I am so happy that someone was on a national stage echoing sentiments that I have long held. Very happy. I majored in Africana studies, and many a civil rights battle were won of respectability politics. In fact, they tried using Martyrs who were not as respectable, and lost. And then they tried using respectable Martyrs and won. Rosa Parks was one of those respectable Martyrs. Black lives matter needs to go back and study their own history.

If one looks back even further, to Booker T Washington, WEB DuBois, and even Frederick Douglass, all these men went out of their way to present an image that didn't conform to the stereotypes about black men, Stokely Carmichael and his ilk shouting "Burn this muthafucka down!!!" actually played right into the hands of White Supremacists who characterize black men as foaming at the mouth lunatics, incapable of rational thought and far more akin to animals than human beings
His shouting at the cops and accusing them of racism the minute they showed up got him a mugshot, That's what happens when you get attitudinal with cops, who frequently already have a stick up their asses to begin with

Especially when all one has to do is say "This is my home. I live here, and can show my ID", in as calm a voice as possible

respectability politics will not save you. They never have. MLK was as respectable as they come and he was still murdered.
