    Matt, just find the equation of the regression line and substitute each value in. You can find the equation using the Median-Median Method or the Least Square Method.

    In the first example that you showed, I got the exact values for x=5.1 and for x=9.3: when x=5.1, y=3.55 ; when x=9.3, y=5.65. If you're wondering how I got those values, here's how: I found the equation of the line to be y=(1/2)x+1.

    • @formdoggie5
      @formdoggie5 9 років тому +6

      The problem with that is in the fact that, while you did a great job is discovering the root equation that allows you to find exact values, the question directs you to ESTIMATE to find your solution. While the above will certainly assist you in increasing accuracy, for testing purposes, giving an exact answer will likely yield an incorrect mark as it represents a failure to follow instruction.
      Example: putting y = 3.55 instead of say, y = 3.6 or 3.5
      Just a heads up as it's definitely something to watch out for, and when in doubt, ask your instructor for clarity.

    I figure that interpolating is estimating between two poles.

    Thank you, i am really good at math and one of the top students in my class at math but stuff about graphs really confused me and i didnt know what it was and how it works but now i do,thanks, this helped me a lot. i watched 3 different vids to explain but this one was very simple and made sense,great work.

    This stuff is really easy if you have a computer. For the first one, using a Python interpreter after finding the equation (y=x/2+1), I found that if x=4, then y=3. If x=5.1, then y=3.55. If x=9.3, then y=5.65. For the second one, the equation (y=x*175) means that when x is 2 minutes, y is 350 meters, and when y is 1000 meters, x is about 5.7 minutes.

    Hey there, I'm sitting my Physics EMPA on Monday, where I may have to extrapolate a graph. But what if the line of best fit does not go through the origin? How would I find out values out of the scale to the left of the graph i.e. if the y intercept is negative?

    Hi, can we use interpolation for measuring a KPI scorecard
    Want to use this for both increasing and decreasing thresholds? (Strecth and target values) then interpolating to a scale like 80-100
    Both for reduction KPIs (e.g interruption duration) and increasing KPIs (e.g market share)

    so what is the point of extrapolation? It seems that interpolation would be more accurate because it uses the data points you already have.The more complex the graph is... the more difficult it is to "predict" how to extend the graph.
    can you give an example where extrapolation is more efficient than interpolation?thanks

    • @OoverHeaven
      @OoverHeaven 7 років тому

      Maybe if you had a graph that went from 2000-20xx which showed the amount of $/£ spent on average a year and they ask you to predict how much will be spent on average over the years 20xx +1/ 20xx+2/etc. Of course doing this implies that the trend stays the same so it is seen as inaccurate.

    • @chillagma
      @chillagma 7 років тому

      oh...I see.Interpolation would be used for the data that you do have to make an accurate assessment and extrapolation would be needed for future predictions but it would create inaccuracies because you have to assume that the trend is consistent..
