  • Sky News host Caroline Di Russo has paid tribute to Australian comedian Barry Humphries who passed away following complications from hip surgery.
“Humphries was an exceptional actor in his own right, but he will forever remain in the forefront of the Australian cultural psyche for his characters Sir Les Paterson and Dame Edna Everage,” she said.
Ms Di Russo said Dame Edna Everage had a “wonderful rapport” with the Royal Family, particularly the late Queen.
“It wasn't just the Queen; the Dame pulled this great prank on Charles and Camilla in 2013,” she said.
“So, to Barry, Sir Les and the great Dame, you have been an inexorable part of Australia for decades and have an unassailable place in our culture and in our hearts. Thank you.”

As an American, I discovered and fell in love with British humor back in 1999. Makes more sense and is far funnier than American humor. I will miss Dame Edna😢.

Do you know how much Barry was loved across the world? He was a genius, nobody could deliver an insult as elegantly as he could, and with such warmth, as Dame Edna. But he was spectacular as himself, too. I love all the interviews with him. God bless him!

He managedto do it tongue in cheek and disguise it in a way that didn't leave him open to heavy criticism.
I think in 10 to 20 years from now we'll appreciated Barry even more. There aren't many original entertainers left.

I remember in the 70s and 80s my father and I always watched Dame Edna's shows, My father was born in Essendon and grew up in Moonee Ponds so he had a connection to Dame Edna.
Sadly my father passed away in 1992 and no Barry is gone also.
I wish we still had some old fashioned comedians and entertainers as there's not enough laughter in the world anymore.

It’s rude to disrespect the dead. So if you have nothing nice to say don’t say it. Just because you are all woke behind the safety of your keyboards does not make you right and you would never be so rude as to talk to your own grandparents that way. He was 89 and from a different time and generation. Times change but he was still as entitled to his opinion as much as you. He was also very funny and achieved a lot.

Really? I had no idea that Dame Edna or Barry was so well known to Americans?
My father was born in Essendon and grew up in Moonee Ponds, the home of Dame Edna.
We mainly watched Dame Edna in the late 70s and 80s. I used to laugh whenever Dame Edna stood up to greet guests and would do a little light jog in those heels.
      And the Gladiola flowers..............

I can't help but think of all the coordination required for the jubilee introduction and the royal box prank. Both were definitely cheeky, and only worked because Barry Humphreys had a good relationship with the royals. Cheeky, but not insulting.

I really have loved Barry Humphries. He was a brilliant man to have that kind of satire and stiletto pin point accuracy in his observations. I dreaded this day and although Barry was Australian and lived in Great Britain, as an American I think he was a citizen of the world. I fondly say farewell to this gift who gave joy to so many.

    • @garynewton1263

What do you mean he lived in Great Britain?.he may have lived there briefly many many years ago but he was a Melburnian through and through and lived in Camberwell for a large chunk of his life.
      He loved it there.
Dame Edna was from Moonee Ponds, the other side of town. 😉
