  • In this video I show you how to get amazing looking patina on your Apple Leather Case in the color Saddle Brown. This is applying to all the Saddle Brown cases but primarily the iPhone 12 cases as they dont age like the old models did. That is why we are helping the patina a bit :). Using fine sandpapaer and leather nurishment/balm.

    Thank you! After watching this I used sand paper on the black case and it looks amazing! I didn’t use any oil, and it looks and feels like suede with blue undertones. Black was not my first choice but I found one on Amazon on sale for less than $25 so I grabbed it. My first choice would’ve been the saddle brown but I couldn’t see paying $60. Now I’m so glad I did get the black one!

    Can I use the acetone instead of sandpaper? I want to get it down to the actual surface of the leather and then let it patina with time. Although, I noticed you use sandpaper in all your videos and I wanted to make sure why, whether for convenience or a nicer finish or what be it. I want a smooth leather when I’m finished and that’s why I’ll be using acetone as to not dig into the leather, but I’m worried I may miss a few spots and it will patina unevenly. Thank you!

    I'm planning to use a 220 grit sandpaper with coconut oil on my golden brown iphone case - do you think it's a good idea?

    • @KimBertilsson
      @KimBertilsson  2 роки тому

      I think it is abit too coarse sandpaper. 320 grit or 400 is better in my opinion. 220 might cut/scratch the leather too deep.
      Also if the coconut oil is a liquid be very carefull applying it. Very easy to apply too much and the leather will feel greasy/get very dark. What I use is more of a paste which is easier to apply without saturating the leather 😊. Hope this helps!

If I’m using alcohol to rub away the coating, will this case age the same way of normal use like after the coating is remove like all previous model? The texture and color look the same as the old cases so if I’m rubbing away the coating, and using it normally, will it be the same or they use completely different leather? Sorry to say I don’t have that perticular case so can’t say, but should be fine abit darker tho. I’m currently testing the way the Apple Saddle brown patinas natually to compare. Will post a video when the patina has formed on the case :). Should not be too long now!

      Should be 😊, it is a very fine sand paper and will take a while to get through the coating. But usable!

    I was kind of hoping he was going to rub some of the coffee into the 12 cases, this will give me a nice dark stain. 😆 (Actually, I kind of wonder if I lightly sandpaper that...then add a little Dark roast into my phone I'd get a darker color. (Seems too simple....so I won't try it.) But, yeah my 12 PM Saddle Brown case is STILL pretty much it's original color - except in some spots along edges since early Nov.

      Hehe yea that would have been something!
      I actually have used super strong brew to tone leather. Works best if the leather has a natural color. Also makes it smell of both coffee and leather which, in my mind, is just awesome!!

    You destroyed a leather case. Why not just use leather balm and time?

      Unfortunatly I did not like the way it get patina on it’s own. Was only focused on the edges 🙁.

    If a leather product is not vegetably tanned, I don't want it anywhere near me! Unnatural coating like the one Apple use, kills the leather so to speak. The downside is, you can only get natural colours with veg tanning, you can't get colourful colors but I choose veg tanned over colorful but dead leather

    • @KimBertilsson
      @KimBertilsson  2 роки тому

      I totaly agree! Veg tan is the way to go. Some tannerys can get some what vibrant colors with veg tanned. I use a leather called Pueblo from Badalassi Carlo tannery. If you want to see some stuff I made with it my Instagram is in the about page on my UA-cam channel.

      The newer cases only get patina on the edges, I posted a video some days ago when I try alco wipes. In that video I also show how a case looks that has just been used for around a year. The patina it gets is not as beautiful as the older cases got.

    why are leather-people so obsessed with patinas? i think it makes it look old and gross ...

    • @KimBertilsson

      For me personally I had the same opinion you do but the more I grew to know leather and working with it my opinion changed.
      I want the items I use to last as long as possible, quality leather in a decent thickness will last very long. But with that long lasting quality wear and tear will show, leather is rather soft after all.
      So for a leather item to last years of being used every day it will age/patina. So most people who like leather and lasting quality kinda have to like the patina. And after years you may get emotionally attached to your beloved wallet or bag. And the patina is the result of those years you and the item spent in each others service!
      Not sure if this is just rambleing but I did my best to put my thought on it in words 😊. Thanks for the question!
