Located in Mayrhofen is Austria’s steepest pisted ski run, Harakiri. The ski run has an inclination of 78%.
The run was filmed with two Gopro hero 7 black cameras at 4k in January 2020.
The run is north facing so regularly in the shade, with usually pretty hard packed snow. If you fall at the top there is a strong likelihood that you will end up at the bottom.

Can tell it’s steep by the number of turns vs the relative speed. He’s putting in a lot of turns to control his acceleration. Must be a damn hard work out on the quads!
hes not fully finishing his turns which is also making him make more turns to controll speed. But this piste is steep dont get me wrong.
And still manage to peak at 55 mph.....with all that control!
Great run. The run is way steeper than it looks on the video.
It's the fish eye on the GoPro, i hate it too
should have some kind of indicator showing the steepiness.
The steepest part is not so huge perhaps impressive enough lol
@ColbyChamplin IMHO only second quarter of the slope is REALLY STEEP and i wouldn't even call bottom half of the slope as "black"
I was going to say, that doesn't look that steep. I always have this problem with ski videos on youtube, there ought to be a way to make that more obvious
Honestly from when I went last year this video doesn't do it justice on how steep it is.
Indeed, I'm skiing regularly a local run of 68% and on video it looks like a blue piste. I can't imagine what 78% feels like as even at 68% I'm as nervous as one can get :D
This is something like movie-makers records somebody climbing a wall but actually he "climbs" a floor. 😁
Yeah this doesn’t look bad at all.
It’s still a groomer... I went on runs like this age 8 in ski school
@@KCJbomberFTW Pfft that's nothing, I was doing runs like this before I could walk. Now I ski runs so steep that they bend the fabric of spacetime itself.
The only thing that actually gave me a sense of how steep this was, was the speedometer. Cool run
Hi Damon thanks for the comment!
If only it was in km/h...
How the heck are you making turns like that at 40-50 mph? So impressive bro, hats off
It's called good technique and sharp edges.
Two years ago, I skied down it 6 times in a row. The steepness is alright, it is just the ice that makes it difficult.
Thats often the case with the black runs, sadly.
Stfu I Stowe in east America at Stowe.fr all there is s ice so stfu if u wanna know how to ski come to Stowe ski some black ice
Yep, had the same experience, even in April with 13°C it was extremely icy...
@@wmh-gm9xj dawg just shutup😭😭
@@wmh-gm9xj ew no skiing on ice is no fun you can find me in the rockies 😂
The way he skies in the steepest section gives away the steepness and the icy conditions. If I skied like that down my local blacks I would barely move and he is going 20mph. Crazy!
I just came back from Mayrhofen, and seeing this run from the cable above is fucking insane. This footage doesn't show how freaking steep this run really is. Great job, man.
I would maybe try to crawl down on a 3 foot powder day
The fact you skied this (and well) on ice ... super impressive
I've made the run 2 years ago several times, it was in April and the temperature was above 10°C. Even in the afternoon the run was extremly icy, which is a pity because I really like the layout of the run...
It is hard for snow to stay on a very steep slope especially when people are skiing down it and dislodging the snow
@@amblincork Your're right, in addition to that, the sun basically never touches the slope, which doesn't help either.
I actually fell over watching this, what a run!
I think I’m a bit early for all the Americans claiming it’s not that steep, they could ski it backwards and they skied steeper on their first day of skiing somewhere in America on 1 ski.
Skied like a boss! I hope to ski it 1 day.
I hope everyone commenting that this should be easy and not so steep, are all pros....otherwise just sad to even comment. Nice run!
Thanks for the comment! There's definitely a lot of pro skiers in the comments!
Never done this slope I'm nowhere near good enough to do it. I always come up the chairlift at the side and it's so steep. Wouldn't want to fall over.
55 mph on Harakiri - you are really Damn Skilled! 👍🤘 I haven't run Harakiri yet, it's my dream, but I won't be so fast definitely.
You actually don't have much choice. Getting down is going to be fast either way, and doing smooth carving will feel a lot better than anything else.
Those skis really handle the speed maybe some GS DNA in there. I've seen you ski fast with them in other vids
Funny memories: I went down this slope twice in 2017. It was very icy, and sharp edges were a must :) Many people seemed to struggle there, and it was great fun to watch the spectacle on the way up. However, the third time I hit this slope, I was taking a short break on the very left just before the steepest section, and all of a sudden I was knocked down by a skier who fell right above me. We slid down to the bottom of the slope as one huge snowball :D No injuries, just skis and poles all over. Fun to watch for the people on the lift for sure ;) And yes, the slope is *way* steeper than it looks on the video.
Hahah thanks for sharing brought back memories. Yep the wide angle lense make the run look so much flatter!
Alright, American chime in here. :) first, I would love to ski this one day myself. I know wide angle makes it look flatter than it actually is. But it really doesn’t look that steep. 78% means 35 degree. In North America, 35 degree slope would qualify as a double black trails but this is a groomer which will bump it back to black, or red in Europe system. The harder double black in North America often has 40+ degree slope with moguls, cliffs or trees. It is hard for me to believe that this is the steepest for Austria. Maybe this is steepest excluding off piste?
Correct not 78 degrees. 35 dEgrees maybe
Family World Wanderer snow looks like shit
One of the steepest groomed slopes in austria, off-piste there's a ton of high alpine steep stuff in the alps to enjoy, but you need the skills to get there and ride stuff that is 45° or more.
Small Edit here, last week there opened a new steep af piste in austria with almost 88%
www.snow-forecast.com/whiteroom/new-steepest-piste-in-europe-opens-in-austria/
omg 78% means 35 degrees? i was thinking 78% meant 78 degrees. what is the use of using a percent anyways?
78% is 70,2 degrees...
holy shit that looks steep, even on camera!
This run is proper steep ! Trust me
for the people who are saysing this is not steep ive been there and its very steep. its always shadowed and icy. what do i care for moguls if i have no grip on the slope. For me icy is more difficult than moguls. the man in the video has a good technique.
I have done it twice as an intermediate and I think it is the combination of ice and snow accumulating at the sides on the narrow steepest section at the top that is the most challenging !!
When I heard the gradient I was like "Ok, I've done other runs around that steepness before, it doesn't sound awful", but I can tell from the audio and shade that this run is an ice sheet - no thanks ^^"
Wow, top speed 55 mph, snow conditions must have been good, each time I did this run it was ice sheet, could not get a grip just had to power slide half the piste and slow down where another run joins from the right to avoid skiers crossing my path...Harakiri is all about controlling the speed.
Looks so easy in the video... My father is a experienced ski driver but got an panic attac at this slope because there was a whiteout and ice
LOL ! Once you go down about 20 metres and at are the narrow steepest section, it is very intimidating !! And if it is moguly after a lot of skiers have gone down, it can feel nightmarish !!!
If the machines can make it you can make it. Steep begins when machines end.
They have a winch at the top to pull the piste basher up!
@@Alexskiing I know, does not matter.
After years of working and skiing at Tahoe resorts and skiing in the Dolomites and the Val D'Aosta Alps, I have to say, I just don't find European expert terrain nearly as difficult. I know people take yt comments super seriously, but if you've ever skied there, you know Kirkwood's Wall, chutes, and cliffs just hit different. Watching this video - and this is another thing I noticed in Italy - I think it's crazy that Europeans tend to favor piste skiing instead of heading off into the trees. There's no denying it's magical to ski in Europe, though. We were working on a trip to Hokkaido for this winter, but it looks like Japan has shut things down again. Our Epic passes work at Skirama Dolomiti. If anyone has any experience there and knows where the toughest terrain is, please share.
I had an extreme urge to go skiing this morning, so that’s why I watched this video
So I successfully went down the second steepest ski slope in Sweden the other day and felt really proud, and then I see this.
I am still kind of proud but damn, how is this even humanly possible and how are so many people brave enough to attempt this?
From the video it’s hard to tell how steep it really is. Furthermore it’s a lot of ice!! I did this slope head first sliding on my back and burned both my thumbs cause of the speed and ice while wearing my leather motor gloves! So the harakiri and I have unfinished business....
Ril de Gooijer good luck when you are there next. Looks like you do have unfinished business lol
Intentionally you did this on your back? Now that’s a video Id like to see!!!
Awesome. Don’t you just love steep on piste runs 👏
Yes I do!
I like steep off piste runs better.
I realized how steep it was when we start seeing the valley I guess it is or when it clearly start being flat down the slope anyway. Looks amazing
I was there 3 days ago 😂and wanted to hit it but mum said I’d slide down so she didnt let me😢 but I got the devils run easy 😊keep it up!😊
basically any black diamond run
Nothing about that sounds fun.... scraping down an icy groomer in a shadow...
38 degrees. Woopie ding dong.
Sweet run!
go to Austria almost every year and will always look for black pistes to do, ive never been here but this one will be on the list if I ever get there! Won't be this fast for sure but will come down safely :D
I snowboarded this about 18 years ago, fell over but controlled it and carried on. It really is very steep.
Forget the angle... that New England scratch says it all🤣
Not sure how steep it is actually comes across but it is steeeep!!!
I’m not ashamed to say I was daunted doing it !! Member of our group dislocated his shoulder and was helicoptered to hospital.
Not for the inexperienced especially when icy !!
lol on the bigger screen it looks like he is standing still and the smaller one u see how fast it goes
I fell down on harakiri around 8 times and only on 9-th pass it LOL
Send it!
It's equal to about 38 degrees. Steep, but not enough to be notorious.
Well you can certainly ski! Slick
Great skiing
I was on this steep, and seeing Harakiri scared the shit out of me
Lol I thought it was steep the people in the comments don't lol
78%. NOT 78degrees! 45% is 100 degrees so Marte in Argentina is 51DEGREES basically twice as steep as this
fun fact: by austrian law every child is required to ski this slope to graduate 5th grade
i ve been to Austria and the level of most people skiing there is terrible.
Amazing they can groom it
Dang looks like fun! Hope I get to ski the alps some time
That looks awesome
Thanks hope you get to try it one day!
Honestly this doesnt look that bad, you did very well, cranking the turns. I think people could easily bomb this.
Spoken like an intermediate who hasbnt been there !!
@@amblincork lol ok maybe only the top section
78% is not steep for an expert skier. 100% is equal to 45 degrees. There are many expert runs that tilt up to 55 degrees. When you have to do double pole jump turns you know it's Steep.
It is not even the steepest prepped normal piste in europe, that is 102%
The snow sounds HARD too!
Super icy lol
Love the lift line
That didn’t look too bad. More ice than snow to my liking.
It doesnt look too bad because he is an excellent skier !!!
About a 38 degree slope. Steep for sure but not too crazy. Still, if it's icy it could be tricky. Howelsen Hill, the local hill in Steamboat Springs, CO, is 37 degrees. The winter sports club kids ski race down it for training. A slope really gets steep when you can stick your arm out at a 90 degree angle and hit the snow with your hand.
Well made. But this run area is free left and right. That makes it more relaxed. When it goes down left side and the right side is deep wood and big stones you consider twice each move.
Black runs always sound like that
Wow that is steep. It's hard to get an appreciation for it in the video. Not too many moguls though.
I've tried this fabled harakiri and to be honest I was disappointed, I feel like the most "troublesome" feature was the fact that it was very poorly tended to, had it been more compressed, it would've been an absolute carving joyride, whereas in the conditions I have encountered, I had to go for a more mogul-like turning style (still very fun but just a bit underwhelming compared to what I've heard about THE harakiri)
Interesting perspective the top of the steep section I would struggle to carve properly.
In the video it seems steep but in reality I bet that’s waaay steeper 😱
Going up the lift u always see the beginners falling in the beginning and then sliding and trudeling to the end😂🥺
There is a warning
I dont know why this people go to spots which they cant ride.
I think the warning sign should be more aggressive
In switzerland they have signs that say that you only can ride it if you are a professional and that it is very steep
This thing here is more like just for practiced skiers
You are a good skier. I've seen other videos with people doing that run with their bottom on the ground.
For a moment I thought it said Australia and got really scared
Haha love this
Those turns were cleeeeean
In fact 38 degrees is not particularly steep. At least 45 degrees is required for defining skiing as extreme skiing. Kaunerthal now boasts the steepest run in Austria with 41 degrees.
Interesting thanks for the tip on the run to try out!
0:53 the hardest hart might be that this can be pure ice and you can slip easily
ive done this one in mayrhofen, its not too bad luckily cause the run is fairly short, gets really icey though later in the day
Isnt the streif in kitzbuhel above 80%?
Franz Klammer would be impressed.
Sorry mate i dont want to have an argument but the steppest slope in Austria is the Langurzug / 80%
Not going to argue with you I'm sure your right I just went on Mayrhofen tourist board website and that what it said. I have been to a few pubs in Austria that claim to be the oldest as well lol.
Snowboarded this, didn’t think it was too bad tbh…
Its steep for an intermediate skier and it gets icy in the afternoon, video makes it look easier than it is.
I was there on a good day last year and holy shit its so steep... take a deep breath and really force your edges into that slope, though only 5akes 5 turms to make it. Btw first time in my life i wasnt skiing this year :(
Cool, that's what I want to do.
Thanks
Nailed it
lemme guess, gopro effect in play?
How would you say the steepness compares to the tunnel in Alpe d'Huez? It's hard to tell from video but this run kind of looks a bit easier.
@Peter hunt I think the Harakiri is steeper, but its no way near as daunting. I spoke to a few people in the resort and Harakiri is pretty much always icy with no moguls. I think it's so steep at that first section and because it's north facing so always icy, I don't think fresh snow settles. The tunnel is a much harder run in my opinion.
@@Alexskiing Always think Devils Run is more challenging in Hof but I haven't fell down Harikiri yet 😉
It’s black ibex now.
I tried once by snowboard. What it makes difficult is the surface of the track: it was icy as hell. I could make it only on my ass down :D
Skied it like 3 weeks ago, pretty steep and icy but nothing to crazy, 3-4 carves and youre already down, hit like 110kp/h
How in the world is that run even have a name, i see super beginners on it. It can't be hard, your turns we're to basically check your speed from any possible surprises ahead instead of whats at hand, from what i could see, but your a good skiiersand your skis are quite fast
78% grade is less than 40 degrees which is not really that stees. Look at the stuff at chamonix, a lot of the terrain is in the high 40s in steepness which is over 100% grade
Bonjour à tous, la piste "Harakiri" est-t-elle la plus dangereuse à Mayerhofen ?
Merci cordialement, Johan.
Didn't bother to go through all the comments but I am sure at least 10 Americans already said that this is nothing compared to their local slope, lol
My toxic trait is thinking I could do this with out ever having skied in my life 😂
The langerzug is actually the steepest in Austria , it has 80% , however yes on average harakiri is steeper , nice run though !
What ski resort is this?
Mayerhopen
78% sure is steep for a resort piste and you need to be advanced+ for it, but it's only 38° which is somewhat common while backcountry skiing.
Most impressive feat is that they managed to groom it imo.
Still you bombed it, cool descent.
they have winches as the CAT cant get up there
@@howdo861 Yeah I know, anything above a steep blue is that way, I still find it impressive though.
And it is experienced off piste skiers who go back country on steep slopes. Whilst most peoplle who will attempt this are not so expeerienced
black runs are kinda hard for me but ive been to this one and its pretty easy especialy when the snow isnt frozen
Non si capisce cosa ci sarebbe di tanto straordinario. Prova a fare la Sylvester a Plan De Corones, poi ne riparliamo 😉
.... We have a ski run similar to this in Denmark; near our highest moutain [more than 170 meters high!]. Just like on this video its hard to do it justice on camera, but its Brutal and you sometimes reach in excess of 2kph - the years that there is snow on the hill. I wouldnt advise foreigners to try! Many get hurt at the hotel buffet'!
But isnt the Mausefalle at the Streif in Kitzbühel (Austria) 80% of drop? 🤔🤔🤔
I was there a couple of times. I'm not a very good skier so I didn't do the Harakiri, but I always enjoyed to see others struggling from the chairlift on the right. I also like this video about the Harakiri: ua-cam.com/video/wxLvp1MXcoA/v-deo.html
OMG that is amazing thanks so much for that!
I really hope the steepest run in Austria isn't only 38 degrees. Is it steep, yeah. But is it crazy steep compared to other places, absolutely not. I measured a few runs at Mt. Bohemia in Michigan at 40-45 degrees (84-100% grade) with a gradient measurement tool.
That window is a total distraction.
Isn’t 78% the average gradient? I.e. it’s steeper in certain places? Fabulously skied though, fair play.
@Chris West thanks for the comment. I am not sure to be honest I think its for that top section but not 100%
