      I have built dozens of lithium batteries and solar systems on RVS and I would NEVER trust my life to solar. We are a hundred years from being anywhere near ready to go total electric on anything and even then we will be dependent on nuclear power.

    solar panels on the sides will get a lot of sun bouncing off of the water as well. current studies are showing that vertical panels like these are actually better in areas that get a lot of solar bounce than panels angled up directly at the sun in part due to the bounce but also because the panels pointed up get hot and lose efficiency.

    I love the interiors on this yacht - throw in the sun deck too. The cabins are very well done, especially the double-bunk kid's cabin. Lots of memories of a good time there for sure! I think their approach to solar is right for a boat on the water - you never know which way the sun will be facing you, so panels on all sides makes good sense.

    Great idea to use all the "unused" space of the boat for solar panels. Since we have so much load shedding in South Africa, I have a bought a solar installation for my house. It was a good investment. Love it. I have 13x 550 watt panels ,8kw inverter, 2x 5kw batteries. That wattage of the boat is unreal!

    • @haldepet12
      @haldepet12 11 місяців тому +1

      Well, unreal, but is it enough to produce the needed energy? You know with running full power, the boat needs 360kw and that is still a relatively slow speed. And the battery alone will do this for about 1h. Therefore, you need to produce constantly about 400kw, and here you see the problem, the peak is only 34kw.
      What is the conclusion? They realised that this is not working, and so they put a fuel engine as well. I call this greenwashing, but the whole concept is so failed.

    • @hannesmalan7550
      @hannesmalan7550 11 місяців тому

      "green power" is great but I believe we will never ever replace fossil fuels. we will always need it, especially crossing a wide ocean. You really do need that backup, regarding the boat propulsion, i do not think you would need to run full speed 24/7 @@haldepet12

      I agree (kinda...) that solar isn't up to the task yet, but for crossing oceans we have sailboats. They usually do have a Diesel engine as well, but that is only for close quarters maneuvering and emergencies. The close quarters maneuvering can be replaced with electric, but motoring to shore from the middle of an ocean, not so much. One channel I follow is almost done with their circumnavigation, they crossed the Atlantic with (I think) on the order of 100l of Diesel. If you're using that little, you can probably easily replace the fossil part with synthetic e-fuel.

      I don't think this is "full solar" really -- not based on the amount of diesel she also can carry. The real question is whether she can run the full hotel load off the solar panels in decent sun without having to run a generator.
      Not even worried about propulsion... can you run the boat off solar at a mooring ball long term.

    • @2011blueman
      @2011blueman 10 місяців тому

      @@redwolfexr The answer is no looking at the specs. The "eco solar" is mostly a gimmick. I would be pretty surprised if the boat can run off solar at mooring without running the generators occasionally given all the bells and whistles on that boat drawing load. The reason they don't show the engine rooms is because people would see the diesel generators that are actually powering the proposition units.

    • @redwolfexr
      @redwolfexr 10 місяців тому

      @@2011blueman there is no question that the boat needs to run diesel to move. Its a big boat. It size/cost appeals to people who aren't going to want to travel slowly. (Silent is aimed at the other end of that spectrum - its a floating condo that can move slowly and still stay solar)
      I still wonder how close they are to being 100% solar at rest.

    The main screen at the inside helm station gave a pretty big glaring hint at what Sunreef is hiding in their engine room. Looks like they have a hydrogen range extender. I'm also wondering if it also has the ability to generate it's own hydrogen from sea water using the solar power.

      why not just use the electricity? it would be silly to add a step and use the electricity to make hydrogen.

    • @jackwickman2403
      @jackwickman2403 10 місяців тому

      @@scottmcshannon6821 Electricity from the solar panels is "use it or loose it". If you don't use it then you need to store it in the batteries. On board battery power can move this boat about 50 miles. Maybe less. Adding more batteries cost more money. Lots more money. Converting electricity to hydrogen can be cheaper than batteries for large quantity storage. The equipment to convert electricity, and sea water, to hydrogen, and oxygen for 25 or so kilowatts of available power is one up front cost. This boat has 30 some kilowatts of solar, but since they face different directions they won't all make peak output at the same time. The equipment to covert hydrogen to electricity for about 350 kilowatts to run the drive motors is a second cost. The size and cost of these 2 devices is determined by the available solar power and the size of the drive motors. Once we have these devices we can add long term storage of the hydrogen, a high pressure pump and tank, for very low cost. Doubling or tripling the size of the tank will add very little to the overall system cost as the converters stay the same. Storage capacity is limited by how much space we have in the boat and how high of pressure we're willing to use. The weight of the tank is moderate. If the tank is very large this system is much cheaper than an equivalent battery. If the tank is very small then the fixed cost of the converters makes this cost more than a battery. We could hang at anchor at a sunny, beautiful island for a month and slowly pump up our hydrogen storage while having a wonderful time swimming, fishing, diving and exploring. Then we would have enough range to move at a good speed, 5 to 10 knots, 120 to 240 miles per day, to our next stop. This wouldn't be possible with batteries. A range of more than 100 or 150 miles is the most even a large battery bank could deliver. As is this boat may do 50. The solar will then give us 25 to 50 miles per day after the batteries are drained. Progress will be slow. The alternative is to use a diesel generator to power the drive motors and buy diesel at a fuel dock when we're empty. This is quicker and cheaper. We can power or lights, freezers, stove, StarLink, etc. off the solar while at anchor, but we'll have to live with burning diesel when we move the boat more than a short distance. Today most people will take to cheaper diesel option, but somebody has to create the future, and this boat is doing that.

    Awesome yacht.. luv the dumbwaiter and all cooking equipment is kinda elevated.. they should've done an elevated dish washer 🥰.. Was wondering,... with all the solar panels, I assume it has unlimited range?.. if so.. that would be so awesome... 🥰😍

    Great Video, as always! Love the technology! BUT, the beginning of your video mentions Fort Lauderdale, FL and I'm pretty sure the only mountains in Fort Lauderdale are the landfills. Where were you?

    These solar panels are working fine to help to reduce running your generator/engine which not only cost gas but also produces noise.
    34 kWp is great even when the side panels will produce less and at an other time of the day then the roof panels. But yes, if you can, place them everywhere.
