- Опубліковано 12 січ 2020
- Guitar Store Tours ep. 2 in Paris France, we checked out some of the best guitar shops Paris has to offer and in the process I found the best Fender Stratocaster I've ever played, an original 1956 vintage strat.

Someone needs to invent a reverb pedal that only sounds like a guitar store. Everything sounds different after you take it home...
FlyingV2112 * I think it’s got a lot to do with the amp you used in the store, versus the amp you’ve got at home.
@@candidlyopinionated19 But what if it's an amp your buying..... ',:/
FlyingV2112 * you’ve got me there lol
Even more true for acoustic guitars.
It's the adrenaline of buying new gear lol
I'm a French (former Parisian) guitarist living in Nashville, so trippy to see you in this "rue de Douai" that I've been going regularly to check, buy and sell guitars since I was 12!!
That’s gotta be wild to see. How different or the same was it from what you remember as a kid?
@@synyster_nate I live in Nashville now, but every time I go back, it feels weird because it's pretty much the same thing but with new people in slightly different shops, you feel you're in a parallel universe!
That Strat sounds like Beautiful and Heavenly wind chimes in the distance. Sounds amazing for chordal play
Hope you didn’t leave without that Strat! It’s sweet.
That's why I Love The Strat
Nope, the Gibson sounded so much sweeter. Strats have an insipid, lightweight sound that fails to really 'bite' like a Humbuckered will.
"You should buy a vintage one."
Does she have a sister?
God i hope so ! lol
@@bishlap Yes Sir
working on that number right now lol
On the road in Paris, definitely not for the faint hearted
I was in Paris during the spring of 2000 for 2 weeks and played a few night clubs while I was there. During the day I went to a lot of different restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Then to the art museums and music stores. It was a great time. Another thing about Paris is you can't have a bad meal there. The food is the best I've ever experienced. Not only is the taste and quality sensational, but the amount of food you get for the money it cost is better than in the states.
And just like that, the fender custom shop no longer seems expensive!
Still expensive lol
Me in guitar shop in Paris: uh where is your squire section.
Fun to see you at my friends store, and glad to see they were the most friendly.
Hey dear Rhett, you just missed the two best vintage stores in rue de Douai: Vintage guitars owned by Hertz Mairon (world renowned expert for serious guitars and top player), and his very friendly neighbours Ben & Fred (so many cool vintage electric guitars and acoustic old martins and gibsons). Next time maybe. All the best, and sorry for the subway strikes.
Are Vintage guitars still in business? Last few times I have passed it has been closed. Hope not as we have lost too many guitar shops there already.
@@simonbrown1572 Hertz shut down his store end of January last. His store was bought by his neighbors Ben and Fred
My wife and I visited Paris back in 2013 and we stumbled across these shops when we went to visit Montmartre & Sacre Coeur. We took the metro to the Abbesses station which put us out right next to The Moulin Rouge with is just a block north of "Rue de Douai".
This “series” is so cool. I often go to a performance and see someone playing an incredible instrument and wonder about the story of how it got into their hands.
This would be me. Arrive in an amazing city for first time....so, where are the guitar shops?
Near Pigalle metro station.
Rue de Douai.
B TI
Well if the person who made the original comment is anything like me it doesn’t matter if the town/city is amazing or not. When I go to a new town the first thing I do is Google Musical Instrument Stores Near Me.
@@bti4129 Except it is
@@bti4129 In May, lots of construction but as tremendous as ever.
Did it in Tokyo. My girlfriend was crazy :(
That was fun. I've been to Paris once. Didn't go to any music stores. Thanks for bringing us along. This is such a great channel. Thank you, Rhett!
Lived in Paris all my life, and always loved shopping for guitars in the city.
The first shop you went into I visited while I was working in a concert hall nearby. The Cadillac fin LP was actually on display. One of the nicest and most knowledgeable guy. Amazing inventory and some guitars I've only seen in books! This shop should be a museum at this point.
some amazing guitars, as a barely intermediate player i think you make anything you play sound good. So much is in the player. Thanks for the vids, really enjoy them!
A while back I asked in a Q&A what was your favorite guitar you didn't own, you said the exact guitar you played here, a '61 335. It looks like it lived up to the expectations you had for it!
It's great to see new areas of a city with which am familiar through your eyes! I hope that you get to continue this tour of stores through other European cities such as Amsterdam!
I love this series! Very interesting. Also cool that you ran into a fan.
Rhett, honestly man, if there's anyone from the internet that I wanna be right now, it's you!
With your skill, your knowledge and for your taste in sounds... and everything in between.
Woodstore is the best vintage guitar store in Rue Douai IMHO, Julien is a great guy and he takes time for everybody, talking, let you play, never hurries you, no difference if you're a broken student curious about vintage stuff or an old bum that knows exactly what he's looking for. Truly a unique place.
Shopping for guitars in Paris in Pigalle 's area was definitely better back in the early 90's . Way more more shops back then , and the guys behind the counter didn't take themselves seriously . You could still have some great bargains , with "L series Strats" hanging on the walls , the price of a today's Custom Shop...
Greetings from France
6:35 That SG! It's a beauty!
I used to go around these streets years ago. I got my American standard Telecaster from one of the shops, I also had hepcats pickups installed. Lovely guitar bit I traded it regrettably. I also got a Get'm Get'm black and white check guitar strap and a vox amplig AC30 which still works, that is over 12 years ago, and I still have the guitar strap which still looks like new. Those guitars that you played sounded amazing, I really loved the strat tone. You play very well, I think I will learn some of those licks.
Little fragment of kid Charlemagne on the Gibson, great !
DLJ Tavy Always good to hear!
Thanks for all the content Rhett..keep it coming. Was in Paris for the first time over New Years and have to agree with you, great city. Its hard not to turn down a street and not say wow. This section of town is amazing for guitar nerds. In addition to the stores Rhett gave us content on there are extreme specialty store. For example a left hand only store, pedal only store and so much more. While I was there I played a 66 ES335 at Guitar Legend. So much fun.
Omg left hand only store is my dream
Strats are the best!! Theres something so familiar anytime you pick up a strat anywhere! A strat, les paul and a good acoustic is all i'll ever need! Sounds great man! Rock on!!
4:54 she was literally speaking what my inner thoughts were screaming
It's cool that you were looking at a 1956 Strat in France, Because my parents were on there honeymoon in France in 1956, I really enjoy these guitar shop videos, but I got extra excited when he said he was looking for a bass. but then there weren't any. someday I need to get to France.
There’s undeniable mojo in those old guitars.
Did a guitar safari in Vicksburg, MS with my wife on Saturday, store is 60 years old and @Rhett Shull you can play whatever you want. The original owners wife still runs it and being Mississippi, you almost always have a certified-real blues guy drop by on a weekend. Great stories and they put up with my guitar challenged self, love the guitars, I play like crap.
Love the Tillysass at the beginning of the video. "That is my ride."
No, no no. You're supposed to buy the $40k guitar THEN say your card was stolen and you have no idea where that charge came from. >D
Yeah, cept his wife was standing right there..lol..
I loved finding my bands album in a Paris store.Great city to explore. Gotta take the train to Versailles.
Thanks for taking us along.
Something magical happens entering an unknown guitar shop! Thank you Rhett for sharing!!!
Very cool! I was just there on that same street a few months ago. Lots of vintage gear and friendly shop owners. Pricey and a lot of shops won’t let you “touch the goods”. There is another shop on the other side of Paris that let you play everything, but newer models. Anyways, nice video! Keep on rockin.
Intense bike action!! You're on to something with the entourage/guitar shop/ Paris gig!! I wish I wasn't always intimidated playing in a shop. Currently 4 Fender and a Don Grosh in rotation. My baby's.
The solo from Peg on that burst was so perfect. I honestly hope it gets that guitar someday
Love Paris! Great city that is so beautiful, especially in the summer. Not sure I’d ride a bike there though, some of the scariest driving I’ve ever encountered was in Paris
Since a couple of months , Paris speed limit fell to 30km/h ..
Greetings from France
Wow, your first time! You will now want to go back year-after-year. Music bars of interest: Duc Lombard, Utopia, Caveau Huchette, 38 Riv...Mostly Jazz, but very cool jazz a la St. Germaine. Enjoy...👍😃🎼🎶🎸🥁🎤
That 1956 Stratocaster in the Tobacco burst is amazing. What a tone coming from that thing.
I've been to paris twice and i really didn't enjoy it that much, but watching this video makes me consider going there again sometime
That lefty TV yellow special jr in the window was sweet too!!
I'm from Nantes, France. This is fun to see you walking in some french streets !
I went in thinking that he is in Paris and will get the finest of thieves attention. The whole video was great and the guitars were nice, then the mention of the take at the very end. Brutal.
It was inevitable. I called it as soon as the video started.
i live in Paris glad to see that you enjoy the spot where you can find your dream guitar !!!
Nice idea for a series!!!! Obviously you'll be coming back to London. There are a couple of nice stores in Bologna near me in Florence. Tomassone for new gear and Scalopendra, full of vintage gear (including Rhodes, Moogs etc.)
Great video, as usual ;)
I recognised all the shops, which I visited on my last business trip to Paris last September. A 13 year old Japanese '62 reissue Fender Telecaster stole my heart at Woodstore, and it's been my main and most loved guitar since then :)
Which color is it? Or can you see it in Rhetts video?
Damn !!!---That ES-335 sounded nice unpluged !!!-That's the sign of a nice guitar!!!
Was there in Oct., loved it.
I saw an RD in the window of the second shop that looked pretty cool, too.
Hey ! Funny to have you in Paris :-D Living in, the City, and nearby this street, I'm not very surprised that some stores are not very welcoming. Some Canadian friends of mine had a bad experience a few years ago : some owner asked them to leave the store because he said that he didn't want to waste with people who will not buying anything. I was quite schoked actually when it happened. It's sad but people are a bit rude in Paris I think. Anyway… I hope you enjoy your time in the city :-D
So awesome that Bobby plays with Sean!
Love that Ruben Ford at 14:45
LOL, "I just got cut off by a go-cart!"
Good luck Jeremy!
Dude that burst LOOKS so good on you, let alone the sound!
it's kind of pronounced rue de "duway" . I'm a french guitar lover musician and subscriber to your channel. Really like your touch and your content. I see you were dressed in a very Parisian clothing style. I'm really happy that you enjoyed the beauty of Paris. I always take time to check out the guitar shops too when I head to the capital or anywhere I go ...guitar players will be guitar players !
Ha! I was just there and did the guitar hunting tour. All of those shops had beautiful inventory but crazy prices, and I got the evil eye every time I touched anything or asked a question.
Gotta love that awesome french hospitality. Especially to American gringos.
HOME!!!! :D Hope you enjoyed your time there!
They are ALWAYS on strike in the transportation industry in Europe lol. When I was in Belgium they were striking but still running the metro trains. They just handed us a pass to go wherever we wanted for the rest of the day for free.
Now THAT is how you do a strike - make the company suffer, not the everyday folk (like me in Paris) just trying to get to work!
I like the Steely Dan solo lick on the 335! :-) Paris is wonderfull, even more when the weather is nice. Thanks for the videos, they are really interesting, even for a drummer. LoL.
love Paris, Didn't go to those stores, but hit two by the Eiffel Tower.
also, thanks for showing Notre-Dame.
cheers from Montana
Just saw the NAMM Mythos thing...your idea for the Lark is genius. I think other pedal makers will pick up on the idea and also do an Amp-in-a-Box like you did!
Riding a bike in Paris? You're a braver man than I was. One cab ride there is like a trip to Six Flags.
I dont rake my car into Paris def not cycling there..
I’ve been there on that streets and marveled at the splendor!
Also, something you should point out, is that the majority of musical instruments shops, including guitar shops are located in the "Pigalle" district of Paris. "Pigalle" is also known as being the place where the ladies selling their charms used to be, including strip tease clubs, hostess bars and the like. It is still a little bit like this today, but not as much as when I was a kid.
Last but not least, James Trussart, le French luthier known is Los Angeles used to have his shop right there too. But as a pioneer of his craft, he decided to move to the USA early, because the market was there. I remember entering his shop back then, Rue Duperré. I did not think much of purchasing a guitar with a rusty metal top at the time... lol...
ho ho ho, welcome to Paris! I'm in Toulouse right now, I hope you enjoy you trip ;) But I'm surpised, I never thought it would be cheaper here !
Very cool episode
Guitar safari in Paris.
What a great show. I especially enjoyed the bike thing it all created a wonderful anticipation to seeing the guitars. You should do a regular show on window shopping for treasures I am sure we all would look forward to it. Victory should hire you I've not heard a better demo of how rich the tone is. I noticed your lovely lady was all for getting the Gibson. My wife is my bass player with ye old Jazz and P. bass and has just added an old Music Man to her collection. She did her homework and if Leo was directly involved with the design she 'has' to have one.Mind you she is a savvy shopper the instruments are near new condition and she bought the Jazz and the P. for less then $500.00 USD. These all American made instruments too so the prices are a steal. I have to wait my turn. lol
I bought a blackface Deluxe in that very same shop (the first one) , it's now my live go-to amp. Very nice friendly personnel.
That lick at 9:40 sounded like "Help the Poor" by Robben Ford.
Anderson guitars Peter Honore has a version of the Victory that he may be interested in trying.
I'm going back to Paris in March and now I have a couple cool shops to check out ;)
You gotta visit Stockholm, I did last summer and it was a great city to get by with the subways, buses and even boats.
At 3:46, it's quite cute that the couple laughed in sync. ;)
Don't chase the grail. Chase the Tone. Love the amp store.
Jeremy you're doing fine... you know who to follow to connect the dots.
Rhett . your tone is great this week.
Ah, brings back memories. Great video and like a little travelogue but better! Thing about the prices in Europe on guitars is that it seems they're locally priced (ie, more expensive than in the US simply because they're even more rare there), plus the VAT which you can get back...
I was there in Paris December 19th. We tried to drive. 2.5 hours to drive 2 miles in a car. You got it right with the bikes. We did the Eiffel tower and the Seine river 1 hour cruise. As much as I was uncomfortable there I too would go again.
These type of videos are AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every Gf/Wife/woman to their man when it comes to any musical instrument @4:59 lol makes me cry
You realize she was telling him to buy the vintage one and take it on the road right?
@@RhettShull Thats the part that made me cry, that she was with it for him to get one lol
Rhett Shull thats a good idea. Just spend a little extra care to ensure it’s cared for always
@@RhettShull how did your card get stolen? Please tell so we don't have it happen to us.
I thought the catch was “Don’t buy it if you don’t use it:)” because he was going to put it in a vault at home like you said in Rick’s video about vintage guitars...
I love these videos where you go shopping
loved hearing some Larry Carlton on that 335!
Had the same experience with a 57 strat. It just didn't need any amp crunch to sound like an electric should and it just played itself. The one you play there sound like the same to me!
7:00 that is the most gorgeous strat sound I've ever heard. So natural and warm.
Ha ha nice to see friends from Pigale store on your chanel.
"Woodstore" definitly one of my favorite. Purchased a Fender Japan Old Candy Red Telecaster with US pickups there ... My number one guitare...
Hope I had the cash to buy much more there...
Another cool store in Paris is Bass N Guitar in the 19th, very cool place, you can try everything from budget to vintage and the owner is very friendly, a good place to exchange you gears as well!!
7:35 Block inlay jag in the back😍
Rabea Massaad would be proud seeing you play the Kraken ;)
I go sometimes to rue de Douai since 1980, (i was 18) bought some guitars there since all these years..
That Purdie Shuffle at the beginning is as cool as Paris.
Being a lefty...…. my guitar shop trips are totally different...….
Same
dave late there's a lefty only guitar shop on that street. It's just a shit as all the other shops
Being a lefty guitar player would be so hard on me. I'd say only about 10% or less of the guitars on Craigslist are lefties.
Dave, there's a shop near my home in Florida called Jerry's Lefty Guitars. He's in Sarasota and he has the most incredible selection of lefty guitars I've ever seen. His website isn't the greatest but you'll get the idea.
Yeah, I hear ya!
Great concept! Wish I was with you!
Dude totally just been to the same places as you this weekend!! We have been scootering around the city all weekend 😂
You should have gone to Guitare Village, in Domont. Place would've blown your mind.
We’ve all had that conversation at 5 mins in. If it was shoes sitting in a wardrobe until the “right occasion” there would be no question.
15 years ago or so I bought my first proper guitar in that store (after spending 10 years learning on cheap used axes). It was a Fender Jaguar Japan reissue Candy Apple Red with matching headstock... The same you sat by to try that 335 in 2020. Small world. Sorry you got had in Paris though. Hopefully that didn't ruin your trip.
Congratulations! That's a very sweet looking Fender with the painted headstock. I'm sure it plays like butter and sounds like a chiming harp! (That's been my experience with most Fenders I've played anyway) Cheers from across the pond in Louisiana. (Go Tigers! LSU National Champions!) P[>
@@patrickfoster4586 She s still in my collection 15 years later while more expensive guitars have joined and left since I bought her. Love it to bits
I saw a 1972 - 1974 Mosrite V1 Bass on the left at 4:36. It's the sunburst headstock bass.
