The flag you didn’t recognise in the second image is the flag of the Belarusian republic, also known as the opposition flag. It was used in WW1 then was used as the state flag in the 90s when the Soviets collapsed, and it’s now become a resistance symbol against Lukashenko and the modern Belarus government (Who use this flag 🇧🇾)
Eu officially recognised 2020 belarus election as fraudulent in which officially lucashenko won with 80% of total votes. In belarus it's really uncommon to find people protesting as they'd rather fix the problem on the personal level rather than on the national level, but this results caused massive response. People marched on the streets of Minsk and formed solidarity chains, the flag was everywhere you go. It seemed that lucashenko would give up peacefully but he didn't. People were sent to SIZO (basically a mini-prison for suspected criminals), there police would beat up people to plead guilty or if they're lucky enough, release after a week. Fun fact: my mom is now in prison for 3 years for sticking this exact flag onto the door. They way the won the case is: 1. Make it a group case with 3 somewhat unrelated people 2. Use a fake advocate to convince the oldest person from the group that the best way to get less time is to plead guilty and NOT disclose that to "co-criminals" 3. Somehow extrapolate guilty claim of one person to the whole group. 4. (Prepared before) Select a judge that has a clear case of ruling and/or use corruption. And 3 people are now in prison. I would -leave- never leave the motherland!
The photo is iconic, yes. But where in the world that was, I bet a lot of people outside the US wouldn't know that. I myself hadn't even heard of Iwojima before this video.
I’m an Aussie and I knew it was Iwo Jima, though I guess we were a fair bit more involved in the pacific theatre than the UK was. That said, while I knew Iwo Jima was part of Japan, and I was pretty sure it was a tiny island somewhere in the pacific, I’ve no idea if I’d have got anywhere close to the actual location…
@@gormster oh yeah for sure i definitely wouldnt have found the precise location of the photo. Im surprised that jack didnt think about the US being heavily involved in the pacific theater, although like you said the UK wasnt nearly as active there as the US
It's fairly excusable that he didn't recognize the picture. It is completely inexcusable that he guessed Dunkirk lol, famously one of the earlier land battles Britain was involved in during the war, before the U.S. even joined. Not to mention that the most famous thing about Dunkirk was that it was a _retreat_ and it wouldn't really make much sense for anyone on the Allied side to be erecting a flag anywhere.

Surprised Jack didn't actually know what year JFK's assassination was being such a big doctor who fan. It was the day before the show first aired, and nobody watched it because of the assassination.
It was so jarring when Jack didn't immediately recognize the iconic Iwo Jima photo, since as an American I have seen that photo in literally every history textbook I've ever opened. Of course it makes sense that the photo isn't as famous in the UK but damn was that jarring.
The photo is iconic but the place name not. I associate that photo a lot with the lyrics of the US anthem, the whole visual of a bombed warfield but the US flag is still waving in the debris.
Yes, do it again! That was fun. It was so interesting to see those iconic images of the Marines on Iwo Jima and Kennedy in Dallas, but from a young Brit's perspective, if that makes any sense.

I'd love to see him do the same with history
It was interesting seeing all these events because in school, I haven't learned about none of these, only heard on the internet. Can't wait for more history related content
Since Google Street View lets you view past versions of it, you should try and find a GeoGuessr clone that uses that, could be interesting. Imagine having to find a place that doesn’t exist anymore.
My great-uncle witnessed the Iwo Jima flag going up. He was on an aircraft carrier, and he saw it from a distance, through binoculars. He lived to be 101 years old.
