    Love it! I had that exact same car in college, same color and vinyl top. It was northern Michigan so rust was a constant threat (college in 78). My girlfriend loved it. But gas went fast. When I floored it, you could literally watch the gas gauge go down as the speed went up. Drove it to California for my first AF assignment . Great car.

    What a gem!...This vehicle was among the last of the truly beautiful, large cruisers that defined the apogee of American automobiles..I owned a used, 1972 Buick Electra, back in the early 1980s...it also had that awesome 455V8...By 72. those massive engines were being stifled by emerging smog requirements, and the cars lost their extremely powerful acceleration...but what power there was, was still enough to move those bulky masterpieces down the road very well...As for mpg--forget it!...10-13mpg...But gas was still reasonably priced...mu two kids were small then, but safe in that hunky vehicle!

    Gorgeous car. The Rivs from the 60s and early 70s were all about elegant style, but the 3rd gen (1971-73) were like nothing else on the road. A true rolling piece of art!
    I had to chuckle when the owner Len mentioned that the GS was a feature package that included power steering and so forth......hard to believe that one could could actually order a personal luxury coupe that was only available with a big block V8 without power assisted steering.

    • @MostlyBuicks
      @MostlyBuicks 10 місяців тому +1

      All these Rivieras came standard with power steering and brakes. The GS option was a handling package with QUICKER steering, a posi, higher numerical rear gears, and stiffer springs. This owner does not know much about his own car. The Stage I option was a higher output engine with larger valves and hotter cam.

      @@MostlyBuicks Thanks, that makes more sense.
      That said, I believe that many "base model" full size cars of that era could be purchased as "strippers", with 6 cylinder engines, manual transmissions, and no power assists.

    • @MostlyBuicks
      @MostlyBuicks 10 місяців тому

      @@martinliehs2513 The last year for LeSabres or Wildcats to come with manual transmissions was 1970. Riviera and Electra NEVER had manual transmissions. And no full sized Buick had 6 cylinder engines until the late 70s when Buick reacquired the V6 from American Motors. Don't confuse what Chevy did with Buick.

    Great car Lou.....it's a shame I know where one of those rare 73 GS Riviera s went.
    Back around 1977 a friend young like myself owned one but didn't understand the low number production and I fell in love as we all could do.
    Needless to say he was very hard on it because of the 455 and it wasn't long before it was wrecked and scrapped.
    It broke my heart knowing that Frost White GS was punished for doing nothing wrong.

    So Unique! The trunk space was fantastic. Beautiful at EVERY angle! You did a GREAT job of filming. I was surprised by the fakeness of the wood tone on the dash. I thought with these looks it should have been better. Brushed Aluminum would have been great..at least on the GS. This wood grain plastic cheapens the interior. Love the idle sound and the engine rev. My poor little Focus should be ashamed of itself for the way it sounds at idle! HA HA.

      Good call on the brushed aluminum for the instrument panel! The 1971 and 1972 boat tail Riv's had an engine turned metal applique and a "twin cove" style i.p. which kind of emphasized the "boat tail" centerline of the car in the interior. In 1973 they went to the same i.p. as the rest of the large Buicks.

Un interior amplio y bellamente tapizado con mucha emulación de madera en puertas e instrumentos, típico de ésa época. Bueno saber, que éstos modelos de Buick fueron de los primeros que iniciaron ésta andadura de la "Historia de Mi Coche". A GS as well, all options, in the lighter shade of green with the white half vinyl top and white leather interior. I got to ride in it often to travel to the Outer Banks NC for the weekend (from SE VA) when I was invited to stay in their summer Holiday Rambler Travel Trailer, just steps across the road from the beach/ocean. Oh WOW big bro Lou! What a special car. Just outrageous and adventurous, really. Talk about making a styling statement! That swoopy boattail and those huge creases and swoops down her side and across her hood....I love it. Unapologetically all-American and in your face! Nothing subtle with all that beautiful sculpture. Autumn gold too? Awesome. Us card carrying JV baseball guys from the 80's love to have gold (yellow) stripes on top our tubesocks 🤣LOL-classic! What's your big brotherly opinion, Lou? This big gal gonna have me knocked out😵? In my tubesocked stocking feet, too-THWACK>>>THWACK...my super floppy sneakers fly right off quick and land in Mr. Lenaghan's yard🤪😂😆?! As always, I so appreciate what you do here, Lou. Bringing awesome car loving human stories 'n sunshine in a dark world that needs it. God bless you, big brother! :) JV Johnny ⚾

    These cars were cool. My first car was a 67 Mustang, being 16 I drove it till it started ticking. It was low on oil & my father got killed in an auto accident so I had no one to advise me. Thinking it was going to blow I went on to trade it off & I saw a green 72 Riv & a 72 Grand Prix w/ a400. The Riv I loved but I drove it 15 miles & I could see the gas gage go dn.fast . So I bought the more fuel efficient GP! Lol

    I believe GM had stopped making the barrel speedometers by 1971, but I'm not sure. Certainly by 1973 they had stopped. Our family car had a barrel speedometer, a 66 'Tornado, and my mom's brother had a Rivera with the barrel speedometer. Those speedometers were a great conversation starters with passengers who had never seen one before. Our 1960 Olds had a barrel speedometer had one but was designed more horizontal than the vertical ones in the Rivera and Tornados. Dad and I used to go to Frogs Follies every year and we'd always keep an eye out for those type of speedometers. Who would guess a speedometer could ever be such an attention grabber?

    I too fell in love with the Riviera when introduced in the fall of 1970. I was 14 at the time. I even wrote a fan letter to Buick. I did end up owning a 1971 Gran Sport in 1976. Unfortunately, here in Wisconsin they did not age well and it was already beginning to rust.

    I live in a small town of about 3000 people and 3 miles away is a town of about 500. These 2 small communities are home to some cool older vehicle with some of them being fairl rare. One of the more rare cars was a silver boat tail Riviera GS that during the summers was its owners daily driver. It needed a repaint but was otherwise straight and clean. It was the guys daily driver because he didnt want to put many miles on his "good car" which was a fairly decent but not great 72 Monte Carlo with a 350. Its forest green paint still shined but its front clip had been replaced due to either rust or a minor accident but not sure which. The formerly red front clip had some bondo and was in black primer for a couple years but did get painted. It was nice but that Riviera GS would have been way nicer if he had it painted. When the guy died, Im not sure what happened to those cars but only know they disappeared and havent been seen since. The list of really nice vintage cars in the area is mindblowing considering that we live in the rust belt where most old cars are rusted half way up to the windows.
