How would you describe Yuji's philosophy? How would you rate his character arc?

    • @MegaJackolope
      @MegaJackolope 2 дні тому +2

Only thing I have to add is I feel like he transcended his grandpa's "curse" at the end. If you choose how to view the words "You're strong. Protect others. Don't die alone. Don't be like me.", that exact moment with Sukuna near the end could have turned out very differently. He chose mercy and was kind of spit on in return, but he attempted the gesture. The difference in potential philosophies would be that not showing mercy in this moment could have led to a personal regret down the line, it's a moment you can never undo. Sukuna cursing his fate and choosing to be defeated is... kind of a Sukuna move considering how he treats others when their time comes. He tends to treat true, absolute loss as an inevitablity for one side when they push themselves to the lengths they do when fighting.
I come from a moba background in most laning stages there's always a loser. There isn't any sense in beating up your teammate for losing lane, it was bound to happen to one of the laners. The notion that you have to be able to accept loss and roll with the emotions is something that usually separates people who grow, learn, and stick around and those who declare everything is impossible and just give up. It's a lot harder on your ego to lose for 30 min straight than most people realize. Yuji ate L after L after L for six months. Family member dead, scheduled execution, mentors, friends, tremendous loss of life, beatdowns, guilt over being responsible for the actions of Sukuna across the entire series. Yuji saddled up to claim responsibility even when he wished he was dead and had given up upon witnessing the Mahoraga-Nanami combo.
He climbed the fucking jacobs ladder, hurled Sukuna by his ankles down to earth and domain expansioned his ass with a talk no jutsu offering, said alright bet and ended the god damn series. He did so while eating huge shots that could have made anyone buckle over and decide they would give up, it was all too tough. He was determined to set things right and he helped Megumi through something that Megumi kind of helped Yuji through himself, right at the start. It doesn't play out the same way, but Yuji was going to need Megumi's help and probably perish if it wasn't for the results of his actions in the first part of the story at the school.
The ideals Yuji has at the start that place him into the story by helping in the fight and eating the finger are the same he has later but are very much changed by all the things that happened to him. I don't think the Yuji at the end of the story would have pulled the same move at the detention center to self-sacrifice anymore, but instead use the tools he built for himself to tear Sukuna out of him rather than essentially fold his poker hand and say me dying is the only way out of this. I think his definition or viewpoint of what a cog has significantly changed. In mechanics there is what is known as a "sacrificial part", like a plastic gear or coupling that shreds when a motor runs out of whack. I think he stopped letting himself be the sacrificial part in this machine, no matter how many times he had to hit the ground running and eat shit. The anger and (rightful) indignation he grows is the backbone he needed in life to deal with people like Sukuna who will use others for all of their worth and discard them.

Offering mercy and empathy towards an antagonist is pretty common for shonen MCs, but my favorite part of yujis character arc was that offering sukuna mercy and a chance to experience life as a human, and to experience what a bond between others truly feels like, is that in no way was it for the sake of a moral highground or to emphasize that killing him "isnt the right way" or to empathize that many villains were first victims like so many others come across to me.
For yuji it isn't abt proving anything, or being above anyone else.
Offering to spare sukunas life after all that hes done and despite the danger his existence poses is what heals him, overrides sukunas worldview and shows the true nature of yuji all at the same time.
To believe that sukunas life has value innately for existing, and therefore deserves for empathy and humanity to be shown to him is the last piece of the puzzle to show that HE deserves those things too.
After all hes been through and the self hatred and disregard hes felt, his new philosophy allows him to see beyond the consequences of actions out of his control and let go of the weight of the sins he commited, or couldn't prevent.
It also proved that sukunas belief that ones value stems from their strength, and to be strong you must forsake your humanity and exist a calamity isn't the only path, and by it being essentially his son(from ces perspective jin and Sukuna are the same so in a sense soul wise sukuna is yujis dad) Show that collective strength and human connection along with maintained ideals can best him topples his place in the hierarchy.
It also shows that at his core, yuji values humanity so much that even sukuna is offered a chance to experience it, bc they are the same. Both born bearing curses while completely unaware of it, sukuna became a monster bc of chance, but yuji had his grandpa, he wanted to be to sukuna what his grandpa was to him.
Its poetic, the last words of his grandpa led him to the point he even tried to save the one who hurt him the most.
Fuck i love yuji as a character, idc what anyone says hes one of the best written mcs in shonen

Yuji saying Sukuna that he can still accept him seeing value in not Sukuna's personality or the things he does but in life as a whole beyond his intentions is one of the most beautiful thing in Shonen at the end Yuji ended up finding his own way conclusion about Finding meaning and value in life itself and living behind the cog mentality Even valueing someone like Sukuna's life

This was a great analysis of Yuji and of course timing it before the last chapter was a great call. I guess to add to this were arcs that tested Yuji's mindset at each turn. First with Junpei being someone Yuji couldn't save and his reluctance to harm morphed humans. Then after Shibuya where Yuji was quite lost, Megumi came to him for help. Once that was seemingly done Yuji was ready to let Hana/Angel finish him off. Only for that lack of self worth to be challenged again by Sukuna using enchain and realizing the binding vow to not harm anyone didn't include Yuji. Now I will say how we got from here to a Yuji with self worth kinda fell into the timeskip. But I do like how when Yuji first finger was lost it was a sign he felt disposable. Meanwhile his second finger loss was when he was crucial to the plan. I feel like the overall idea of being a cog in system is somewhat retained throughout the story. But the value of that cog outside their purpose is what's changed. Valuing one's life is indeed a core message of the series and that can be seen with Megumi too, but that's a whole other topic.

Man, it's kinda sad how I have zero emotional attachment to JJK. Those 271 chapters failed to create a connection with me and by the time I caught up with the weekly release, I was reading the series just due to sunk-cost fallacy and memes.
So even a well-made video with good arguments like this is not doing anything for me. After this week, I will propably never intentionally think about Yuji ever again.

The idea of Yuji learning complexity of curses and humanity could’ve been great for Yuji but Jjk honestly didn’t do enough for Yuji to make us truly be able to understand that he learned that lesson and he didn’t have to many fights or confrontations to really show that grey area most of the curses Yuji fought had only been evil Choso just randomly realized they were brothers Sukuna never showed us why he’s evil he was just evil but I dunno I looking back there not much that truly allowed us to ponder the reasons why these characters did what they did

i feel that the vitriol over JJKs ending has been a bit overblown, and while the ending isnt everything i want, if you look at yuji and his arc as the center point of the story then i think it got where it wanted to go. i think that what the artist is trying to say is part of what makes a piece of art interesting, and in that vein id say Gege stuck the landing with the philosophy of the story. sure there are loose ends and underutilized characters, but i dont think the heart of the story went anywhere and i think thats worth quite a bit. Yuji finally found a way to live amidst the maelstrom of curses, he found himself, and theres a distinct beauty in that and looking back on the journey he had to go through to find his actualization.

I mean I have some issues with the pacing and how exactly everything tied together in retrospect but given it's actually pretty solid on a technical level, to say the ending was trash just sounds like you didn't like it and can't seperate your personal taste from your analysis.
And idek what you mean by saying the series is mid. every time I've seen something being called that the meaning changes a bit, so what do you even mean? That it was avg? That it was mediocre? Bad? What?
