other parts in the continent.
How are we going to wait ANOTHER YEAR for the next one?!?!
I loved this book too :D I thought it was a little slow going in the beginning, but it picked up so much about halfway through, and those last 100 pages!! Holllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. I can't even.
I freaking love this book! It's so epic and all the feels invoked in me..... Not just the fourth book, I need the whole series out now lol
I love Celaena and Rowan's friendship!
Girlfriend! You must MUST read the Assassin's Blade! I don't really like novellas but this BLEW MY MIND!!! So so good!
Yeah! I thought the novellas even rivaled book one. Sam Cortland. That's all I gotta say.
Totally agree!
Rewetting this in preparation for Queen of Shadows in two weeks. AHHHH. I'm super excited!!!
I couldn't stop looking at the Bastille poster.
I love Rowan and Celaena
IM SO GLAD SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS WHY I LIKED MANON'S CHAPTERS SO MUCH
I was on Kat's channel, and I saw that all of the comments are either rooting for Celorian or Chaolaena, but then I discovered that there are so many people here shipping Rowaena!!!
I never actually developed an relationship for either Chaol or Dorian, cuz they're not better than Sam... (sob) And Rowan showed up! And everything with the "To whatever end", just, ahhhhh! I might finally found someone who's better than Sam!
i just love how we have the same opinions about this book omg 💙💙💙
I loved Manon and the witch chapters so much!!! shes so badass
PERFECTION. THIS BOOK WAS PERFECTION. And I almost agree with all of your thoughts!! Specially Chaol and Aedion and Rowan
Great review by the way! I sooo agree with everything! You're one of my fave booktubers!
if you haven't read the assassin's blade then you haven't felt the true pain you've gone through reading all books
SO EXCITED!
OH, and I have a dilemma here,
DO I BUY THE SEVEN REALMS SERIES OR THE LUMETERE CHRONICLES?! I CAN ONLY BUY ONE.
Zhixuan Tan OH MY GOD I DONT KNOW CUZ BOTH SO AWESOME
I can't stay for this sadly because I haven't read the book, but I bet this video was great (:
You should have read The Assassin's Blade before Heir of Fire... So many references aaaahhh!!!!
Ikr?! I LOVED Assassins Blade soooo much!!!!! OMGs!! The feels!
I had a theory that what happened with Sorcha would happen since I learned of her realationship with Dorian. Though I did hoped I was wrong😭
I'm sorry but "looking booty" has just entered into my lexicon.
Yay! I'm # 15 of 24 now on the hold list at the library. I mean, I have to buy it but I wanna read it now.
after read Heir Of Fire, I really scream out loud.
Just.... amazing.
I JUST FINISHED AND I CAN NOW WATCH THIS VIDEOOOOOOOO
RIGHT?! Poor Dorian, totally got screwed over! ;<
+ You need to read The Assassin's Blade.
I always said Ay-lin and Ay-dee-in
same
I don't care what happens I JUST WANT DORIAN TO BE OKAY
For some reason I didn't really enjoy the Chapters about witches. I felt like it dragged but it's probably cause I was more focused on Celaena and her friends that I wanted to keep following their lives.
I felt like crying after reading the book and the fact that I have to wait another year for the next one sucks :'(
I really want to read The Throne of Glass series, I need to!
Waiting, waiting and endless waiting. How will we all survive until book four?
NOOOOO!!!! I'm #7 on the waiting list at the library. WHYYYYYYY?!?!?!?!?
REAGAN, are you still team Chaol?
I have struggled for months to get through this book. I hate it. The first two were fabulous. I'm stuck. I hope it gets better
I also found it difficult for me to start the book, I was dragging myself for the few chapters mainly because there is a new environment being shown and new characters introduced. But as I went deeper, Gods(like what Sarah would always write) I'm glad I found this series. And I just finished this book and it's so amazing! You should read it already😊
im about to start queen of shadows finaly so im waching this to refresh my memory lol
Loved this review agree 100% with everything and actually this review helped me calm down and put my feelings in perspective after reading cx
The Assassin's Blade is the most painful thing ever
Assassin's blade is PERFECTION!
Agreed 100% with everything you said. Such a great book!
The next one's out in another year?!?!? Well I guess less than that now, But still! urggh it's gonna to be a long wait :/
It's perfectly coherent to me!!
I LOVED MANON
After hearing your review on this book I had to subscribe lol
Iv heard great things about this series!! Would you recommend it to someone who is just getting into fantasy?
Ok first Celaena is pronounced Cell-a(like the letter a)-nah not Selena like Selena Gomez .... secondly you pronounce Maeve like May(like the month)-ve ... and you pronounce Aelin like ee-lin :) ... and I loved the Manon chapters too :)
I'm reading this book right now and I skip every Manon chapter. Soooooooo boringgg
If you could recommend one fantasy book and or series what would it be?
am I the only one who is still shipping dorian and celeana ???
ROWANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
pronunciation here is really driving me nuts xD
THE MANON CHAPTERS WERE HELLA BORING
