Over the years I have purchased several Alienware machines. Never had any major issues until just recently with my Aurora. PC arrived and the graphics card was not operating as expected. I rang Dell, they had me run some tests and decided that the graphics card had been damaged in transit. They then sent a technician on a 6 hour round trip to replace and test a new graphics card. Been working perfectly ever since - That is why I buy Dell.

I just bought an aurora for black Friday. My friend said the same thing as you. Been using alienware for 8 years no problems except for one time his gpu was bad, technician was there the following day and it was fixed. Best review of a pre-built system I’ve seen. Very informative and you went beyond just the technical breakdown but also mentioned the after purchase service from dell for hardware issues. Given the fact that I don’t have the time I used to have to build and troubleshoot my computers, this is a big selling point for me. I just need them to work and if something fails I don’t want to have to mess with sending components off for warranty. And by comparison to other pre-built a that don’t have on site service this makes the purchase a no brained for me.

Yeah unfortunately a lot of these companies that own gaming lineups stopped giving the option of maxing out their normal home or business PCs. Like you are stuck with only professional gpus on the business side, and they won’t let you go above 50-60tier nvidia gpus on their home systems. They only let you get the highest end components on their gaming lineups and sometime they force you to buy the highest tier item just to get the 80 or 90 tier gpu or the unlocked i9 rather than a locked i7 or i9. Sucks because you used to be able to just get the standard atx tower from their home lineup and upgrade to the fastest i7 and the fastest gpu. It would be a blower, but it was still the fastest and the system would be hundreds of dollars cheaper, sometimes even over a thousand. These companies want the same money that boutique builders charge for simple custom loop builds. And you get a stock cooler, blower card or the cheapest version of a card, a single stick of ram if you don’t upgrade, a slow small ssd, and a baller no name platinum or gold psu. Lol you can get the same level of hardware but much better versions with a simple custom loop for the same money or less.

One thing I noticed with Dell.. (and it forced me into several buys rather than building my own..) is occasionally you get it far cheaper than you could building it yourself. In late 2017 That worked out to nearly $600CAD (414EURO) and in 2019 $250CAD (172 EURO) At those prices and difficulty getting 1080s in late 2017 I easily pulled the trigger on them. If I can't build it for cheaper with comparable parts.. it's always worth it.

I feel like a lot of people haven't actually watched the Video? All the comments I'm seeing is "YEAH IT WAS THAT BAD" or "YEAH IT SUCKS"...
But his final verdict was, well it's not great but it's not THAT bad. If you can get it on sales, especially considering that you cannot get a 3080 or 3090 otherwise, it's not the worst way to spend money. After some tweaking he was able to get reasonable temps (granted at the cost of higher noise) for all components and it performs a bit worst (like 5% at worst, more like 2 - 3 % most of the time) VS a build tested on an open test bench.
Obviously if you are an enthusiast, like to build a PC yourself and are into overclocking, this is NOT a PC for you and you shouldn't buy it (I wouldn't buy it). But for someone who just wants to play some games without too much hassle, and with a 3080 or 3090 at that, well this isn't the worst options.
Now all that being said, I have had to deal with DELL's customer support in the past, I would strongly recommend getting a prebuilt from another company as you DO NOT want to have to deal with their support (trust me, if you don't just take a random's stranger word on the internet, just look at videos from GN, LTT where they call DELL sale' department or support department, it's terrible). But the PC itself isn't all that bad. I think if you really want an RTX 3080 to play newer games (and we all know you can't find one right now) and this PC goes on sale, and you are OK with the drawback of this PC (I wouldn't be OK with it because no upgrade path possible, high noise, mediocre temperature), then this is an option if no other companies sell prebuilt in your area. Laptops are also a decent alternative, mobile GPUs are quit decent these days.

@@Sp4rKzTV The PC itself could be "good enough" but when you buy a prebuilt, you buy the whole package. And your argument can easily be flipped : As you said, that PC is not meant for enthousiasts. So in that sense, the bad warranty sales department with auxiliary customer support is way much more detrimental to the product. So no, taht Alienware is a bad product, and in that regard, all Alienware are. You pay for the "WOW factor" or the fancy case, but that's all, because unless you want insurance, the Dell support won't do anything for you when things go wrong (and they will, their cases and the components they uses in those being desingned to heavily rely on brute airflow, wich will be inevitably restricted by the dust the "non-enthiousiasts" that PC is targeted towards will unknowingly let add itselft up).

It has no heat pipes so the top of the cooler is practically useless

I got my first ever prebuilt a refurbished R11 with 3080 / i9 - price was less than components (due to high cost of 3080s and refurbished) - the mobo crapped out but dell service came to my place and replaced and now works like a charm - I never thought I'd say it but it's a damn good computer, and their service was way better than it used to be like

I bought an R10 ( Ryzen 5900 and Nvidia 3080 ) in Germany in the summer. At that time there was a 10% discount and it was really the only place you could actually buy any decent GPUs. I looked at self-build and also NZXT, but I paid €2700 and had a month's wait for delivery.
Even now, 3080s are over €1300, but at least they are available.
OK, the case runs hot, but it's easy enough to replace/add better fans and even improving the thermals on the Nvidia is doable.
And a case/mobo swap is always an option.

I agree, as a self builder myself, try building a 5950 with 3090 system yourself, you just can't get the parts without paying insane scalper prices. Dell isn't so bad at the moment with their discounts, better service and returns policy then other prebuild companies and it doesn't look like a 1980's RGB disco. 😉

The ticket is using AWCC thermal offset setting in manual and set top fan to 49% and front fan at 48% and then save that profile for your game. I have the stocks fan still and soon will upgrade to Noctuas. Again 5.0-5.3 ghz these rigs do not like at all. Let intel thermal velocity boost do the work.

If you factor in the still hugely inflated 3090 price, and that Dell can probably get their 3090 for 'normal' prices, the price difference compared to DIY should be closer to 1500 euros.
And of course the motherboards are only comparable in terms of number of USB ports.
Btw I did exactly the same back in the day, looking at the alienware website when I was a kid. With the AMD Athlon 64 FX. So cool, so incredibly expensive. No idea if they were any good back then, but they looked amazing.
Edit: a bunch of people are trying to sell these things on eBay without the GPU. What a great world we live in.

I've been building PC's long enough that I can go into my parts closet and put a system together at any given time. I want to say about the pre-built vs DIY question: build your own if you want a hobby and go with a reputable systems integrator if you just want a machine that works. It might sound controversial in this community, but consider that I, with all my experience, nearly burned my house down last night. My big mistake was using an EPS cable from a Corsair PSU with an EVGA PSU. Not only that, but I also spent hours troubleshooting an other system because I used a motherboard power cable From a Gen 5 Gold EVGA PSU with Gen 5 Bronze PSU. So Now I have all my power cables properly sorted and labelled, but this is the price of learning lessons nobody bothers to teach you in a youtube build guide.

I cant speak for the r12 but I bought the R10 with 5900x and 3080. It ran very hot and loud at nearly 90deg c under load and the cpu would start to throttle. It was also extremely loud. I have since moved everything into an o11 case. Doing that dropped the temps by nearly 10deg c. I have now upgraded the mother board and cooler and I am now down to 75deg c Max while gaming and am getting 20% more performance. The other issue that I had with Dell/Alienware is that I upgraded my m.2 my self when I got it to a 2TB drive. I ended up on the phone with tech support later for something and mentioned that I had changed the drive. They told me that I no longer had any warranty and ended the call. would I buy another Alienware, No. I am glad I was able to get the parts I wanted back in February at an alright price but there were just to many compromises to the system in my opinion. I could also just be to particular and it could be just fine for someone else. I expect a 5600 cpu would have been perfect in the system.

I missed this video when it came out but I'm very happy you did this one. I have a few of these, all water cooled, and I was pretty frustrated with GN's review. The air-cooled model should have never happened and that's Dell's fault. But GN bought the air cooled model and gave it a review that, while probably fair for the cheap machine, wasn't commensurate with my experiences with the properly configured water cooled models. I thought their review was fair for the air-cooled model, but unfairly condemned the entire lineup when the $100 water cooler was all that the system needed to change the results. And they called Dell incompetant in their review while themselves bungling their understanding of the service plan they accidentally signed up for. lol Thanks for the 100% fair review.

Still more reliable and competent hardware than all those "HIGH END GAMING PC FORTNITE 1TB" crapboxes that I still see go for $1000. I bought a R12 minus a GPU since I already had a GTX 1660 6GB, and with the stock i7 11k, a 2TB M2 SSD, and 32gb RAM, I have a very humble gaming rig for about $1500, barely breaks a sweat with Cyberpunk on Ultra w/ Reshade, Horizon Zero Dawn runs exceptionally well too.
My only real gripes being that the internal airflow is poorly thought out, the PSU placement is bad, the compartment that swivels out is a bit tight, it sometimes resembles a jet fighter, and it's not great to have a basic 1TB HDD in 2021, but the guy I bought it from obviously went low-spec just to get a cheap RTX from factory or something. Either way, not a bad template for slapping nicer hardware into, maybe even a new one if you want a reliably new GPU for a fair price.
Like I tell people, you buy Alienware, you're just getting Bougie Dell, and with parts scalping, maybe the best or at least easiest value depending on your expectations and budget.

I’m having problems with the Alienware Software, it won’t update the cumulative software. Annoying, considering it is supposedly top end.

dont know how you can even compare the dell proprietary parts to 3rd party manufactures but ok, the power supply is proprietary the motherboard is proprietary the gpu heatsink/aio is proprietary, dell uses the most cheapest parts so honestly the Alienware probably costed them just under $2400, i seriously doubt they spent 3500 without the case and left themselves a few pennies.

@der8auer Hi. Can you make a video about Alienware Area 51 R2? Now they are dropping prices rapidly on Dell sites. Nevertheless great channel
