I just shared this video with a friend whose daughter plans to major in industrial engineering next year as a freshman in college. Not only are your videos fascinating to us laymen, but they’re great recruiting tools for the industry. Showing off some of your interns’ skills is genius.

In a way the way they are using the hot/ warm side of the ac circuit is a heat pump. If you look at a home heat pump system it is switching between heating and cooling depending on which side of the compressor they choose to either heat or cool your home.

Considering Rivian’s modest unit production numbers, it makes sense to use off the shelf technology where possible. Tesla’s annual Model 3 units produced is almost an order of magnitude higher, thus the added up front costs of custom design and validation of parts is justifiable. That octovalve, for example, cost plenty to design and more to validate, but it doesn’t save a huge cost per unit. You have to make a lot of units for it to make economic sense.
Wonderful to see such a competent and engaged a young lady presenting a complicated technical system like a pro. Thanks for getting us up to speed on Rivian's approach to thermal management. Well done Alex and Cory.

In 1969, when I was a senior in high school, I was working at a Chevy dealership in East Texas after school and Saturdays. A Chevrolet Motor Division executive came to visit the dealer and when he went around to meet all of the employees, he told me that if I wanted to go to General Motors Institute to give him a call when he got back. I wished I had made the call but it was too far from home at the time. What was once GMI is now Kettering.
So if the A/C refrigerant (heat pump) system is used to also provide strategic heat for the batteries and motors when needed, why is it not also used to heat the cabin?
I wonder if the reason Tesla uses the plate heat exchanger in the motor units is for reliability and durability purposes. If there is a failure in one of the lines that is routing ethylene glycol through the unit, the coolant will mix with the oil and it will need near complete disassembly to remedy the problem. The plate heat exchanger may be less likely to fail and easier to change if it does
The tools of success are thrust upon you when you are a Kettering University student. 100% work/study. Some students work in their positions before they even have their first class for three months. This is the way all schools should be. My son did this. And before he got out, he had already presented a paper at SAE Congress. This past week alone he has interview interests from NASA Mars, Tesla, and an auto manufacturer in the Balkans.(Bugatti Rimac) I can’t stress firmly enough the value of Kettering.

Is there any chance you can comment on the Rivians ability to recapture energy, specifically when decelrating and limitations in the system? I've seen a few threads and videos talking about how the Rivian starts to back off regenerative braking intesity while under a sustained load (towing downhill for example or driving down a long steep grade). I'm wondering if that's a thermal issue, or if having 4 motors (now generators) dumping power into the battery at once, begins to overwhelm the batteries ability to accept the high sustained charge rate?
Most EVs will limit regen if the battery is full. So then you need to apply brakes. But there are probably other conditions where regen is limited like if the motors or battery is too hot. Seems like there is alot of EV learning curve stuff that will impact driving behaviors as we go forwards.

I'm speaking to Rivians ability exclusively where the regen will limit after a sustained use of 10-20 seconds. Regardless of battery state of charge or it temperature it would seem. I think I said this in my comment that it's likely exceeding the packs ability to accept power that quickly and starts to back off and blend friction brakes.
I have only seen the regen limit a couple of times in mine. Usually after a few minutes down a several mile hill. Never in 20-30 seconds. I assume its a thermal limitation. At close to 8k lbs and 4 motors that has to be a lot more energy produced than most typical smaller EVs. I also got a regen limited message in colder temps (low teens to single digits) for the first few minutes of driving.
Big EV HVAC advantage over ICE is that the compressor is not coupled to an engine so it can run at full capacity while the car is still. This shortens cooldown on hot days. Similarly it can provide heat immediately on 'start up'.
It also doesnt depend on the driver pressing the "AC" button to make sure the compressor stays lubricated. I learned that lesson the hard way... had my engine completely lock up while going down the road just because I never liked cold air blowing up my nose. And then I had to pay to have the compressor replaced for the AC I wasnt using because for whatever reason there wasnt a dummy pulley available for that specific engine to eliminate the AC compressor.
RELIABILITY , always TRUMPS repairability. the BEST part, is NO part. the BEST service , is NO service needed in FIRST place. the BEST repair , is NO repair needed for 400,000 miles. (TESLA).

BECAUSE , Tesla changes 100 parts every 24 H, every car is UNIQUE. but has passed SAFETY & Validation tests. so, your TESLA may be a 140% build or 110% build on ANY given day.
Just getting around to this video. Not sure if Sandy ever commented on your question in another video. I can tell you that my R1T did great here in PA during the Xmas polar freeze. Had temps hovering around 0 and I saw no problem getting the cabin, seat, and steering wheel toasty fast. Spending time in the Rivian forums, this does seem to vary from vehicle to vehicle and not sure why. One of the last couple OTA updates added the ability to start it all from the phone app too. My truck sits in a detached garage with no heat, so being able to have it warm and ready has been great.

We find filters (strainer) in the thermal management system of the high voltage battery and heating dr the cabin of the Chevrolet Volt 2011-2015 for info ... I love listening to your videos
Nice presentation. I do have one question: If the car used a heat pump in lieu of resistance heating, how would that improve the range? Or, would it be cheaper to just increase the battery capacity?
Heat pumps add range and/or lower battery size. Every Watt of added battery capacity comes with a weight penalty that means heavier and stronger frame and suspension components, and more energy used to move (lower efficiency), so less miles per kWhour of energy. Heat pumps can return a 1 to 5 ratio of power input for heat output, so 4 times more heat than if they just used resistance heating. 4 times less battery capacity needed to get the same amount of heating is huge when it comes cost and weight reduction. That is the brilliance of the Tesla system, since it integrates all of the cooling and heating needs of the drive train, batteries, and cabin into one heat pump unit, while according to Monro Rivian uses a heat pump for everything but the cabin heating, where they use resistive heating. Although I wonder if maybe the resistive heater was just a backup to the heat pump unit to provide extra heat in very cold weather, as it looked like a heat pump system, just not as integrated as Tesla's. People forget that an AC unit is a heat pump that pumps heat one way out of our buildings or cars, although we tend to use that term for bi-directional heat pumps that can both cool and heat a space.
@5:30 it’s a chiller with Electronic expansion valve. I am not sure if it’s possible to have the refrigerant flow in the opposite direction. Can you verify the system or explain in detail.
I like the coolant filter. If the system ever needs service it can be contaminated and filters are a great idea. Not a place to save money. Advice from a retired technician.
Agree! For example e-Golf has a bad reputation for compressor failures, leading to an insanely costly replacement of the entire AC system to ensure no particulates are left in the refrigerant system. A filter directly after an potential failure point prevents the problem from spreading, Keeping the R1T coolant clean is equally important when it runs through the battery,
I agree, that filter while an fairly expensive part will prevent the failure of several other components which would cost many times the price of the filter. An ounce of prevention that reduces life cycle costs and improves reliability.
Nice presentation. Alex is getting better rapidly. At the end with the three most important things: A. Battery, B. Motors, C thermal system and making the cabin temp. comfortable quickly; so how well does the Rivian do on this ?
Some heavy duty Diesel engines have a coolant filter but it isn’t to trap debris. They are used to keep the cooling system chemistry stable and extend the coolant life. The chemistry is used to reduce cavation and corrosion of the cooling system
by 2030 HD trucks will have to go BEV, gas is already DEAD as a fuel. TESLA even DELETED , every Belt and Pulley in the car , 10x MORE reliable . ICE is a DEAD end.
If the ethylene glycol is going directly into/thru the motor to cool it or pick up heat, maybe that is why they need the coolant filter? small motor particles?
Nice review - but jeebus that plastic geared coolant valve dealybob will fail in less than 10 years as plasti becomes brittle and old - is this easily replaced?
Nice explanation from Alex and her boss. Say you live at the bottom of a hill and park your vehicle outside on a very cold winter night. No PTC element? Can this vehicle at least be programmed so the heat pump comes on say 30 minutes before your scheduled drive?
@ Munro live can you please explain that, how the chiller is working as a heat pump because as far as i know, for heat pump action there must be an expansion valve at the condenser as well but there is no txv at the condenser.

As a R1T owner, I can say this traditional heater works better than heat pump systems in teslas. Less efficient, but it's like a traditional heater from a ICE. HOT air.

Could the valve for the rear motors be used for conserve mode? The truck goes to front wheel drive so probably don't need to cool the unused motors.

Maybe that's what the PTC's for?

Sounds like they needed to run a bit of heating to the headlights to deal with wet clumpy snow.

Nice presentation. I do have one question: If the car used a heat pump in lieu of resistance heating, how would that improve the range? Or, would it be cheaper to just increase the battery capacity?
Heat pumps add range and/or lower battery size. Every Watt of added battery capacity comes with a weight penalty that means heavier and stronger frame and suspension components, and more energy used to move (lower efficiency), so less miles per kWhour of energy. Heat pumps can return a 1 to 5 ratio of power input for heat output, so 4 times more heat than if they just used resistance heating. 4 times less battery capacity needed to get the same amount of heating is huge when it comes cost and weight reduction. That is the brilliance of the Tesla system, since it integrates all of the cooling and heating needs of the drive train, batteries, and cabin into one heat pump unit, while according to Monro Rivian uses a heat pump for everything but the cabin heating, where they use resistive heating. Although I wonder if maybe the resistive heater was just a backup to the heat pump unit to provide extra heat in very cold weather, as it looked like a heat pump system, just not as integrated as Tesla's. People forget that an AC unit is a heat pump that pumps heat one way out of our buildings or cars, although we tend to use that term for bi-directional heat pumps that can both cool and heat a space.
YES, all TESLA ditched RH , in favor of Compact , Light heat pump.

@5:30 it’s a chiller with Electronic expansion valve. I am not sure if it’s possible to have the refrigerant flow in the opposite direction. Can you verify the system or explain in detail.
I like the coolant filter. If the system ever needs service it can be contaminated and filters are a great idea. Not a place to save money. Advice from a retired technician.
Agree! For example e-Golf has a bad reputation for compressor failures, leading to an insanely costly replacement of the entire AC system to ensure no particulates are left in the refrigerant system. A filter directly after an potential failure point prevents the problem from spreading, Keeping the R1T coolant clean is equally important when it runs through the battery,
I agree, that filter while an fairly expensive part will prevent the failure of several other components which would cost many times the price of the filter. An ounce of prevention that reduces life cycle costs and improves reliability.

Rivian just had a recall because some of the water based coolant was leaking into the high voltage windings of the motors.
Some heavy duty Diesel engines have a coolant filter but it isn’t to trap debris. They are used to keep the cooling system chemistry stable and extend the coolant life. The chemistry is used to reduce cavation and corrosion of the cooling system
by 2030 HD trucks will have to go BEV, gas is already DEAD as a fuel.
TESLA even DELETED , every Belt and Pulley in the car , 10x MORE reliable .

If the ethylene glycol is going directly into/thru the motor to cool it or pick up heat, maybe that is why they need the coolant filter? small motor particles?

Nice review - but jeebus that plastic geared coolant valve dealybob will fail in less than 10 years as plasti becomes brittle and old - is this easily replaced?
How do you know? Some plastics last forever.
Problem with most plastics is they last too long.
Nice explanation from Alex and her boss. Say you live at the bottom of a hill and park your vehicle outside on a very cold winter night. No PTC element? Can this vehicle at least be programmed so the heat pump comes on say 30 minutes before your scheduled drive?
@ Munro live can you please explain that, how the chiller is working as a heat pump because as far as i know, for heat pump action there must be an expansion valve at the condenser as well but there is no txv at the condenser.

As a R1T owner, I can say this traditional heater works better than heat pump systems in teslas. Less efficient, but it's like a traditional heater from a ICE. HOT air.

What's the difference between how this chiller works in reverse and a heat pump?
That is a heat pump, the three way valve is the same on a HVAC heat pump while pulling heat from the heat exchanger.
I imagine that not only are the temps lower but the pressures too. That's got to help with lower costs and higher reliability.
