There is one point worth mentioning that you may want to include if you do another video on bike theft and it doesn't cost a dime. That is to always try to park in a well lit area. Whenever I'm traveling I always try to park in the area in front of the door to the hotel where I'm staying. Of course this isn't always possible but most hotels are sympathetic to bike riders and will let you if it's safe to do so. If you use the tips provided in this video and park in a well lit busy area you bike is less likely to be stolen.

Here's a couple more thoughts. If you are trailering a bike and might be leaving it overnight in a motel parking lot, cable or chain the bike to the trailer or at least use a disc lock. Also make sure the trailer is locked to the tow vehicle. They make a sliding lock that goes through the hitch lever that prevents the hitch from being opened. Also, a locking gas cap will prevent any tampering.

I use the following eight layers of protection for piece of mind and a good night's sleep:
    1. Steering lock
    2. Front disc lock
    3. Rear disc lock
    4. Rear tyre clamp (meant for a car but fits perfectly on my bike)
    5. Clamp that locks the throttle and front brake into position, with an in-built alarm
    6. Chain the front tyre to a fixed object
    7. Bike cover
    8. Park a small car in front of it, both obscuring my bike and making it almost impossible for a would-be thief to get my bike past it, as it's surrounded by fixed objects
Also, my bedroom window is only several metres from where my bike is locked up.
I would say that it was, at first, a little inconvenient to put all these measures in place after a ride, but now I'm used to it, and it only takes a couple of minutes. There's nothing more inconvenient than having your pride and joy stolen, not that it has ever happened to me. Fingers crossed it ever will.

One extra tip when touring and parking and there’s no solid object to chain to, is to look for other bikes that are chained together. Then chain your bike to theirs by passing your chain through their chain, then all bikes are reasonably safe and the other guys can leave when they want. This is accepted all over Europe, also on BMW bikes don’t use the handlebar lock, as they have a fitted ‘antenna’ ring on the ignition barrel so when the key is inserted it talks to the ECU and allows the bike to start, and it can’t be ‘hot wired’, so why have the handlebar lock and ignition lock wrecked that cost me £2,000 and they still didn’t get the bike, as it was chained via the back wheel to a concrete post and an Abus disk lock on the front wheel. Lesson learned.👍😃

I installed the Harley Security Siren onto both of my touring bikes. It's loud if you try to move it without the key fob or entering the PIN. It's not perfect but, it will bring attention to someone trying to take the bike. I have an install video on my channel for those that are interested. Thanks Kevin. 👍👊🇺🇸

I always lock the forks when I walk away from the bike. When parking it overnight or parking it in an area that seems less secure, I also add the caliper lock to the front right side disc. I usually also put the bike on the center stand. I figure the act of taking it off the center stand with the wheel turned to full lock means they would very likely end up dropping the bike during the process and therefore won't be likely to attempt it. I don't know that center standing the bike makes much difference, but, like all security, it's a series of layers that makes the overall opportunity cost higher to the would be thief.

    • @johnnylightning1491
      @johnnylightning1491 3 роки тому

I can almost guarantee that they will drop the bike if the wheel is locked and on an center stand. I don't use my steering lock because I've dropped my bike in the garage when the forks were locked.

I've had two motorcycles stolen. This was back in 2004 (two in one year!), so GPS and things like that were very uncommon. I was living in a college town, and I never thought I'd be a victim. The bike were parked in a carport outside my apartment. As a new rider, and about 22 years old, I just left them there unsecured. I had good coverage and taking the insurance payout was much easier than waiting around. The second bike was recovered a year later when a drunk crashed it into a tree. By that time, I'd already purchased a new Honda Shawdow and secured it with a logger's chain.
I live in the city and do not have a garage. Where I live is very high crime. When I had my Triumph Bonneville America from 2008-2013, I parked it on the street outside the house. A kid vandalized it one, causing minor damage, but no thefts. I have a small bike now, which stays on my partially enclosed back porch with a cover, disc lock, and a surveillance camera. Plus, I have the best insurance policy one can get. I don't worry much.

Many of the sport bikes stolen end up as parts for racing bikes. When I flew my bike to Europe and couldn't get theft insurance I bought a hunking big ABUS chain and disk lock and a cover. I had read the Reddit posts before I left. But as you said, if they want your bike they will get it. Many of the videos from high theft areas show bikes being lifted onto cube vans. A couple of locks and good insurance are the best way to go! Also don't post Relive videos or geotagged photos that show where you live- you're just helping bike theft by order thieves.

I stayed away from buying a motorcycle because of how easy they are to steal in UK. Couple of years ago I bought a motorcycle and park it on the streets. I always have 2 disk locks away from home and at home I have 2 chains and 2 disk locks together with a cover. I always see evidence of tampering but it's never been stolen. It's a hustle to lock it up but the day I'm complacent. Someone's going 2 punish me

My first bike, that I bought at auction, was stolen after 18 days. The OPP called me a couple weeks later to say they had recovered it. Fortunately, the impound yard told me that they wouldn't add insult to injury and didn't charge me anything (thief used a sports bike like a dual sport). After that, I always used a cover, occasionally a bicycle Kryptonite lock, and in a parking garage I park over an oil spot so it looks like I ride an old piece of crap.

I felt horrible for them, Harley's are targeted big time around Biketoberfest and Bike Week.

Hi Mc. good video. couple points, when first got my fazer my insurance advisor told me that if my bike was stolen and if I had not put steering lock on they will not payout, so thats the first pont. second I used to use a disc lock on the front, one day forgot about it being there, consequently dropped her, the point is you need a reminder like a cord fittedto the handlebar. thirdly I now use a handlebar lock, this goes around the throttle and brake lever, its easy to fit and remove before Starting the bike. I have used a chain and lock, its covered in fabric so is fairly safe. cheers again.

On a trip I put a caliper lock on the front wheel, lock the handlebars and I put a cover over it with a perimeter alarm attached to the cover. If someone lifts the cover it will pull the pin and it screams with the same decibel of a police siren, it is loud and will draw attention. You can use a key chain alarm as well, on the cover. Make sure the alarm is just inside the cover where is is not visible for anyone to see. Just make sure you disarm it before you take the cover off in the morning. Good video, I never thought about putting the caliber on the back wheel, good advice a usual. Thanks

If you can believe this, my buddy bought a brand new Indian Super Chief this year and it does not have any kind of handlebar lock. So, he bought a little device that goes on the clutch handle or brake handle that locks it into position so that the bike is not drivable. Still, not having a handlebar lock was a frustrating realization for him after spending all that money on a brand new bike.

Harleys and other big bike are harder to move, so are less likely to be stolen. One guy I know drilled a hole through the interior wall of each of his saddleboxes, and slips a piece of rebar through the holes (and the spokes on the rear wheel). All that a potential thief could know is that the bike stops rolling after a couple of inches. A good alarm is a must, prefer one with a jiggle switch. The best follow-up to an alarm going off is an armed response.

Or you can get a siren for the built-in anti-theft system for your Harley-Davidson that screams if someone moves the bike and they don't have the key fob. Thieves are basically lazy and don't want to draw attention to themselves. I don't believe I have ever had a hotel tell me I couldn't park right in front of the hotel doors where the night auditor would hear or see someone stealing my bike. The other thing you can do is if you want to chain your bike down is to get one of those corkscrew looking things made to chain your dog in the yard and weld the loop shut. There's too many revolutions to get it out of the ground to do that if the chain or cable is tight. Can it be done, of course, but they will move on to an easier target. Keep the good stuff coming Kevin.

When I ride to work I do not park in the building car park as a thief could reasonably expect that the bike will be sitting there between 10AM and 3PM without anyone coming in our going out. Instead I rent a space in an apartment block across the road from work that has shops on ground level. It's also good that the bike can't be seen from the street so I expect that helps. The business owners and residents come and go all day so there is always someone around plus to get into the car park you need to use a special type of key to get in and out. Then I
    1) lock the forks
    2) put the bike in gear
    3) use the factory immobiliser
    4) disk lock on the front
    5) disk lock on the rear
    6) chain the bike through the rear wheel to a concrete pillar that supports the concrete floor above.

I have a hidden Apple Air Tag on mine - works like a charm. Tested it extensively and know when my bike is moved and where its at; accurate to within a couple of feet. $25 and you just need to replace the watch battery once every year or two (even warns you before it goes dead).

Talk about "old School"... but VERY un-expected by thieves... I do cover my bike when I Travel. Even though it is a "Sport Naked" I roll up my cover, and a very good-quality rain coat, and strap them on the passenger seat. (my 'passenger' generally rides her own bike when we travel.)
But inside of my rain cover, I sewed a small loop... in a place where I can attach a "Cow Bell"... and if someone even Looks under the cover, or moves the bike, the cow bell sounds off! And the more they look for the Cow Bell... it will be rattling the entire time.
But one of the main things to remember is TIME... the more TIME it will take a thief to get your bike moveable, the less likely they are to try to take it. And that will also mean some time for YOU to put those measures in place, and YOUR TIME to remove them and store them. But it is a small 'investment" to prevent a theft of YOUR bike. Make Some things Obvious... so they know it will take them time. And make some things 'hidden' so they will have to figure them out as they come to them. Make them use TIME to take your bike!
    { I have even "done things" to my Car, in much the same way, so even if they break into the car... it won't MOVE unless they drag it onto a flatbed... }

You've got a great channel, Kevin, and you are a terrific teacher. However, some of your earlier videos are difficult to share because of the solid minute of promotion before you get into content. I would like to suggest that those videos might be improved by revisiting them, and editing in a shortened "please subscribe" message, maybe put some of that at the end.
I tried showing my brother one of those, and he yawned and walked away bored before you had even started on the topic.
Now that I know you, I don't really mind, and I'll gladly wait out that minute, but a guy like bro, he has no idea if the promo is going to be just one minute or five, he's not there to get sold something, he's there because I told him you have something interesting to say. When he sees that I brought him to an ad for a UA-cam channel, he gets turned off and never gets the benefit of your (truly awesome) commentary.
I love you Kevin, and someday I'm going to watch your "about that eye" video. I'm kinda squeamish, which is why I haven't yet.
I'd like to participate in a call-in sometime. I'm very curious to hear your opinions about some riding techniques that that I've developed over my 50+ years of motorcycling.

Not sure if it is true, but have heard from several Europeans that have lived in US, the best way to avoid car thieves is to get the car with manual transmission = ).......... about the bikes, probably locks are good and will take time to get rid of them for thieves, but if you are not living under constant sun shine it might be pretty messy operation to put them, if the tires are full of dust or just wet and have some other crap on them it make lock not so attarctive. Maybe covering the bike will be quite effective as well, at least it will be less attractive. Some noisy alarm system might be good as well. And for Harleys, many bikes brought from US to European market are significantly cheaper compared with local dealers, I guess that is one of the indication that bike might have been stolen, so don't think that bad about your local dealer, he might be just most honest one , who pays the taxes and and not stealing the bikes like some "import second hand bike from US LTD" companies might do it

I read the same article and one of the things I took away from it was he said he needs a shopping list before he goes looking for bikes to steal and the places he goes to the most is apartments buildings and factories. I tried a GPS tracker and had no luck with it either also Kevin isn't a bike alarm a good deterrent my BMW has a factory alarm and it's motion sensored it's also goes off if you cut wires it . I try and layer my protection even though the locking systems I use are not expensive they're going to have to cut at least three of them before they take my bike. And I always cover my bike even when I'm go camping and I lock it down covering my bike means the morning it'll be dry safe and if I need to have some space I can put my gear underneath it too. And the best trick I know to stop your bike from being stolen park beside a more expensive one like a Yamaha, Honda or a Harley-Davidson and make it hard for them to take yours.

    My best:
    1. Having unpopular bike
Eyes is the problem, so double it with cover bike. As long as they don't see it worth, they won't steal.
    2. Disk brake lock
almost visible. I use allen key bolt, slip it in disk hole. Giving little shock when tires roll, then stop in sudden.
    3. Remove ignition fuse
Fuse is small easy to slip it in pocket or wallet. If leaving bike for long time. Unable to turn on engine if they think it's battery problem, using kick starter wont do either. They have to tow.
    4. Pray
For believers, ask protection from those evil people.

    • @joemann7971

The ignition fuse just seems like it would just cause you more headaches than the thief. Most thieves will just load it on a van or trailer and take off, or just walk away with it if they can. I don't think they'll waste time trying to start it even if you left the fuse in place.
