I'm from Boston and a Red Sox fan. What Buckner had to endure after making that error was down right a shameful reflection on our society and yes Red Sox fans. Without him the Sox never would have made the World Series and Sox fans should have felt proud that he was part of the organization. He was a great player who deserved a better fate. His daughter actually appeared in an episode of Curb as an airplane stewardess. I give David credit for writing this piece r making Billy Buck a hero
Being a cubs fan I liked Bill Buckner but as many know Steve Bartman was the cubs version of Bill in 86 and I don’t blame either for what happened to them and it’s an equal disgrace over here in Chicago as over there in Boston for what those two had to go through, and both games are similar, both teams fucked up it wasn’t only 1 person, and somebody had to be a scape goat
It was not all that soft of a hit and down the line. Had he not been playing so deep he would have had to dive and get up in time to throw out Mookie Wilson, one of the fastest men in major league baseball in his prime.
Even as a young Yankee fan back then, I found it atrocious how Buckner was treated because of that error. His entire great career was erased by that moment. One of the saddest moments in baseball!
Like Bartman with alleged" Cub fans".Billy Buck's beloved in Chicago who played hard on 2 bad legs and was dumped by Dallas Green. We got Ecks but Billy Buck was missed.

@@lloydychristmas5077 Yeah, but a Mets fan who knows that the series wasn't really blown by Buckner, himself. He's showing BB some respect and redemption.
We aren't all like that in Boston. I never held 86 against Buck. And this moment makes me tear up a bit everytime I see it. "Nice catch, Bill". Indeed.
You can always tell a guy that knows zilch about baseball when he only knows Billy Buck for the error in 86. The guy was a scrappy, gutsy and all out player. You couldn't strike him out and couldn't walk him. Probably my all time favorite Cubby and we missed him when he left Chicago.
Considering how deep he was playing if he fields that ground ball Mookie beats him to first. Fat fuck Stanley was nowhere near the bag. Three straight singles. Passed ball. Top if off second baseman was not backing up first and allowed Knight to score. Buckner won in the end. Beautiful loving wife. Great family. Pimp house. Put his kids through college by signing autographs. Boston didn't deserve him.
True, true, completely agree that a guy who only knows Buck for Game 6 in '86 knows zilch and is a zero. I mean, shouldn't Buck better be known for his 1980 NL batting title?
The whole thing unraveled before the roller up the line. Would he have gotten Mookie out even if he fielded the ball? And the Sox did have a three run lead the following night.
Michael Brantley I’d be embarrassed to reveal myself if I were a simpleton, but I guess even those who see complex/nuanced things as black and white have a voice these days.
When I saw what was happening I lost it. To think a baby might "get through Buckner". And this ending after the whole episode is about how he cant catch. One of the greatest scenes in tv history
Larry mentioned in an interview with Rich Eisen recently how there was a different shot of the scene where the baby slipped past Buckner and he didn't catch it and it was hilarious, but he just couldn't put that version on TV.

The man had a borderline hall of fame career and played through numerous injuries.
