  • I spent over a year planning and preparing for this trip. This video shares 40 tips that I used while sketching in Italy that you might want to consider incorporating in a future trip for yourself. This will be the first video of several regarding this trip and I hope you join me as I paint entries to finish my Italian sketchbook.
    You don't have to go to Italy to get ideas on how to make sketching/journaling an enjoyable experience. You can do this in your hometown! I used mostly watercolor and gouache on this trip and traveled with carry-on only.
    My art supplies weighed less than five pounds and I even took a stool and umbrella. I will list the materials in a future video, but this one is to show you how I captured memories in my journal and the planning that went into it.
    If you haven't watched the intro from last week, I will add that here:
    • Think of your Sketchbo...
    Please subscribe if you haven't and follow along with me in the next few weeks as I give more details about my methods.
    This was an artist retreat trip with Michelle Held. We stayed in a refurbished farmhouse outside of Cortona, Italy in the Tuscany area. I was a novice traveler compared to most on this trip. But it was incredible beyond words, and I will be forever grateful for Michelle Held and her vision, planning, and generous spirit for sharing this opportunity with other artists and myself.♥️

    This is one of the MOST helpful videos of travel journaling that I have ever seen! I would love to see your "likes" and "didn't like" lists! I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary in the Lake District and it was so lovely. I, too, kept track of things I wish I had packed and what I didn't use. Even though it was in the 40s at night, I needed a portable fan to just keep the air moving and the Lord provided it!! A dear American family we ran into gifted me on of theirs! Also, I brought a silicone scrubby that fits on my hands since Europe doesn't use washcloths! I wish I had a good, packable rain jacket. My puffer was semi-water resistant but it was also a little too warm at time. I packed too many art supplies. I wish I would have made a list of my days like you did, because I really can't remember one day from another. My waterproof, lightweight hiking boots from Danner were a win as well as my wool pants! A little packable shopping bag was really handy. My new baggallini sling was great. Wool shirts were perfect. I still am not happy with my set up for walking and hiking with art supplies and purse items. I would love to see your sitting stool! Thanks so much for sharing this video! I will be coming back to it!

      Thank you so much for your informative comment. We went to the Lake District on our 10th Anniversary!
      I'll do a video on my lists. I'm so thankful you found this video helpful. My focus when traveling is collecting memories instead of creating a masterpiece. It takes the pressure off. Feel free to ask questions...that's how I get ideas.
      Happy creating! Thanks so much for the compliment. ❤❤❤

    Love it! So many beautiful images that you captured! My favourite is probably the red flowers (geraniums?) around a window.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I just rewatched the video and realized I missed a page that also has red geraniums. I'll post that one later, but glad this one spoke to you. There was SO MUCH to look at, it was a challenge to zone in on a similar subject. Have a super day! ♥️

    Did you paint your watercolors with a water brush on the trip?

    • @KariWaltz
      @KariWaltz  17 днів тому

      Sure did! I used traditional brushes for the gouache.
